WHL Roundup: Chiefs rout Winterhawks, Outhouse and Bethune lead Royals, Cougars to victory

Brayden Pachal and Regan Nagy each scored a pair of goals as the Prince Albert Raiders topped the Kootenay ICE Friday at the Art Hauser Centre.
Colton Veloso answered back with a pair of goals for the ICE, but it couldn’t stop the wave of offence from the Raiders Friday as they exploded for four goals in the third period.
Jordy Stallard (Winnipeg Jets) and Pachal bookended Veloso’s first of the game in the first period. A short-handed goal from Brett Leason gave the Raiders a two-goal lead after 40 minutes and they weren’t done there.
Parker Kelly (Ottawa Senators) scored the eventual game-winner 1:05 into the final period followed 92 seconds later by Pachal’s second of the game to make it a sizeable lead. Veloso’s second of the game and Jonathan Smart’s fifth of the season made things close, but Nagy would add a pair of late goals to close out the victory.
Ian Scott (Toronto Maple Leafs) stopped 21 of 24 shots in the victory while Duncan McGovern and Bailey Brkin combined for 23 saves on 30 shots.

Red Deer Rebels (2) at Saskatoon Blades (3)

Jake Kustra scored the lone goal of the third period Friday as the Saskatoon Blades edged the visiting Red Deer Rebels.
WHL On the Run Player of the Week Braylon Shmyr opened the scoring with the only goal of the first, but the Rebels responded in the second with Reece Johnson and Alex Morozoff’s first career WHL goal giving the Rebels a 2-1 lead.
The Blades found some resolve though and got back the lead. Bradly Goethals answered late in the second and Kustra added the winner in the third as the Blades won their sixth straight game.
Nolan Maier continue to have the hot hand for the Blades, stopped 22 of 24 shots. Riley Lamb stopped 24 of 27 in the loss.

Swift Current Broncos (2) at Brandon Wheat Kings (3) — OT

Ty Lewis (Colorado Avalanche) scored his 21st goal of the year 3:37 into overtime Friday, lifting the Brandon Wheat Kings to an important divisional win against the Swift Current Broncos.
Matteo Gennaro put his team ahead twice during the course of the game, but the Wheat Kings fought back twice to tie the game before going ahead for good in overtime.
Baron Thompson and Evan Weinger scored in regulation for the Wheat Kings.
Logan Thompson stopped 24 of 26 shots to defeat the Broncos while Logan Flodell stopped 32 of 35 shots in the overtime loss.

Moose Jaw Warriors (5) at Calgary Hitmen (3)

For the second time this season, the Moose Jaw Warriors conquered the Calgary Hitmen in Cowtown, winning by a 5-3 final Friday.
Tanner Jeannot had a pair of goals and three points while Vince Loschiavo, Jayden Halbgewachs (San Jose Sharks) and Dmitri Zaitsev (Washington Capitals) all recorded a goal and an assist.
Riley Stotts had a pair of goals for the Hitmen in the loss. The Warriors scored twice in each of the first and second periods, which was enough to fend off the comeback attempt by the Hitmen in the third.
Adam Evanoff stopped all 18 shots sent his way while Brody Willms allowed three goals on five shots. Nick Schneider (Calgary Flames) and Matthew Armitage combined for 37 saves on 42 shots.

Vancouver Giants (5) at Lethbridge Hurricanes (2)

Tyler Benson (Edmonton Oilers) scored twice and Ty Ronning (New York Rangers) had a goal and three points as the Vancouver Giants improved to 2-0 on their road trip through Alberta Friday against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
Jordy Bellerive (Pittsburgh Penguins) and Alex Kannok Leipert traded goals in the first period, leaving the Giants to strike in the second period. Benson tallied a pair of quick goals, scoring twice in 119 seconds to bookend a goal from Giorgio Estephan as the Giants took over the lead after 40 minutes.
Ronnng and Jared Dmytriw rounded out the scoring in the third for the Giants.
David Tendeck stopped 33 of 35 shots in the victory while Stuart Skinner stopped 21 of 25 in the loss.

