In the lead-up to the 2026-27 hockey season, we’re diving into the WHL prospect pool for every NHL team. To be included in this list, a player must be recently drafted, signed to an NHL contract, or meet the NHL’s criteria for rookie status.

After a long seven seasons without playoff hockey in San Jose, the Sharks have laid the groundwork to become a Western Conference force in the coming years.

Luca Cagnoni

Twenty-one-year-old Luca Cagnoni's second professional season saw the 5-foot-9, 181-pound defender take a slight step back in production, but find the tools he needs to make the NHL. Cagnoni put up 43 points (8G-35A) in 67 games, ranking fifth on the San Jose Barracuda in scoring and 10th among all AHL defencemen. Notably, 23 of those points (3G-20A) came on the man advantage. He earned three games in the NHL and looks to carve out a position for himself on special teams for the Sharks. The Burnaby, B.C. product played more than 200 games with the Portland Winterhawks, racking up 193 points (44G-149A). Cagnoni's final season of major junior puck saw him become the first defenceman in the WHL to hit 90 points since 1993-94 (18G-72A). He picked up WHL U.S. Division First-Team All-Star honours in 2023-24 and added 13 postseason points to help the Hawks reach the 2024 WHL Championship Series. Cagnoni was selected with the 123rd overall pick in the fourth round of the 2023 NHL Draft.

Jake Gustafson

Six-foot-four centreman Jake Gustafson's rookie WHL campaign saw the 18-year-old post 25 points (13G-12A) in 68 regular-season tilts in Portland, highlighted by a hat trick against the Kamloops Blazers back in November of 2025. He led all Hawks rookies in goals while finishing fourth on the team in penalty minutes (68). The San Jose, Calif. product represented Team West at the 2026 WHL Prospects Game, where he earned an assist, and suited up for four playoff tilts. Gustafson had his name called by his hometown NHL club with the 174th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2026 NHL Draft.

Max Heise

Another centreman boasting plenty of size, 6-foot-3, 172-pound Max Heise's first Dub campaign was one to remember. The 20-year-old was named an alternate captain for the Prince Albert Raiders and went on to lead the team with 29 tucks in 63 games, in addition to 34 assists and a +28 rating. Despite being injured early in Game 1 of the 2026 WHL Playoffs, Heise returned to pot six points (4G-2A) in 16 games to help the Raiders reach the Final. The Calgarian also went 53.6% at the faceoff dot, ranking second on the squad with 431 faceoff wins. The Sharks' 2025 fifth-round pick (150th overall) has one more season of junior eligibility remaining.

Ryan Lin

2026 21st overall pick Ryan Lin hopes to join a new class of smaller defencemen making waves in the NHL. Despite having his season shortened by injury, the 5-foot-11, 176-pound blueliner led the Vancouver Giants with 57 points (14G-43A) in 53 games in 2025-26. He nearly tripled his goal output from his monster 53-point rookie season and was named an alternate captain for Team CHL at the 2025 CHL USA Prospects Challenge. Lin was named to the 2025-26 WHL Western Conference Second All-Star Team and went on to suit up for Canada at the 2026 IIHF U18 World Championship, where he had the most points by a defenceman with six. Lin has played parts of three seasons in the WHL, totalling 110 points (19G-91A).

Nate Misskey

Melfort, Sask.'s Nate Misskey hit the university waters in 2025-26, netting 10 points (4G-6A) in 35 games with UMass-Lowell. Previously, the 6-foot-4, 212-pound right-shot defenceman turned in parts of four seasons on the Island with the Victoria Royals, including two turns as an alternate captain. Misskey, now 21, totalled 95 points (22G-73A) in 179 games, including a 47-point (10G-37A) run in 2024-25 that also saw the Royals reach the second round of the 2025 WHL Playoffs, along with one of the newest members of the Sharks' prospect pool.

Joshua Ravensbergen

The puck stops here! Joshua Ravensbergen, 19, has made history as the first netminder in Prince George's history to win WHL Goaltender of the Year (Hockey Hall of Famer Grant Fuhr and Kevin Eastman previously won as members of the Victoria Cougars). The 6-foot-6, 195-pound puckstopper went 32-13-0-0 with a 2.51 goals-against average, a .919 save percentage and four shutouts to claim the title. Ravensbergen led all WHL netminders in wins and save percentage, tied for second in shutouts and clocked in at fourth in GAA. He was also named to the WHL Western Conference First All-Star Team. After breaking into the WHL as an undrafted free agent, Ravensbergen has surpassed 30 wins twice. Over three seasons, the North Vancouverite owns an eye-popping 91-30-4-2 record, a 2.68 GAA, a .909 save percentage and 10 shutouts. San Jose snapped him up in the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft with the 30th overall pick.

Colton Roberts

Another sizeable defender with a right-hand shot, 6-foot-4, 209-pound Colton Roberts registered 11 points (3G-8A) in 29 outings with Colorado College in 2025-26. But he also mentored a young Ryan Lin during his Vancouver Giants tenure- and the pair were even roommates at San Jose's recent development camp. Roberts held down the Giants blueline with 75 points (16G-59A) in 195 games over parts of four seasons. He was selected with the 131st overall pick in the fifth round of the 2024 NHL Draft.

