New Jersey Devils return Ty Smith to Spokane Chiefs
Ty Smith is headed back to the Spokane Chiefs.
The defending Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman Trophy winner as the Western Hockey League’s Scholastic Player of the Year was returned to the WHL club Friday afternoon after an announcement came from the New Jersey Devils.
Smith was the top WHL player selected at the 2018 NHL Draft, picked 17th overall to the Devils last June. The first overall selection from the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft finished second in defensive scoring last season with 73 points (14G-59A), including three power-play goals and four game-winning goals in 69 regular season games.
The rear guard also made his WHL Playoffs debut last March, recording seven points (2G-5A) in seven games as the Chiefs were eliminated in Round One of the 2018 WHL Playoffs.
A 5-foot-11, 177-pound product of Lloydminster, Alta., Smith has now appeared in 137 career WHL regular season games, recording 107 points (19G-88A), including five power-play goals, and six game-winning goals.
Beyond impressing at the Devils’ training camp and pre-season, Smith earned attention at the 2018 World Junior Summer Showcase as he competed with Team Canada in the precursor to this winter’s IIHF World Junior Championship.
