Eagles Edged By Mooseheads In Shootout

Sydney – Andrew Shewfelt’s goal in the fifth round of the shootout proved to be the game winner as the Halifax Mooseheads edged the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 3-2 at the Country Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Shewfelt also scored for Halifax in regulation time, while Danny Moynihan also chipped in with a goal for the Mooseheads, who improve to 2-0-0-0 in the preseason.
Gareth Nicholson and Julien Pelletier each netted goals for the Screaming Eagles, who fall to 0-1-0-1 in the preseason.
Cape Breton opened the scoring on the power play as Gareth Nicholson fired home his first goal of the preseason beating Mooseheads goaltender Jean-Philippe Brais on the glove side at 16:07 of the first period, Cameron Dracy had the lone assist on the goal.
The hometown Screaming Eagles would take a 2-0 lead as Julien Pelletier netted his first goal of the preseason on a beautiful move at 3:19 of the second period, the goal was unassisted.
The Mooseheads pulled to within one at 4:12 of the second frame as Danny Moynihan scored into a wide open net for his first goal of the preseason, MacKenzie Weegar added the lone helper.
Halifax would tie the game at two as Andrew Shewfelt buried his first goal of the preseason at 12:02 of the second period, Danny Moynihan was awarded the only assist on the goal.
After Mooseheads goaltender Kevin Darveau shut the door on Kyle Farrell, Nicholas Dozzi, Bronson Beaton and Julien Pelletier in the shootout, Andrew Shewfelt would score beating Francis Léonard-Mayer on a deke. Darveau then stopped Charles-Eric Légaré to secure the victory for the Mooseheads.
Jean-Philippe Brais made 11 saves, before being replaced by Kevin Darveau, who stopped all 16 shots he faced in his 30:01 of relief, while Chase Marchand turned aside 7 of 8 shots, before being replaced by Francis Léonard-Mayer, who stopped 8 of 9 shots in his 30:01 of relief.
The Screaming Eagles will return to preseason action next Saturday, August 24th, when they host the newly rebranded Charlottetown Islanders at 7:00p.m. at the Emera Centre in North Sydney.