Keaton Verhoeff

A big year saw Keaton Verhoeff get called in the top 10, take on new roles at the international level and give a new league a spin. After collecting 20 points (6G-14A) with the University of North Dakota, the Victoria Royals alum wore the 'C' for Canada at the 2026 IIHF U18 World Championship, where he logged four helpers. The Fort Saskatchewan, Alta. product also had four assists at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship en route to a bronze medal. The 2025 WHL Rookie of the Year finalist was with the Royals for parts of two seasons, highlighted by a 21-goal, 45-point campaign in 2024-25. He was one of the highest-drafted defencemen in 2026 as the ninth overall pick.

Carson Wetsch

It's on to the professional ranks for Kelowna Rockets captain Carson Wetsch! The 20-year-old enjoyed one of his strongest WHL seasons with a 72-point (22G-50A) season in the Okanagan. Wetsch has surpassed the 20-goal mark for three straight seasons and ranked second on the Rockets in points. Wetsch, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound winger, also logged seven games with three or more points, highlighted by a one-goal, three-assist effort against the Regina Pats in December. The North Vancouver, B.C. skater added four points (2G-2A) in eight playoff games and appeared in all three matches for Kelowna at the 2026 Memorial Cup. The 2024 third-round pick (82nd overall) signed his three-year, entry-level deal with the Sharks in May and is expected to join the AHL Barracuda in 2026-27.

Over the month of August, the Western Hockey League will be celebrating the WHL Graduates from the 2025-26 season in a 23-part, team-by-team series.

Today, we continue with the graduating trio from the Kamloops Blazers

Jordan Keller (F)

Hometown: Kamloops, B.C.
WHL Career Stats: 264 GP – 94 G-108 A – 202 points
WHL Draft: 2020 – Third Round, 48th Overall (Saskatoon Blades)

For Jordan Keller, the phrase 'all roads lead home' couldn't be more true.

After a junior hockey career that spanned parts of five seasons across two Clubs, the 21-year-old is exiting the Western League as a member of his hometown club, the Kamloops Blazers.

But, despite ending his campaign with Kamloops, Keller's career first began two provinces over.

Keller was originally selected 48th overall by the Saskatoon Blades in the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft, making his WHL debut don December 4, 2021 against the Winnipeg ICE. In total, Keller spent the two-plus seasons as a member of the Blades, including a 30-point campaign in 66 games during the 2022-23 WHL Season.

On November 24, 2023, Keller was sent to the Kamloops Blazers as part of the blockbuster trade that saw Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Fraser Minten move to Saskatoon. Eager to play in front of his hometown, Keller made his Blazers debut one day after being acquired by Kamloops. The forward also scooped up his first point with the Blazers in the same outing, assisting on a goal in a 6-3 victory over the Vancouver Giants.

Keller went on to record 43 points (17 G-26 A) to round out the 2023-24 season with the Blazers.

And, while impressive, the hometown forward was just getting started.

In his first full campaign with Kamloops, Keller set a career high in goals (31), assists (34), and points (65). The forward also led the WHL in power-play goals in the same season, collecting 19 tucks on the 'man advantage.'

Keller's final WHL campaign followed a similar tune, as the British Columbian recorded his third consecutive 50-plus point season. In 53 regular season appearances Keller racked up 55 points (27 G-28 A), boasting a points-per-game average of over one for the first time his in junior hockey career.

Keller closes out his WHL career with 202 points (94 G-108 A) in 264 regular season games, including more than 150 points in a Blazers uniform.

Ryan Michael (D)

Hometown: Langley, B.C.
WHL Career Stats: 231 GP – 10 G-72 A – 82 points
WHL Draft: 2020 – Third Round, 62nd Overall (Kamloops Blazers)

For the first time in five seasons, the Kamloops Blazers will dress a blueline that will be without longtime defenceman, Ryan Michael.

The 2005-born defenceman is departing from the Western Hockey League having completed his 20-year-old season in Kamloops.

Originally selected 62nd overall by the Kamloops Blazers in the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft, Michael first made his WHL debut on October 2, 2021 – recording as assist against the Prince George Cougars.

The Langley, B.C., product continued his hot streak in his first full season, leading all Blazers rookies in points with 12 (3 G-9 A) in 60 regular season games

Michael continued to develop his game over the next two seasons, becoming a key part of the Blazers’ blue line and leadership group. After serving as the Club's alternate captain for two seasons, Michael's farewell campaign was further celebrated by his promotion to team captain for the 2025-26 season..

And, the newly-minted captain responded with a career year offensively.

Michael registered a career-best three goals, 31 assists, and 34 points in 67 regular season appearances, leading all Kamloops defencemen in scoring for the the 2025-26 campaign.

In total, Michael suited up with the Blazers on 231 occasions, closing out his WHL career with an impressive 82 points (10 G-72 A).

Rhett Ravndahl (D)

Hometown: Birch Hills, Sask.
WHL Career Stats: 199 GP – 9 G-29 A – 38 points
WHL Draft: 2020 – Fourth Round, 83rd Overall (Portland Winterhawks)

The Western League will miss you, Rhett!

After hearing his named called in the fourth round of the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft by the Portland Winterhawks, the Birch Hills, Sask., product didn't wait long before stapling himself into the WHL scene. The blueliner made his WHL debut with the Winterhawks on September 24, 2022, against the Kelowna Rockets – and collected his first career point, an assist, just one game later.

