The 2026 WHL Eastern Conference Championship presented by Nutrien will feature the top two teams in the Eastern Conference, as the No. 1 seed Prince Albert Raiders face off against the No. 2 seed Medicine Hat Tigers.<\/p>\n

Prince Albert will host Games 1 and 2 on Friday, April 24, and Saturday, April 25, respectively, before the series shifts to Medicine Hat for Game 3 on Tuesday, April 28.<\/p>\n

The Raiders and Tigers both punched their ticket to the Eastern Conference Championship by sweeping their respective second-round series.<\/p>\n

Prince Albert made quick work of the Saskatoon Blades, completing a four-game sweep Wednesday, April 15.<\/p>\n

Medicine Hat took care of the Calgary Hitmen, wrapping up a four-game run Wednesday, April 15.<\/p>\n

The two beasts from the east split their four-game regular season series down the middle, which each Club winning two games. The Tigers claimed the first two games of the season set, claiming 3-2 and 7-1 victories on November 29 and December 3, respectively. The Raiders secured the final two contests, beating Medicine Hat by scores of 8-5 and 5-1 on January 17 and January 24, respectively.<\/p>\n

Jonas Woo, who was ranked 179th among North American skaters in NHL Central Scouting\u2019s final rankings for the 2026 NHL Draft, the Tigers in scoring against the Raiders this regular season, tallying six points (3G-3A) in four games. Fellow 2026 NHL Draft eligible Markus Ruck, who is ranked 23rd among North American skaters, also registered six points (1G-5A) in four games.<\/p>\n

San Jose Sharks prospect Max Heise recorded seven points (4G-3A) in four games for the Raiders, while Dallas Stars prospect Brandon Gorzynski played a season high seven games against the Medicine Hat \u2013 two as a member of the Raiders and five as a member of the Calgary Hitmen. Gorzynski collected six points (3G-3A) over his seven outings.<\/p>\n

Between the pipes, 2026 NHL Draft eligible netminder Michal Orsulak went 2-2-0-0 with a 3.94 goals-against average and .876 save percentage for the Raiders, while Jordan Switzer went 2-2-0-0 with a 3.52 GAA and .870 SV% for the Tigers.<\/p>\n

The two teams last met during the second round of the 2025 WHL Playoffs, with Medicine Hat sweeping Prince Albert in four games en route to winning the 2025 WHL Championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

WHL TOTALS 80 PLAYERS; CHL BOASTS 76 PER CENT OF NORTH AMERICAN PLAYERS RANKED BY NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Calgary, Alta. \u2013<\/strong> The Western Hockey League heads into the 2026 NHL Draft as the No. 1 development league in North America, with four of the top five skaters and 80 total players ranked by NHL Central Scouting.<\/p>\n

NHL Central Scouting unveiled its Final Rankings for the 2026 NHL Draft on Thursday morning. The 2026 NHL Draft is scheduled to be held June 26-27 in Buffalo, N.Y.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile a lot has changed in hockey\u2019s development landscape, the WHL has further solidified itself as the best environment for players to be developed, scouted, and then drafted to the NHL,\u201d commented WHL Commissioner Dan Near. \u201cWith four of the top five skaters having developed in the WHL, and nearly a 20-per-cent increase in the players ranked by NHL Central Scouting, the WHL is once again reinforced as an exceptional path to professional hockey.\u201d<\/p>\n

Across the member Leagues of the Canadian Hockey League, including the WHL, Ontario Hockey League, and Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, a total of 197 players are ranked among the 261 players identified by NHL Central Scouting. This reinforces the CHL Member Leagues as the top development path for junior hockey players, with 75.5 per cent of North American-ranked players coming from the WHL, OHL, and QMJHL.<\/p>\n

Four of the top five ranked North American skaters developed in the WHL, including Medicine Hat Tigers alumnus Gavin McKenna (first) and Prince George Cougars defenceman Carson Carels (third), Victoria Royals alumnus Keaton Verhoeff (fourth), and Prince Albert Raiders defenceman Daxon Rudolph (fifth).<\/p>\n

NHL Central Scouting\u2019s top 32 North American skaters features 12 players developed in the WHL, including JP Hurlbert of the Kamloops Blazers, Ryan Lin of the Vancouver Giants, Liam Ruck of the Medicine Hat Tigers, Ben MacBeath of the Calgary Hitmen, Markus Ruck of the Medicine Hat Tigers, Chase Harrington of the Spokane Chiefs, Jakub Vanecek of the Tri-City Americans, and Mathis Preston of the Vancouver Giants.<\/p>\n

