McSweeney’s WHL Community Collective: Prince George Cougars

Prince George may be the Northern Capital, but the Cougars' ability to impact communities stretches far past city limits. Look no further than the Spirit of Healthy Kids Program. The program initially launched as a reading program back in 2015, but has since expanded to share lessons about healthy habits, kindness and community involvement. In addition to school visits that see players read to classes and take part in group activities, the Cougars have teamed up with Spirit of the North to create videos covering everything from proper teeth brushing to managing screen time. "Screens have a way of sucking us in," forward Townes Kozicky explained in one video. "If we're not careful, we can lose control of our whole day and we can end up feeling low energy and down on ourselves." "The more time we spend on screens, the less time we have for other activities," defenceman Eli Johnson added. "Real life happens off screen. Don't miss it." More than 33,000 students in 220 elementary schools across Northern B.C. take part in the program and even come up with their own creative initiatives designed to encourage healthy lifestyles. This season, École La Grande-Ourse in Smithers, B.C., won a $5,000 prize for its 'Eat the Rainbow' challenge, which saw 100% participation among its small but strong population of 23 students. Another $5,000 in grants has been distributed to five other schools right in Prince George and as far away as Terrace, B.C. "While winning is certainly exciting, the true success of this program is the positive impact it has on the lives of young people across our region," a Cougars press release said. "By encouraging healthy habits and active lifestyles, schools are helping build a healthier and happier future for our children." The Cats look forward to seeing the program return for its 11th season in 2026-27.

Broncos acquire forward Meunier from Calgary, send defenceman Brown to Hitmen

Swift Current, SK – The Swift Current Broncos have acquired 2008-born forward Ty Meunier and a 2030 seventh-round WHL Prospects Draft Pick from the Calgary Hitmen in exchange for 2007-born forward Brennan Brown, a 2027 third-round WHL Prospects Draft Pick (Calgary), and a 2029 fourth-round WHL Prospects Draft Pick (Conditional).

Meunier, a product of St. Albert, Alberta, is set to enter his third Western Hockey League season after spending the past two years with the Prince Albert Raiders and Calgary Hitmen.

Originally selected seventh overall in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft, Meunier enjoyed a strong rookie campaign in 2024-25, recording 14 goals and 15 assists for 29 points in 68 games with Prince Albert.

Last season, the 17-year-old split time between the Raiders and Hitmen. He collected six goals and nine assists in 29 games with Prince Albert before being dealt to Calgary, where he added six goals and 11 assists for 17 points in 35 games to finish the season.

"We wish Brennan the very best and much success in Calgary," said Broncos General Manager and Head Coach Travis Crickard. "He is a first-class person with a great work ethic who fits a valuable need for the Hitmen.

"Ty Meunier is a former seventh-overall WHL Prospects Draft pick and a player who has a strong pedigree of scoring and producing. With an increased role and ice time on our team, we think he can be that as a member of the Broncos. We look forward to seeing him in the green and blue come September."

The Broncos thank Brennan for his dedication and contributions during his time in Swift Current.

Wenatchee Wild announce acquisition of WHL veteran Kayden Longley from Lethbridge Hurricanes

WENATCHEE, Wash. – The Wenatchee Wild have announced a trade with the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League (WHL), acquiring 2006-born forward Kayden Longley from the Hurricanes in exchange for a pair of WHL Prospects Draft selections. The Hurricanes will receive Wenatchee’s third-round selection in the 2027 WHL Prospects Draft originally assigned to the Brandon Wheat Kings, and the club’s fifth-round pick in the 2029 Prospects Draft.

Longley is entering his fourth full season of junior competition, and brings a wealth of WHL experience and leadership to the Wild organization. The Wainwright, Alberta native has appeared in 184 WHL contests with Lethbridge and the Kelowna Rockets, appearing in 48 with the Hurricanes after a trade this past November and tallying 37 points. His final point of the 2025-26 campaign was his 100^th in WHL play. He earned a leadership role right away with his new team, serving as one of Lethbridge’s alternate captains this past year.

Royals acquire 2007-born defenceman Kohn from the Regina Pats

Victoria, B.C. – The Victoria Royals announced today that they have acquired 2007-born defenceman Jonas Kohn from the Regina Pats in exchange for a 2030 fifth round selection.