Ravndahl spent parts of two seasons in Portland, before being acquired by the Brandon Wheat Kings at the 2024 WHL Trade Deadline. The move saw Ravndahl swap spots with former Wheat Kings captain and Detroit Red Wings first-round selection Nate Danielson.

In a similar fashion to his time in Portland, Ravndahl called Brandon home for parts of two seasons. In 57 appearances with the 'Wheaties,' the Saskatchewan-born talent collected nine points (3 G-6 A).

On January 7, 2025, Ravndahl was involved in a second trade. This time, the blueliner packed his bags and joined the B.C. Division's Kamloops Blazers.

It was in Kamloops where the veteran blueliner got the opportunity to step into a larger role with his organization, as he posted a career-best four goals, 12 assists, and 16 points in 55 regular season outings. Ravndahl's plus-12 rating and 0.29 points-per-game average also went down as career highs in the WHL.

In total, Ravndahl skated in 199 regular season games split between the Winterhawks, Wheat Kings, and Blazers, and finishes his junior career with 38 points (9 G-29 A).

Over the month of August, the Western Hockey League will be celebrating the WHL Graduates from the 2025-26 season in a 23-part, team-by-team series.

Today, we continue with the reigning WHL Champions, the Everett Silvertips

Nolan Chastko (F)

Hometown: Brandon, Man.
WHL Career Stats: 131 GP – 16 G-33 A – 49 points
WHL Draft: Listed (Prince George Cougars)

Nolan Chastko’s Western Hockey League career was defined by his willingness to do whatever his team needed.

The Brandon, Man. product signed with the Prince George Cougars as an undrafted player in 2022 before eventually making his way to Everett, Wash. After making a fistful of preseason appearances with the Cougars, Chastko made his WHL debut on September 21, 2024, as a 19-year-old for the Silvertips.

He made an immediate impact in Everett, recording 14 points in 63 regular season appearances during the 2024-25 WHL campaign before playing in all 13 games of the 2025 WHL Playoffs that saw the Silvertips advance to the Western Conference Championship Series.

His final season brought another unique chapter to the veteran.

Out of roster necessity, the natural centreman was thrust onto the Silvertips' blue line for 25 games during the 2025-26 WHL Regular Season. And, while a difficult adjustment for most, Chastko took on the challenge with ease. He recorded 13 points and a plus-12 rating during that stretch and concluded his final regular season campaign with career-best, 10 goals, 25 assists, and 35 points in 68 games.

During the 2026 WHL Playoffs, Chastko was one of three 20-year-olds to hoist the Ed Chynoweth Cup as members of Everett's first-ever WHL Championship. In 18 post-season appearances, the Silvertips' 'Swiss-Army Knife' recorded nine points (2 G-7 A) and scored in the championship-clinching Game 5 victory over the Prince Albert Raiders.

Chastko closes out his WHL career with 49 points (16 G-33 A) in 131 regular season games in Tips Country

Chastko will now use his WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement to continue his education and hockey career with the University of Manitoba Bisons for the 2026-27 season.

Rylan Gould (F)

Hometown: Headingley, Man.
WHL Career Stats: 311 GP – 78 G-123 A – 201 points
WHL Draft: 2020 – Second Round, 42nd Overall (Swift Current Broncos)

Originally selected 42nd overall by the Swift Current Broncos in the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft, Rylan Gould spent the first four seasons of his junior career in Speedy Creek. It was there where the Headingley, Man., product developed into one of the Broncos’ most reliable, offensive contributors.

Gould first made his WHL debut on October 1, 2021, against the Medicine Hat Tigers, and posted 13 points (4 G-9 A) in his rookie campaign with the Broncos. But, it wouldn't be until the 2023-24 season where the forward truly broke out, recording a career-high, 68 points (23 G-45 A) in 68 games. He followed that with another strong campaign in 2024-25, posting 66 points (29 G-37 A) in 60 regular season appearances..

In the 2025-26 WHL Season, Gould got a change of scenery as he joined Everett's forward core following a brief stint with the NCAA’s Michigan Tech. Now, back in the Western League, Gould's addition proved to be monumental for the Tips as their hunt for their first-ever WHL Championship was heating up.

Gould recorded 50 points (21 G-29 A) in 53 regular season games with Everett, reaching the 200-point mark for his WHL career along the way. He then added 10 points (6 G-4 A) in 18 appearances during the Silvertips' WHL Championship-winning postseason..

After five seasons in the Western League, Gould closedsout his junior career with 201 points (78 G-123 A) in 311 regular season games. Plus, his name on the Ed Chynoweth Cup, of course!

Zackary Shantz (F)

Hometown: Sucker Creek, Alta.
WHL Career Stats: 213 GP – 49 G-78 A – 127 points
WHL Draft: 2020 – Third Round, 66th Overall (Prince George Cougars)

In his five-season stint in the Western Hockey League, Zackary Shantz found himself all over Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest. But, as he graduates from the League, the speedy forward will always call 'Everett' home.

The Sucker Creek, Alta., product was originally selected 66th overall by the Prince George Cougars in the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft and made his WHL debut on November 27, 2021, against the Kelowna Rockets. He spent parts of two seasons in Prince George before joining the Regina Pats following a trade in November 2022.

