Q & A With Jean-Simon Deslauriers:
Q1: Tell us about your Minor Hockey career.
A1: I played two years in Novice ‘A’ with the Athletiques, two years in Atom ‘BB’ with the Titans and Estacades, two years in Peewee ‘AA’ with the Cataractes and Estacades, one year in Bantam ‘AA’ with the Estacades, one year in Midget Espoir with the Estacades and one year in Midget ‘AAA’ with the Estacades . During my second year in Novice, my team won the league championship.
Q2: Where did you play Midget hockey?
A2: I played my Midget hockey in my hometown of Trois-Rivières, Quebec. I played for the Midget Espoir Estacades when I was 14 years old and played for the Midget ‘AAA’ Estacades when I was 15 years old.
Q3: Were you always a defensemen? Why did you become a defensemen?
A3: No, I started as a forward when I was younger and then I switched a few times between defense and forward. I Finally decided to keep playing defense when I started my first year in Peewee ‘AA’. The reason why I stayed as a defensemen was because I liked it more.
Q4: You were born in Trois-Rivières, Quebec. Tell us a little about your hometown.
A4: My hometown of Trois-Rivières, Quebec is located between Quebec City, Quebec and Montreal, Quebec.
Q5: You were drafted by the Screaming Eagles at the 2011 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League entry draft in round one #12 overall. What was going through your head when Cape Breton was up to make their selection? Were you happy Cape Breton selected you? Did you know anything about Cape Breton before you were selected?
A5: I was very surprised to be selected that early in the entry draft. It was an incredible surprise and it definitely made me happy. Of course, you never know when you are going to be picked or by what team but when Screaming Eagles selected me, I was very happy as I heard that the Screaming Eagles were a great organization.
Q6: Over the summer, how did you get ready for your first Quebec Major Junior Hockey League training camp?
A6: Like every player attending a training camp, I worked hard all summer long while working out at the Estacades gymnasium in my hometown.
Q7: Tell us some interesting facts about your family.
A7: My father Ghislain is an engine operator while my mother Josee is an informatics teacher. I have an older sister who is 19 years old, she is currently studying at Laval University.
Q8: Who is the one person you would like to thank for getting you where you are today with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles? Why?
A8: The one person I would like to thank is definitely my dad. During my childhood, he has always been there to drive me to the rink and has always taken time to watch me play, he has also always been there to support me, in addition to this, he is the one who gives me advice on how to be a better hockey player and also a better person.
Q9: Who is your favorite NHL defensemen? Why?
A9: Kristopher Letang. He is an offensive defensemen and he makes smart plays on the ice.
Q10: What’s one thing you like about Cape Breton?
A10: All the people in Cape Breton are very nice and welcoming. It’s a great place to play hockey and the people are very supportive.