Edmonton Oil Kings (1) at Medicine Hat Tigers (5)

Led by a pair of goals and three points from Max Gerlach, the Medicine Hat Tigers dominated the Edmonton Oil Kings Friday at the Canalta Centre.
Gerlach and Baxter Anderson had the Tigers up 2-0 after 40 minutes and David Quenneville (New York Islanders) scored early in the third to extend the lead to three. David Kope broke up Michael Bullion’s shutout bid, but it wasn’t enough to change the tide of the game.
Mark Rassell and Gerlach added goals later in the period to round out the Tigers’ offence for the night. Bullion finished the game with 19 saves on 20 shots while Josh Dechaine stopped 21 of 26 shots in the loss.
Quenneville and Rassell each finished with a goal and an assist in the contest. Kristians Rubins added a pair of assists in the win.

Tri-City Americans (3) at Prince George Cougars (4)

Jared Bethune tallied a hat trick Friday at home for the Prince George Cougars, including the game-winner early in the third period as the Cougars gave the Tri-City Americans a rude welcome to Northern B.C. Friday.
Bethune scored twice in the first, but the Americans got back in the game on Nolan Yaremko’s 13th of the campaign early in the second. Later in the period, Josh Maser scored his 16th of the season and Bethune completed his hat trick 6:40 into the third to hand the Cougars the victory.
Sasha Mutala and Riley Sawchuk added late goals for the Americans.
Tavin Grant earned the win Friday for the Cougars, stopping 34 of 37 shots. Patrick Dea stopped 16 of 20 in the loss for Tri-City.

Portland Winterhawks (3) at Spokane Chiefs (9)

Hudson Elynuik (Carolina Hurricanes) and Jaret Anderson-Dolan (Los Angeles Kings) each had a pair of goals and seven different players scored for the Chiefs Friday as they routed the Portland Winterhawks on home ice.
The Chiefs opened the game with three goals in the first period. Jake Gricius got Portland on the board early in the second, but Zach Fischer (Calgary Flames) quickly restored the three-goal lead. Cody Glass (Vegas Golden Knights) cut the Chiefs’ lead to two, but Spokane kept coming with goals from Jake McGrew and Elynuik to close out the middle period.
Elynuik, Anderson-Dolan and Luke Gallagher added goals for Spokane in the third while Skyler McKenzie (Winnipeg Jets) added his 28th goal in the loss for the Winterhawks.
Dawson Weatherill stopped 16 of 19 shots in the victory. Cole Kehler (Los Angeles Kings) stopped 41 of 50 in the loss.
Eli Zummack finished with three assists while both Nolan Reid and Ty Smith added a pair of helpers.

Seattle Thunderbirds (6) at Kelowna Rockets (4)

Donovan Neuls scored twice and Nolan Volcan scored the game-winner Friday as the Seattle Thunderbirds knocked off the Kelowna Rockets at Prospera Place.
Leading 2-1 after 20 minutes on goals from Aaron Hyman and Dillon Hamaliuk, the Rockets roared back in a wild second period to tie the game 4-4 after 40 minutes.
That would be all the offence for Kelowna though as Volcan scored midway through the second and Austin Strand (Los Angeles Kings) added the insurance goal minutes later.
Leif Mattson, Gordia Ballhorn, Carsen Twarynski and Kyle Topping scored in the loss for Kelowna.
Liam Hughes turned aside 26 of 30 shots in the victory. James Porter stopped 21 of 27 shots in the loss.

Everett Silvertips (0) at Victoria Royals (5)

Matthew Phillips (Calgary Flames), Dante Hannoun and Braydon Buziak each had a goal and an assist while Griffen Outhouse stopped all 38 shots to silence the Everett Silvertips Friday at home.
Outhouse stopped 12 shots in the first, 10 in the second and 16 in the third for the 10th shutout of his WHL career.
Leading 1-0 after 40 minutes, the floodgates opened in the third. Jeff de Wit scored 17 seconds into the third to ignite a four-goal period from the Royals. Recent acquistion Andrei Grishakov scored in his first game with his new club.
Matt Fontyene led the charge for the Silvertips, leading the team with six shots. Dustin Wolf and Danton Belluk combined for 24 saves on 29 shots Friday.
