Ruccia makes history in Eagles 6-0 victory over Sea Dogs
NOTES FROM THE GAME
– The game between the Cape Breton Eagles & Saint John Sea Dogs was called with 19:06 mark due to a medical incident on the Saint John Sea Dogs bench.
– Cam Squires paced the Eagles offense with two goals and two assists, with Olivier Houde, Jacob Newcombe, Cam MacDonald, and Luke Patterson also scoring for the Eagles. Newcombe & Tomas Cibulka each added two assists.
– Nicolas Ruccia stopped all 11 shots in the win, while Patrick Leaver stopped 22 of 28 shots.
– In the win, Ruccia has tied Martin Houle’s franchise record for most shutouts in a single season with six.
– Prior to the game, the Eagles honoured 20 year old players Cam MacDonald, Brayden Schmitt, Conor Shortall in a ceremony in which they were joined by family & billet families, featuring video tributes to each player.
The Eagles established a 2-0 lead before the halfway mark of the opening period, with Houde shot from the right faceoff circle, and Squires digging out a rebound from Leaver’s pads.
Newcombe added to the lead early in the second period, while MacDonald’s tally coming before the second period. Patterson’s goal was upheld after a video review, and with four minutes to play in the second stanza Squires found the back of the net for his second of the night.
The Eagles will now hit the road for their final five games of the 2023-24 QMJHL regular season. The next game is Thursday night in Moncton against the Wildcats. Puck drop is 7 PM.
