Eagles Rout Sea Dogs To Sweep Two Game Set
The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles swept a two game set with the Saint John Sea Dogs with authority after a 7-2 victory on Friday night at Centre 200. The Eagles defeated Saint John 10-3 the night prior.
While the Eagles heavily outshot Saint John in all three periods, the early stages of the game didn’t give indication of a blowout. Adam McCormick did open the scoring for the Eagles, ripping a shot over Tommy DaSilva. The teams then traded goals before period’s end: Josh Lawrence capitalized a rebound from a William Villeneuve shot to give the Sea Dogs a power play goal. Then the Eagles would leave the period with the lead, after Gabriel Proulx collected the puck after his own shot behind the net and sent a pass in front to Ryan Francis who buried the puck by DaSilva.
Period two would see both teams score once. Nathan Larose scored his second goal in as many nights, jumping into the play to put a shot by the Saint John netminder and push the lead to 3-1. However Nicholas Deakin-Poot took a pass from the sideboards to slide a puck under William Grimard and cut the lead back to a one goal deficit.
Cape Breton would earn goal early in the third period to firmly establish control of the game. Olivier Bourret scooped a rebound in front of the net and made it a 4-2 game. The goal underwent a lengthy review to judge whether it was offside, but the goal was upheld and the Eagles didn’t look back.
Brooklyn Kalmikov did his best to ensure the game was in hand for the Screaming Eagles, scoring the game’s next two goals. The first goal came after he converted a pass from Mathias Laferrière, and the second goal was a power play marker to make it a 6-2 score. The Eagles would finish the night’s scoring with another power play goal, a one timer finish courtesy of Shaun Miller.
Grimard picked up the victory, stopping 14 of 16 shots. DaSilva took the loss, stopping 47 of 54 shots.
The Eagles finish their weekend off on home ice on Sunday at 4 PM with a game against the Moncton Wildcats. Tickets can be purchased at the Centre 200 box office, by phone at 902-564-2200 or online at https://tickets.capebreton.ca/Online/default.asp
