Eagles Edge TItan In Tight Checking Matchup
NOTES
– Cam MacDonald’s goal with under three minutes remaining broke a 1-1 tie and helped give the Cape Breton Eagles a 3-1 over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Antoine Roy opened the scoring for the Eagles while Lucas Romeo sealed the win with an empty netter.
– Olivier Houde & Brayden Schmitt each picked up two assists for the Eagles in the win.
– Jakob Milota stopped 21 of 22 shots in the win, while Antoine Keller stopped 21 of 23 in the loss in addition to the empty netter.
– There was a 20 minute+ delay in the second period to fix a broken pane of glass at the 4:15 minute mark of the second period. The teams were sent back to the dressing room as the issue was fixed.
Chances were tough to come by in the opening period- the shots were just 3-2 in favour of the Eagles at the fifteen minute mark. The Eagles had an opportunity in the final minutes to break the game open on the power play, but it was short handed that the breakthrough came for the visitors.
Houde had a short handed break for the Eagles- while Keller was able to make the save, he couldn’t stop Antoine Roy coming and the Bathurst native scored in his home town to give the Eagles a 1-0 edge.
The Eagles killed the rest of the penalty, but Bathurst outshot the Eagles in the middle stanza off of a heavy shot from the right faceoff circle from Igor Mburanumwe. The game remained tied until late in the third period.
Cape Breton took the lead on an innocent looking play. Keller played the puck along the boards, but MacDonald was positioned deep on the left wing. With Keller still in the trapezoid, MacDonald wired into the open cage to give the Eagles a 2-1 edge.
With 1:24 left, Keller was lifted for an extra attacker as Bathurst had an offensive zone faceoff. But the Titan couldn’t create any offense, and seven seconds later Romeo found the empty net.
