Wild prospect Joudrey records hat trick to help Alberta advance to gold medal game at 2023 WHL Cup

Red Deer, Alta. – Wenatchee Wild prospect Caelan Joudrey recorded a hat trick as Team Alberta scored a 7-3 victory over Team Saskatchewan to advance to the gold medal game at the 2023 WHL Cup presented by FPS Payment Saturday afternoon at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

A four-goal first period saw Alberta get out of the gates early, with markers from Joudrey (Wenatchee Wild / Airdrie, Alta.), Brett Olson (Vancouver Giants / Spruce Grove, Alta.), Patrick Sopiarz (Prince George Cougars / Edmonton, Alta.) and Matthew Williams (Edmonton Oil Kings / Leduc, Alta.).

Saskatchewan responded during the opening 20 minutes with goals from Caine Wilke (Everett Silvertips / Saskatoon, Sask.) and captain Dayne Beuker (Lethbridge Hurricanes / Humboldt, Sask.) but trailed 4-2 at the first intermission.

Olson added his second of the game and third of the tournament in the second period to give Alberta a commanding 5-2 advantage after 40 minutes of play.

Jonah Sivertson (Prince Albert Raiders / Regina, Sask.) pulled Saskatchewan back within two goals midway through the third period, but that was as close as they would get as Joudrey closed out the contest with two goals of his own to complete the hat trick.

In net, Carter Esler (Spokane Chiefs / Okotoks, Alta.) made 30 saves to backstop Alberta.

With the victory, Alberta advances to the gold medal game of the 2023 WHL Cup presented by FPS Payment, where they will take on Manitoba for provincial supremacy. Puck drop is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. MT.

For Team Saskatchewan, they will face Team B.C. in the bronze medal game Sunday at 10:15 a.m. MT.