Kohn, who hails from Stillwater, Minnesota, played 39 games for the Pats in the 2025-26 season, scoring four points in that time. Prior to joining the WHL, Kohn, who stands at 6-foot-4, 212 pounds, played for Stillwater High in Minnesota High School hockey, scoring 39 points (9G-30A) in 47 games over the course of two seasons.

“Jonas brings an important element to our defensive group with his size and strength“ said Royals General Manager Jake Heisinger. “He is difficult to play against and is real steady in his own zone. We are excited to add him to our group”.

The draft pick sent to Regina for Kohn was previously acquired by the Royals in a trade with Kelowna.

NHL Prospect Watch: Colorado Avalanche

In the lead-up to the 2026-27 hockey season, we’re diving into the WHL prospect pool for every NHL team. To be included in this list, a player must be recently drafted, signed to an NHL contract, or meet the NHL’s criteria for rookie status. Much like an avalanche, Colorado's prospect pool is gaining some serious momentum.

Beckett Hamilton 2026 74th-overall pick Beckett Hamilton's breakout is underway. The 5-foot-11, 174-pound forward led the Red Deer Rebels with 62 points (24G-38A) in 67 games, with 14 of his goals (including three game-winners) coming in the back half of the season after a switch to centre. He picked up a helper to lift Team East to a 5-4 overtime win at the 2026 WHL Prospects Game and led the Rebels with five points (2G-3A) in five playoff games against the powerhouse Prince Albert Raiders. Hamilton has been announced as the incoming captain for the Rebels in 2026-27. The dual Canadian-American citizen also represented Canada on the international stage for the first time at the 2026 IIHF U18 World Championship, where he scored three times in five games. Fabian Lysell The Avalanche acquired 23-year-old forward Fabian Lysell in a trade with the Boston Bruins on June 27, 2026. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound forward is coming off one of his most productive professional seasons after netting 42 points (17G-25A) and a +13 rating in 57 games with the AHL's Providence Bruins. He finished second on the team in game-winning strikes with five. Originally drafted by Boston with the 21st overall pick in the first round of the 2021 NHL Draft, Lysell made his NHL debut in the 2024-25 season, tallying three points (1G-2A) in 12 appearances with the big club. The Goteborg, Swe. product paced the Vancouver Giants with 62 points (22G-40A) in 53 games in 2021-22. He was also one of Vancouver’s most consistent postseason attackers, adding 21 points (4G-17A) in 12 games to reach Game 6 of the second round. Trent Miner After making his NHL debut in 2024-25, 6-foot-1, 185-pound netminder Trent Miner got four more call-ups to the Avalanche last season, going 1-0-3 with a 2.03 goals-against average, a .933 save percentage and a 29-save shutout against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Brandon, Manitoba native spent the bulk of the campaign with the AHL's Colorado Eagles, where he stayed consistent with a 17-8-8 record, a 2.62 GAA, a .904 save percentage and one clean sheet. Miner, 25, also backstopped the Eagles to the Calder Cup Conference Finals. The 2019 NHL seventh-round pick spent his entire major junior career with Vancouver, posting a statement 48-28-3-2 career record with a 2.49 goals-against average, a .910 save percentage and eight shutouts. His 48 wins are the fourth-most in Giants franchise history. Tristen Nielsen Fort St. John, B.C.'s Tristen Nielsen turned an AHL deal into his NHL debut in 2025-26. The 26-year-old AHL veteran signed a deal with the Colorado Eagles as a free agent and earned a shot with the Avalanche just weeks later. In four NHL spins, Nielsen notched his first point- a primary assist on Cale Makar's game-winner in a 1-0 shutout of the Chicago Blackhawks. The 5-foot-10, 192-pound forward logged 49 points (28G-32A) in 66 games, leading the Eagles in goals while finishing fifth in points and sixth in assists. Originally selected by the Calgary Hitmen with the 20th overall pick in the first round of the 2015 WHL Prospects Draft, Nielsen potted 82 goals and 93 assists for 175 points over 241 regular-season games with the Hitmen and the Giants. He broke into the pro ranks as an undrafted free agent with the Abbotsford Canucks and helped the Canucks' farm team to an AHL Championship in 2024-25. Tobias Tvrznik Six-foot-4, 180-pound puckstopper Tobias Tvrznik turned heads across the continent in his rookie WHL season. The Wenatchee Wild star went 16-18-2-2 with a 3.10 GAA, a .913 save percentage and one shutout. He made a whopping 60 saves in his WHL debut, a 4-3 shootout loss to the eventual-champion Everett Silvertips. Tvrznik, from Litomerice, Cze., ranked third among all WHL goaltenders in save percentage, iced seven games with 40 or more saves, and was named a Western Conference Finalist for WHL Goaltender of the Year. Colorado selected the 18-year-old with the 126th overall pick in the fourth round of the 2026 NHL Draft. Saige Weinstein Twenty-one-year-old Saige Weinstein split his first season of professional hockey between the ECHL's Utah Grizzlies and AHL's Colorado Eagles. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound defender nabbed a pair of assists and 18 penalty minutes in 30 games with Utah before earning three call-ups to Colorado, where he picked up his first pro goal. Weinstein locked up a three-year, entry-level contract with Colorado in 2023 as an undrafted free agent. The Edmonton, Alta. product spent parts of five seasons with the Spokane Chiefs, putting up 84 points (18G-66A) and 311 PIMs in 249 games. He was an alternate captain for the Chiefs in his final season and had 10 points (2G-10A) in 20 games to help Spokane reach the 2025 WHL Championship Series.