Five WHL netminders rank among the top 10 goaltenders in North America, including Michal Orsulak of the Prince Albert Raiders, Filip Ruzicka of the Brandon Wheat Kings, Marek Sklenicka of the Seattle Thunderbirds, Tobias Tvrznik of the Wenatchee Wild, and Harrison Boettiger of the Kelowna Rockets.<\/p>\n

Of the 80 players developed in the WHL to be identified by NHL Central Scouting, 47 are forwards, 24 are defencemen, and nine are goaltenders.<\/p>\n

In total, NHL Central Scouting has identified 224 skaters and 37 goaltenders from North America, with 75.5 per cent of the list having spent time developing in the member Leagues of the CHL. The WHL accounts for 30.7 per cent of the North American list, while the OHL follows at 29.1 per cent and the QMJHL contributes 15.7 per cent.<\/p>\n

In 2025, the WHL accounted for 67 players on NHL Central Scouting\u2019s Final Rankings. The rise from 67 players in 2025 to 80 players in 2026 represents an increase of 19.4 per cent.<\/p>\n

Of the WHL\u2019s 23 Clubs, 22 are represented in NHL Central Scouting\u2019s Midterm Rankings, led by the Medicine Hat Tigers, who boast nine players. The Prince Albert Raiders follow closely with seven players ranked by NHL Central Scouting. The Edmonton Oil Kings and Portland Winterhawks both boast six players, while the Calgary Hitmen, Prince George Cougars, and Vancouver Giants all have five players ranked by NHL Central Scouting.<\/p>\n

NHL Central Scouting\u2019s Midterm Rankings features 197 players developed in the member Leagues of the Canadian Hockey League (CHL), including 76 from the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), and 41 from the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).<\/p>\n

Currently in its 51st year of operation, NHL Central Scouting provides evaluation and scouting of draft-eligible players to NHL member clubs. Headed by Group Vice President Dan Marr, NHL Central Scouting employs eight full-time scouts throughout North America.<\/p>\n

The 20-year-old from Hamina, Finland has four points (1G-3A) and a +5 rating in nine playoff matches in 2025-26. Vaisanen is chasing a second consecutive Ed Chynoweth Cup after hoisting it with the Tigers last spring.<\/p>\n

It looked like Everett would cruise to a sweep of Kelowna, but the Rockets had other plans.\u00a0 Seattle Kraken prospect Julius Miettinen, Matias Vanhanen (NHL CSS: 54) and Brek Liske (NHL CSS: 44) helped the visitors jump out to an early 3-0 lead. Enter Josh Banini. The 20-year-old entered the game late in the first period and denied all 29 shots he faced as the Rockets clawed their way back into the game in dramatic fashion. On a third-period power play, Utah Mammoth prospect Tij Iginla got Kelowna on the board with a laser from the point, marking his first goal of the series. Less than five minutes later, Nashville Predators pick Hiroki Gojsic stole a puck in the Silvertips’ zone and whipped a quick wrister past Anders Miller to bring the home side within one. Finally, with eight seconds left in regulation, Shane Smith shovelled a loose puck in off a scramble in front of the Everett net to force overtime. Colmer\u00a0was selected in the\u00a0first\u00a0round (17th overall) of the 2025\u00a0US\u00a0Draft.<\/p>\n

“Parker is an extremely talented hockey player. He is a duel offensive threat with elite-level playmaking skills to go along with a dangerous shot and finishing ability,\u201d Spokane Chiefs Director of Player Personnel George Ross continued, \u201cHe has high-end work\u00a0ethic\u00a0and leadership ability. We are thrilled that Parker and his family have\u00a0trusted in\u00a0the Chiefs to partner in his\u00a0development and\u00a0look forward to officially welcoming them to Spokane at Training Camp in the fall.”<\/p>\n

Colmer, from\u00a0Olathe, Kansas, played 58 games for Shattuck St. Mary\u2019s 15U AAA team this season where he put up 117 points with 42 goals and 75 assists\u00a0good for seventh in the nation in scoring for his age group.\u00a0He was first on the team in Games Played, Assists, and Points.\u00a0He added another 12 points (7G, 5A) in six games in the US 15U Nationals\u00a0where he won the Championship and was\u00a0tied for second\u00a0in scoring.<\/p>\n

“I am extremely excited to\u00a0sign\u00a0with the Spokane Chiefs and play in the WHL,\u201d Colmer said, \u201cI would like to thank my family, friends,\u00a0coaches,\u00a0and teammates for\u00a0the\u00a0support over the years. Go Chiefs!”<\/p>\n

Colmer\u00a0joins fellow\u00a0signees\u00a0Ryker Doka\u00a0and Sean Murphy\u00a0as signed 2010-born Chiefs prospects and is first eligible to join the team as a full-time player during the 2026-27 season.<\/p>\n