Shantz continued to develop his game in Regina, recording 51 points (17 G-34 A) in 117 total appearances with the Pats.

Looking to bolster their depth scoring, the Tips acquired Shantz from Regina in January 2025.

The move to Everett provided Shantz with a fresh opportunity, becoming an immediate impact on the Silvertips roster. Shantz recorded 11 points (5 G-6 A) in 21 regular season games to close out the 2024-25 campaign with Everett – and, he was only getting started.

The veteran forward posted career highs across the board during the 2025-26 regular season, exploding for 65 points (27 G-38 A) in 66 regular season games.

His new level of production also carried into the 2026 WHL Playoffs.

Shantz recorded 14 points (4 G-10 A) in 18 games during a postseason that saw Everett capture its first Ed Chynoweth Cup. He also recorded three assists in the championship-clinching Game 5 victory over Prince Albert.

Shantz closes out his WHL career with 127 points (49 G-78 A) in 213 regular season games – and, let's not forget about his 22 points (7 G-15 A) in 38 career WHL Playoff appearances.

In the lead-up to the 2026-27 hockey season, we’re diving into the WHL prospect pool for every NHL team. To be included in this list, a player must be recently drafted, signed to an NHL contract, or meet the NHL’s criteria for rookie status.

The Pittsburgh Penguins created one of the most memorable moments of the 2026 NHL Draft when they selected the superstar Ruck twins from the Medicine Hat Tigers.

Harrison Brunicke

Six-foot-3, 196-pound defenceman Harrison Brunicke skated into history in 2025-26 when he became the first South African-born skater to make his NHL debut. Brunicke, 20, ended up netting his first NHL goal in nine games with the Pens before getting more ice time with the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. He had another eight points (1G-7A) in 11 spins at the AHL level. The jersey-swapping continued as Brunicke represented Canada at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship and returned to the Kamloops Blazers for a final run at the WHL level. Brunicke tallied 24 points (2G-22A) in 24 games with the Blazers and an assist in four playoff games to close out his tenure in the B.C. Division. He owns 83 points (21G-62A) in 175 games over parts of five seasons in Kamloops. Pittsburgh snapped up the smooth-skating blueliner with the 44th overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NHL Draft.

Atley Calvert

Moose Jaw's Atley Calvert has had to fight and claw for every inch of ice he's gotten in the professional ranks- and it's paying off. The 22-year-old signed a two-year, entry-level deal with the Penguins as an undrafted free agent in July. Calvert, who clocks in at 6-foot-1, 194 pounds, is coming off his first full season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, where he posted 16 goals (including one game-winner and a shorthanded strike) and 22 assists for 38 points and a +19 rating in 70 games. He ranked sixth on the team in points and goals. Calvert also made his hometown Warriors as an undrafted forward and went on to log 220 points (105G-115A) in 237 games over parts of five seasons, including a 95-point run (47G-48A) in 2023-24 that saw him crack the WHL East Division Second All-Star Team and help the Warriors to their first-ever WHL Championship. He signed an AHL deal with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton just weeks after the end of the WHL Playoffs and Memorial Cup and split his rookie pro season between the AHL Penguins and ECHL's Wheeling Nailers.

Kale Dach

Pittsburgh's 2025 seventh-round pick (201st overall) burst onto the WHL scene with 75 points (34G-41A) in 63 games for the Calgary Hitmen. Dach finished second on the team in points, goals and assists while ranking fourth in scoring among all WHL rookies. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound centreman also picked up eight game-winning goals and won 549 (52.3%) faceoffs. Dach, from Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., wore an 'A' in his first WHL season and was named a finalist for WHL Rookie of the Year while making the Eastern Conference Second All-Star team.

Tanner Howe

Fans familiar with the feisty side of Tanner Howe's game can expect a ferocious effort in 2026-27 as the skilled winger looks forward to a fully healthy season. Recovery from a knee injury kept Howe on the sidelines for much of his first professional season in the AHL, but he did manage to return to tally 16 points (8G-8A) and 43 penalty minutes in 27 regular-season outings and five points (3G-2A) in 14 playoff games. Originally selected with the 46th overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NHL Draft, the 5-foot-11, 183-pound forward brings plenty of pedigree as a former Regina Pats captain and member of Canada's 2025 IIHF World Junior squad. The Prince Albert, Sask. product totalled 279 points (110G-169A) in 254 games with the Pats and Hitmen over parts of five seasons.

Peyton Kettles

Eighteen-year-old Peyton Kettles missed the bulk of the season with a shoulder injury that required surgery, but managed to sign his three-year, entry-level deal and get back on the ice with the Kelowna Rockets at the 2026 Memorial Cup. The 6-foot-6, 198-pound rearguard appeared in five regular-season games with the Swift Current Broncos and Rockets, nabbing a goal and two assists, as well as significant ice time in three games at the Memorial Cup. Kettles, from Headingley, Man., was drafted by the Penguins with the 39th overall pick in round two back in 2025. He'll be looking for a bounceback with the Rockets in 2026-27.

Ryan Miller

The silver lining to an early playoff exit? Portland Winterhawks captain Ryan Miller got to make his AHL debut in a pair of outings with the Penguins. The 6-foot, 180-pound centreman popped off for a career-best 30-goal, 45-assist run for 75 points in 65 games, good for second on the Hawks in points, goals and assists. Miller, 19, had another goal and assist in four playoff games. He was selected with the 130th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2025 NHL Draft and has racked up 121 points (52G-69A) in 162 games over parts of four seasons in the Rose City and has competed in the 2024 WHL Championship and 2025 Western Conference Championship.