Tigers Sign Flames prospect Phillips To WHL Scholarship & Development Agreement

Medicine Hat, AB – The Medicine Hat Tigers are proud to announce the signing of 2007-born defenceman Mace'o Phillips to a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement. “Mace’o brings a physically dominant presence to our blue line. He uses his size, reach and mobility to control the walls and net front, shut down opponents and play with confidence," said Assistant General Manager Bobby Fox. "He’s also shown the ability to step up offensively with his first pass, lateral skating, and shot.” The 6-foot-6, 234-pound defenceman was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the third round (80th overall) of the 2025 NHL Draft. The Wayzata, Minnesota native tallied 11 points in 44 games with the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL during the 2025-26 season. Let's meet some of the up-and-comers aiming to join Regina Pats legend and 2023 first-overall pick Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Nathan Behm Six-foot-2, 208-pound winger Nathan Behm erupted for 38 goals (highlighted by five game-winners, a hat trick and seven multi-goal outings) and 48 assists for 86 points in 67 regular-season games. The Calgarian finished second on Kamloops in points, second in assists and third in goals to help the Blazers return to the WHL postseason. This marks the second-straight campaign that has seen Behm surpass the 30-goal threshold and average more than a point per game. The 19-year-old was selected by Chicago with the 66th overall pick in the third round of the 2025 NHL Draft and owns 184 points (81G-103) in 200 regular season matches across parts of four seasons with the Blazers. Ashton Cumby Bonnyville, Alta.'s Ashton Cumby reigns as one of the toughest customers in the WHL. The 6-foot-5, 216-pound Seattle Thunderbirds defender enjoyed his best offensive season yet with four tallies and 13 assists for 17 points, a +13 rating and 92 penalty minutes in 59 matches. Cumby was drafted with the 162nd overall pick in the sixth round of the 2025 Draft as an overager. Now 21, Cumby graduates from major junior with 36 points (6G-30A) and 361 penalty minutes in 256 games across parts of five seasons with the Winnipeg ICE/Wenatchee Wild organization and the T-Birds. He'll make the jump to the pro ranks with the AHL's Rockford IceHogs, having signed a two-year AHL contract with the club in late May.

Twelve skaters with WHL experience invited to 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase

Calgary, Alta.- Twelve players developed in the Western Hockey League have been invited to represent Canada at the 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase. The weeklong exhibition is the first step on the road to the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship. A total of 32 skaters will participate in practices, scrimmages and exhibition games against Finland, Sweden and the United States. The WHL contingent features six defencemen and six forwards, including seven first-round NHL Draft picks and two WHL champions. 2026 NHL sixth-overall pick and Calgary Flames prospect Carson Carels (Prince George Cougars / Cypress River, Man.), Vancouver Canucks first-rounder Braeden Cootes (Prince Albert Raiders / Sherwood Park, Alta.), and Victoria Royals alumnus Keaton Verhoeff (Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.) and Cole Reschny (Macklin, Sask.) are all eligible to return from the 2026 World Junior quad, which won bronze in Minnesota.