Oliver Okuliar

It's a new team and a fresh start for Slovak forward Oliver Okuliar. The 26-year-old was acquired by the Penguins in a mid-June trade with the Florida Panthers and promptly signed a one-year, two-way contract. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound forward appeared in 46 games for Skelleftea AIK in the Swedish Hockey League, putting up 29 points (15G-14A) and a +17 rating. He tied for first in playoff goals with six and notched 13 points in 15 postseason games to earn an SHL Championship. 2025-26 also saw Okuliar suit up for Slovakia at the Winter Olympics and 2026 IIHF World Championship. Okuliar spent 2019-20 with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, where he posted 68 points (33G-35A) in 55 games.

Owen Pickering

Will 2026-26 be Owen Pickering's time to shine? After sticking with the NHL club for 25 games in 2024-25, the 6-foot-5, 201-pound rearguard appeared in just four NHL contests in 2025-26, though he led all Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defenders with 28 points (7G-21A) in 68 games. A long-term injury took him out of much of the Penguins' AHL playoff run, but he flashed his shutdown potential with four points (1G-3A) in 11 games. Originally selected with the 21st overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, the 22-year-old has gotten positive feedback from Pens brass and could prove himself worthy of a roster spot at training camp in the fall. Over parts of four seasons, Pickering played in 205 regular-season games for the Swift Current Broncos, two as captain, logging 133 points (27G-106A) and making the WHL Central Division First All-Star Team in 2023 and 2024.

Liam Ruck

It seems the Ruck twins have been everywhere since being selected 22nd and 39th, respectively, in the 2026 NHL Draft. Liam, 18- the younger of the two twins by a couple of minutes- was first off the board after finishing second behind Markus in WHL scoring with 104 points (45G-59A) in 68 games. The Osoyoos, B.C. product tied for second in goals among all WHL skaters, third in game-winning goals with 10, and clocked in at fifth in assists. Liam, the right-handed shooter of the mirror twins, suited up for the 2025 CHL USA Prospects Challenge and 2026 WHL Prospects Game, where the twins combined with Tigers teammate and Canucks prospect Yaroslav Bryzgalov for a key goal. Liam led all WHL rookies with 25 goals in the 2024-25 season and saw plenty of ice on the powerplay as the Tabbies clawed their way to the 2025 WHL Championship. While Medicine Hat ultimately came up short of a repeat performance, Liam tied for the team lead with eight goals and four assists in 14 games to reach the 2026 WHL Eastern Conference Championship. To the surprise of no one, Ruck was named to the WHL Eastern Conference First All-Star Team and the CHL First All-Star Team.

Markus Ruck

He's number one! Markus, the left-handed shooter, paced the entire CHL with a whopping 108 points (21G-87A) in 68 games. The 6-foot, 167-pound centreman also topped the WHL with 87 assists and registered seven games with four or more points, highlighted by a one-goal, four-assist effort against the Edmonton Oil Kings in February. Markus had the aforementioned assist at the 2026 WHL Prospects Game and enjoyed a much-increased role on the Tabbies in the 2026 WHL Playoffs, notching 13 points (4G-9A) in 15 outings. Ruck joined his brother on the WHL Eastern Conference First All-Star Team and made the CHL Second All-Star Team. All eyes will be on the Tabbies in 2026-27 as the brothers return to the Gas City for a victory lap and another shot at a league championship.

Carter Sanderson

Prospect incoming! Pierre, South Dakota's Carter Sanderson will be a key feature of the Hitmen attack in 2026-27. The 6-foot-2, 196-pound power forward signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with Calgary in early July after recording 34 points (17G-17A) in 54 regular-season games with the USHL's Muskegon Lumberjacks. He also led the Lumberjacks to the USHL Final with seven points (4G-3A) in 14 playoff outings. Sanderson, 18, was selected by Pittsburgh with the 169th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2025 NHL Draft.

Originally selected 14th overall by the Edmonton Oil Kings in the 2024 CHL Import Draft, Czechia-born forward Miroslav Holinka wasted little time making his mark in North America.

His selection by the Oil Kings marked the second time the sharpshooter found himself on the draft board, as he heard his name called by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the fifth round of the 2024 NHL Draft in June.

Holinka made his Western Hockey League debut on September 28, 2024, against the Calgary Hitmen, scoring a goal and adding an assist in his first appearance with the Oil Kings. He went on to finish his rookie campaign with an impressive 45 points (19 G-26 A) in 47 games. The product of Zlin, Czechia and his 45-point rookie season had him tied for seventh in first-year scoring – alongside now-Anaheim Ducks prospect Mathis Preston and San Jose Sharks prospect Keaton Verhoeff.

His rookie campaign also turned heads at the NHL level, as the 'Buds' inked Holinka to a three-year, entry-level contract on June 15, 2025.

Holinka also represented Czechia at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship, helping his home country capture a bronze medal with four points in seven games.

His second season in Edmonton brought another step forward.