"We're excited to announce the 32 players who will attend the World Junior Summer Showcase in Windsor as we begin our preparation for the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship," National Junior Team General Manager and former WHL executive Alan Millar said. "This is an important opportunity for our staff to evaluate a talented group of players against top international competition while continuing to build our identity as a team. We're looking forward to seeing this group compete and bringing this showcase to Windsor in front of passionate Canadian hockey fans."

Jackson Smith (Tri-City Americans / Calgary, Alta.) played parts of three seasons with the Ams, netting 85 points (19G-66A) in 136 regular-season matches before being drafted by Columbus with the 14th overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

2025 WHL Rookie of the Year finalist Keaton Verhoeff scored 21 goals and 24 assists for 45 points in 63 games in 2024-25. He was selected by the San Jose Sharks with the ninth overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Carels, a 2026 WHL Defenceman of the Year finalist, posted a monster 73 points (20G-53) in 58 games in 2025-26 and cracked the WHL Western Conference First All-Star Team. Carels and Verhoeff were the two youngest skaters on Canada's 2026 World Juniors roster. Vancouver Giants standout Ryan Lin (Richmond, B.C.) battled through injury to hear his name called 21st overall by the Sharks in June. He logged 57 points (14G-43A) in his sophomore campaign in the Lower Mainland, surpassing 50 points for a second consecutive season. 2026 WHL Champion Brek Liske (Everett Silvertips / Beausejour, Man.) had a career-best 24-point (7G-17A) campaign under his belt before hitting a new gear in the postseason. With captain and Anaheim Ducks prospect Tarin Smith sidelined by injury, Liske was elevated to Everett's top pairing and went off for 17 points (4G-13A) in 18 games, including the championship-clinching goal. Philadelphia drafted Liske with the 53rd overall pick in the second round of the 2026 NHL Draft. Daxon Rudolph (Prince Albert Raiders / Lacombe, Alta.) reigned as the highest-drafted active WHLer at the 2026 Draft when Buffalo snapped him up with the fourth-overall selection. The Raiders alternate captain tied franchise legend Josh Morrissey for single-season strikes by a defenceman with 28, while tacking on 50 assists for 78 points in 68 games. The Defenceman of the Year finalist also tied for the lead in playoff scoring with 27 points (9G-18A) in 19 games while reaching the WHL Championship Series. Up front, Reschny dominated with 152 points (48G-104A) in 127 regular-season games with the Victoria Royals from 2022-25. He registered 25 points (9G-16A) in 11 playoff games in 2025 alone before being selected by Calgary with the 18th overall pick that June. Florida Panthers fourth-rounder Shea Busch (Everett Silvertips / North Vancouver, B.C.) got off to a hot start to the season with 18 points (13G-5A) in 12 games before being sidelined by injury for the remainder of the campaign. The 19-year-old returned to the ice for the 2026 WHL Playoffs and contributed 13 points (7G-6A) in 16 outings to help the Silvertips hoist the Ed Chynoweth Cup for the first time in franchise history. 2025 Vancouver Canucks 15th overall pick Braeden Cootes (Prince Albert Raiders / Sherwood Park, Alta.) made his NHL debut at the start of the 2025-26 season before returning to the WHL. Cootes notched 63 points (24G-39A) in 45 outings with the Seattle Thunderbirds and, post-WHL Trade Deadline, the Prince Albert Raiders. He won the Brad Hornung Memorial Trophy as the WHL's Most Sportsmanlike Player and helped the Raiders reach the Championship Series with 23 (7G-16) postseason points. Power forward Chase Harrington (Spokane Chiefs / Prince George, B.C.) is coming off a career-best 57-point (28G-29A) season while finishing eighth in the WHL in penalty minutes with 105. Harrington joined Carels and Reschny in the Flames' prospect pool when Calgary called his name 36th overall in the second round of the 2026 NHL Draft. Edmonton Oilers 2025 83rd-overall pick Tommy Lafreniere (Kamloops Blazers / St-Sauveur, Que.) caught fire with 41 goals and 36 assists for 77 points in 67 games to help the Blazers return to the WHL postseason and tie for sixth in goals among all WHLers in 2025-26. Speedy winger Cameron Schmidt (Victoria Royals / Prince George, B.C.) topped all WHLers with a monster 51 goals, while finishing third in the league points race with 100. The 2024 Dallas Stars third-round pick was recently acquired by the Victoria Royals after a dominant campaign with the Vancouver Giants and Seattle Thunderbirds. Landon DuPont (Everett Silvertips / Calgary, Alta.), the first exceptional status defenceman to play in the WHL, was invited to the World Junior Summer Showcase but will suit up for Canada at the upcoming Hlinka Gretzky Cup instead. The World Junior Summer Showcase runs from July 26-August 1 at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ont. Canada will hold practices on July 27 and 28 before facing off against Sweden on July 29, Finland on July 30 and the United States on August 1. The 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship kicks off on December 26, 2026, in Edmonton and Red Deer.