Holinka led the Oil Kings with 37 goals during the 2025-26 regular season while finishing second on the Club with a career-high 80 points (37 G-43 A) in 59 appearances. His 37 goals ranked 11th in the WHL, while his 80 points placed him among the League's top 15 scorers.

His breakout campaign was recognized with a spot on the WHL Eastern Conference Second All-Star Team.

Holinka closes out his WHL career with 125 points (56 G-69 A) in 106 regular season games, adding 11 points in 14 career playoff appearances.

The Sanford, Man., product made his WHL debut on September 23, 2022, against the Kamloops Blazers. Sotheran would then collect his first career point and multi-point outing in his second twirl, recording three assists against the Kelowna Rockets.

Sotheran continued to grow his game over the next several seasons, becoming an important part of two deep playoff runs with the Winterhawks. He recorded 11 points (4 G-7 A) in 14 appearances during the 2024 WHL Playoffs as Portland advanced to the 2024 WHL Championship Series, before adding 15 points (6 G-9 A) in 18 games the following spring as the Winterhawks once again reached the 2025 Western Conference Championship Series.

On January 6, 2026, the veteran blueliner was acquired by the Edmonton Oil Kings, as the Central Division club geared up for another deep run in the WHL Playoffs. At the time of the trade, he had already recorded 37 points in 37 games with Portland.

Sotheran continued to produce after arriving in Edmonton, collecting 35 points in just 30 regular season appearances with the Oil Kings. Combined with his production in Portland, he finished the campaign with 72 points (19 G-53 A) in 67 games, establishing career highs in goals, assists and points.

Sotheran added six assists in seven games during the 2026 WHL Playoffs, bringing his career postseason totals to 33 points in 48 appearances.

Zemlak joined Victoria full-time the following season and went on to spend parts of four seasons with the Royals, appearing in 147 games.

On August 15, 2024, Zemlak was acquired by the Tri-City Americans, putting together a productive 2024-25 campaign. The defenceman recorded 25 points in 56 games in his first – and only – season with the Ams. His 25 points and 20 helpers went down as career highs for the Fort McMurray, Atlantic., local.

For his 20-year-old season, Zemlak found himself headed to Edmonton's 'Kingdom' following a brief stint with the NCAA's Arizona State University.

Zemlak appeared in 31 regular season games with Edmonton, recording nine points (2 G-7 A) and a plus-10 rating. He added an assist in seven appearances during the 2026 WHL Playoffs.

In total, Zemlak closes out his WHL career having appeared in 234 regular season games, recording 67 points (17 G-50 A). He also collected one assist in 12 career postseason appearances.

Over the month of August, the Western Hockey League will be celebrating the WHL Graduates from the 2025-26 season in a 23-part, team-by-team series.

Today, we begin with the graduating players from the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Grayson Burzynski (D)

Hometown: Winnipeg, Man.
WHL Career Stats: 292 GP – 32G-104A – 136 points
WHL Draft: 2020 – Second Round, 44th Overall (Swift Current Broncos)

Originally selected 44th overall by the Swift Current Broncos in the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft, Grayson Burzynski made his Western Hockey League debut on October 2, 2021, against the Medicine Hat Tigers.

The Winnipeg product spent the first four seasons of his WHL career with Swift Current, developing into a steady presence on the Broncos’ blue line. In 233 career games with the Broncos, Burzynski boasted 21 points, 57 assists, and 78 points. He also suited up in 13 career post-season appearances, collecting four points (1 G-3 A).

On May 7, 2025, Burzynski was acquired by the Brandon Wheat Kings alongside teammate and fellow graduate, Luke Mistelbacher, in a trade with Swift Current. The move brought the 6-foot-4 defenceman back to his home province for the final season of his junior career.

And, Burzynski responded to the move with a career year.

In 59 games during the 2025-26 regular season, the blueliner posted a career-best of 47 assists and 58 points – not to mention a plus-20 rating.

Burzynski remained active during the 2026 WHL Playoffs, collecting three points (2 G-1 A) in four, first-round appearances. In total, he skated in 17 career playoff games, picking up seven points (3 G-4 A).

Burzynski closes out his WHL career having appeared in 292 regular season games, recording 136 points (32 G-104 A).

Nicholas Johnson (F)

Hometown: Calgary, Alta.
WHL Career Stats: 229 GP – 48G-82A – 130 points
WHL Draft: 2020 – 10th Round, 220th Overall (Portland Winterhawks)

Nicholas Johnson’s WHL career began with a 10th-round selection by the Portland Winterhawks in the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft.

Selected 220th overall, the Calgary-born product made his Western Hockey League debut on January 8, 2022, against the Kelowna Rockets. Johnson spent the next two-plus seasons with Portland before being acquired by the Brandon Wheat Kings on January 10, 2024.

Involved in one of the biggest deals of the 2023-24 WHL season, Johnson swapped places with former Wheat Kings captain and Detroit Red Wings prospect Nate Danielson.

Following the move, Johnson finished the 2023-24 season with Brandon, recording eight points in 16 appearances. He then established himself as a key offensive contributor for the Wheat Kings, posting 43 points (16G-27A) in 52 games during his 2024-25 campaign.

Johnson's final WHL season proved to be his most productive. The 21-year-old appeared in all 68 regular season games for Brandon in 2025-26, setting career highs in goals (22), assists (31), and points (53). His plus-34 rating was also the best mark of his career.

The forward also capped off his Western League career by reaching the 2026 WHL Playoffs with Brandon. In his five-season career, Johnson never missed the post-season and boasts six points (3G-3A) in 23 playoff appearances.

Johnson closes out his junior hockey career with 130 points (48G-82A) in 229 regular season games.

Luke Mistelbacher (F)

Hometown: Steinbach, Man.
WHL Career Stats: 257 GP – 110G-140A – 250 points
WHL Draft: Listed (Swift Current Broncos)

Going undrafted in the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft and joining the Swift Current Broncos as a listed player never fazed Luke Mistelbacher. Instead, it inspired him.

On September 23, 2022, the Steinbach, Man., product introduced himself to the WHL by scoring his first career goal in his debut against the Calgary Hitmen. Since then, the high-scoring forward was motivated to develop offensively in Speedy Creek, before eventually emerging as one of the Broncos’ top scoring threats.

His breakout came during the 2024-25 season.

Mistelbacher recorded 93 points (42G-51A) in 67 games, establishing career highs in goals, assists and points while reaching the 40-goal plateau for the first time in his career. Mistelbacher spent four seasons as a member of the Broncos, collecting 68 goals, 94 assists, and 162 points in 190 appearances.

On May 7, 2025, Mistelbacher was acquired by the Brandon Wheat Kings in a blockbuster deal, bringing the forward back to Manitoba for his final season of junior hockey.

Mistelbacher followed up his breakout campaign with another strong offensive season in Brandon. He finished the 2025-26 regular season with 88 points (42G-46A) in 67 games, leading the Wheat Kings in both goals and points.

His 42 goals ranked fifth in the WHL, while his 88 points placed him seventh in League scoring. It also marked the second consecutive season in which Mistelbacher scored 40 or more goals.

In total, Mistelbacher completed his WHL career with 250 points (110G-140A) in 257 regular season games – and, let's not forget about his 16 points (8G-8A) in 18 WHL Playoffs appearances. Mistelbacher also capped off his junior hockey career by being named to the WHL's 2025-26 Eastern Conference First All-Star Team.

Mistelbacher’s next chapter will come at the professional level. On April 8, 2026, the Belleville Senators announced that the forward had signed an AHL contract for the 2026-27 season after joining the Club on an amateur tryout following Brandon’s season.

Philadelphia's WHL contingent is flying high with a pair of 2026 Ed Chynoweth Cup champions.

Carson Bjarnason

One of the winningest Wheat Kings netminders of all time has traded major junior for the pro ranks. Six-foot-4, 207-pound Carson Bjarnason took on a 1B role with the AHL's Lehigh Valley Phantoms in 2025-26, going 14-11-4 with a 3.43 goals-against average and a .877 save percentage. One of his finest efforts came in a 35-save 6-2 win over the Bridgeport Islanders on November 5. The 21-year-old also made two late-season appearances with the ECHL's Reading Royals before returning to Lehigh Valley. The Flyers snapped up the Carberry, Man. product with the 51st overall pick in the second round of the 2023 NHL Draft. Bjarnason spent his entire WHL career in Brandon, going 75-61-13-2 with a 3.14 GAA, a .903 save percentage and six shutouts. He was named to the 2024 WHL East Division Second All-Star Team and was also a finalist for WHL Goaltender of the Year.

Matthew Gard

A change of pace saw towering forward Matthew Gard produce at his best pace yet in the WHL. The 6-foot-5, 197-pound pivot registered 33 points (17G-16A) in 55 games with the Red Deer Rebels and, post-trade-deadline, the Seattle Thunderbirds. Gard averaged .72 points in Seattle and finished the year with 515 faceoff wins (50.3%). The Winnipeg, Man. product stepped up again in the postseason with four points (1G-3A) in five tilts. Gard, who was selected with the 57th overall pick in the second round of the 2025 NHL Draft, will be expected to take on a key role on a T-Birds squad with lofty expectations in 2026-27.

Brek Liske

By now, fans from across the continent have seen the pictures of a young Brek Liske decked out in Flyers gear juxtaposed against a similarly huge grin at his first Philadelphia development camp. The 2026 second-round pick (53rd overall) enjoyed a career year with 24 points (7G-17A) and a +36 rating in 52 regular-season games with the Everett Silvertips, but the playoffs are what truly changed his trajectory. With Tips captain and Anaheim Ducks pick Tarin Smith sidelined with an upper-body injury after the first round, Liske was elevated to play on Everett's top pairing with projected top 2027 NHL pick Landon DuPont en route to capturing Everett's first Ed Chynoweth Cup. Liske logged four goals (including two game-winners) and 13 assists for 17 points and a +25 rating in 18 games, including the championship-clinching goal, three assists in Game 4 to eliminate Penticton in the Western Conference Championship, and points in four consecutive games in the Final. Liske, a 6-foot-2, 188-pound blueliner from Beausejour, Man., also competed for Canada at the 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase in hopes of earning a roster spot at the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship.

Martin Psohlavec

Nine picks after Liske was called, Philadelphia added another netminder to its stable of prospects with 62nd- overall selection Martin Psohlavec. The 6-foot-5, 183-pound puckstopper will suit up for his first season of North American hockey in 2026-27 with the Saskatoon Blades, having signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the club after going 42nd overall in the first round of the 2026 CHL Import Draft. Last season, Psohlavec went 31-11-0 with a 1.92 GAA and .928 save percentage and eight shutouts with HC Energie Karlovy Vary in Czechia's U20 league.