Cuthbertson signs WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with Hurricanes

Lethbridge, AB - The Lethbridge Hurricanes Hockey Club has announced the signing of 2011-born defenceman Evan Cuthbertson to a Western Hockey League Scholarship and Development Agreement. “I am extremely excited to sign with the Hurricanes. Playing in the WHL has always been a dream of mine and getting the opportunity to do that in Lethbridge makes it even better. It’s a great hockey city with passionate fans, and I can’t wait to be part of that environment,” said Cuthbertson. “Signing a WHL Player Agreement means a lot to me and my family. It represents years of hard work, sacrifice, and support finally paying off. My family has been with me through early‑morning practices, long road trips, injuries, and every high and low along the way, so this moment feels like something we achieved together. For me, it’s the first real step toward chasing my dream of playing in the NHL, and for my family, it’s a proud milestone knowing that all the time, effort, and belief they invested in me helped make this possible.” Cuthbertson, 15, was selected by the Hurricanes in the third round (58^th overall) in the 2026 WHL Prospects Draft. The Kamloops, British Columbia, product appeared in 16 regular season games with the Yale Hockey Academy U15 Prep team, where he amassed 12 points (2g-10a) along with six penalty minutes. He also skated in one regular season game with the Yale U17 Prep team during the 2025-2026 season, where he was held pointless. The 6’0, 165-pound rearguard represented Team Black at the 2026 BC Cup tournament where he registered two penalty minutes in four contests. Cuthbertson also appeared in four games at the John Reid Memorial Tournament being held pointless. In 2024-2025, Cuthbertson collected 21 points (6g-15a) along with two penalty minutes in 16 games with the Thompson Blazers U15 AAA team while adding three points (1g-2a) in five post-season games. “I’m really excited for my first WHL camp in August. It’s something I’ve been working toward for a long time, and getting the chance to be on the ice with WHL players and coaches is a huge step in my development. I’m looking forward to competing, learning, and showing that I belong at that level. It’s going to be a great experience, and I can’t wait to get started,” added Cuthbertson. Zachary Lansard Seventeen-year-old Zachary Lansard played a key role in helping the Regina Pats return to the WHL postseason in 2025-26. The 6-foot, 172-pound winger potted 24 goals (including three game-winners) and 32 assists for 56 points in 68 games. He finished third on the Pats in points and goals before lighting the lamp three times against the powerhouse Medicine Hat Tigers in the 2026 WHL Playoffs. The Ste. Anne, Man. product earned an invitation to the 2026 WHL Prospects Game and Canada's pre-tournament camp ahead of the 2026 IIHF U18 World Championship. Carolina called his name with the 68th overall pick in the third round of the 2026 NHL Draft. Ronan Seeley Chicago Wolves alternate captain Ronan Seeley was rewarded for one of his best professional AHL seasons with a call-up to the big show for Carolina's regular-season finale. The 23-year-old made two blocks over 19 shifts in 15:12 of ice time in his NHL Debut, helping the Canes earn a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders. At the AHL level, Seeley did some of his best work yet with 23 points (11G-12A) in 69 games, in addition to a goal and a helper in 21 playoff tilts to help the Wolves reach the Calder Cup Final. The 6-foot-1, 192-pound defender spent four seasons with the Everett Silvertips, tallying 102 points (20G-82A) in 190 games. He captained the Silvertips in his final season of major junior, was named a 2022 WHL U.S. Division Second-Team All-Star and won gold for Canada at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship. Seeley was chosen by Carolina with the 208th overall pick in the seventh round of the 2020 NHL Draft.