Kent (KJ) Sauer

Ahead of the 2026 NHL Draft, KJ Sauer committed to the Edmonton Oil Kings for 2026-27. Weeks later, his name was called 136th overall in the fifth round of the Draft in Buffalo, N.Y. The 6-foot-3, 203-pound forward is coming off three seasons with his hometown Andover High School, where he put up 89 points (35G-54A) in 101 games. He also had a brief stint in the USHL with the Lincoln Stars, where he added five points (2G-3A) in five games.

Marek Sklenicka

Gard's Seattle teammate made the most of his first campaign in the Dub, going 20-12-5-1 with a 3.21 GAA, a .902 save percentage, and three shutouts, highlighted by a 39-save clean sheet against the Spokane Chiefs. The 6-foot-4, 180-pound netminder battled valiantly in the 2026 WHL Playoffs, though the T-Birds would bow out in the first round. Scklenicka had a 1-2-1 record, a 3.67 GAA and .913 save percentage over that stretch. The 17-year-old Czech product was also invited to compete at the 2026 WHL Prospects Game and 2026 IIHF U18 World Championship, where he backstopped Czechia to bronze with a 2-1-0 record, a 1.91 GAA and .921 save percentage in three outings. Sklenicka was selected 120th overall in the fourth round of the 2026 NHL Draft.

Luke Vlooswyk

Liske's Everett Silvertips snapped up towering 6-foot-5, 210-pound defenceman Luke Vlooswyk at the 2026 WHL Trade Deadline- a move that would pay off in spades as the Tips went on a championship run with a depleted defensive corps. Vlooswyk tallied 11 points (1G-10A) and a +23 rating in 63 games with Everett and the Red Deer Rebels. He stepped it up for eight points (1G-7A) in 18 postseason tilts, including the tying strike in Game 3 of the Championship Series and another two assists at the 2026 Memorial Cup. Originally selected in the fifth round (157th overall) of the 2025 NHL Draft, Vlooswyk has racked up 30 points (5G-25A) in 139 games over parts of four seasons.

Today, we meet a pair of skaters aiming to go from the Calgary Hitmen to Canada's capital.

Blake Vanek

A change of scenery saw 6-foot-3, 210-pound forward Blake Vanek up his scoring. The Stillwater, Minn. product netted 36 points (19G-17A) in 69 games between the Wenatchee Wild and, after the 2026 WHL Trade Deadline, the Calgary Hitmen. The son of former NHLer Thomas Vanek scored a pair of game-winners for the Hitmen and added another goal in the 2026 WHL Playoffs, which saw Calgary bow out in the second round. Vanek, 18, was drafted by Ottawa with the 93rd overall pick in the third round of the 2025 NHL Draft. Vanek is primed to take a big step forward in his sophomore WHL season, especially after potting four points (2G-2A) in the penultimate game of the regular season.

Carter Yakemchuk

Six-foot-4, 207-pound defenceman Carter Yakemchuk has set his sights on making Ottawa's opening-night roster for 2026-27. The 2024 seventh-overall pick has certainly made a strong case to do so- after nearly making the NHL club out of camp last year, Yakemchuk made his NHL debut on April 25, 2026, registering two assists and earning first star of the game in a 3-2 showdown against the Detroit Red Wings. The Fort McMurray, Alta. product ended up with three points (1G-2A) in his first four NHL games to close out the campaign. He logged 40 points (10G-30A) in 54 games in his first season of professional hockey with the AHL's Belleville Senators. He finished fourth on the AHL Sens in points and was the second-highest scoring rookie defenceman across the entire league, trailing only 2025 WHL Defenceman of the Year Tyson Jugnauth (Seattle Kraken). Yakemchuk ranks as one of the greatest Hitmen of all time, amassing 180 points (70G-110A) in 245 regular season games across four seasons with the Hitmen. He holds the franchise record for goals by a defender and ranks fourth in points by a defender.

Saskatoon, Sask., - A familiar face is back with the Blue and Gold. The Saskatoon Blades have acquired 20-year-old defenceman Tyrone Sobry from the Prince George Cougars in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2028 Western Hockey League Prospects (WHL) Draft.

“We were informed on Friday that Tristan Doyle would be leaving for NCAA, so we immediately inquired about adding Tyrone back," said Blades president and general manager Colin Priestner. "Our coaches felt he was exactly what our defensive core needed as a 20-year-old. He plays hard, simple hockey and is extremely well liked in our room. He will be a strong shutdown presence for us this year.”

The 6-foot-2 blueliner was acquired by the Blades on October 14, 2025 in a trade with the Prince Albert Raiders. Sobry recorded three goals, four assists, and 20 penalty minutes in 29 games with Saskatoon last season. The left-handed blueliner was acquired by the Cougars at last year's trade deadline, where scored one goal and three assists in 28 games. Sobry added a shorthanded goal, an assist, and a +1 rating in 12 playoff games with Prince George last spring. In 144 career WHL games, the Saskatoon native has seven goals and 14 assists for 21 points.

"It's good to be home," said Sobry. "I can't wait to be back in the Blue and Gold."
