WHL alumnus Smyth to be inducted into the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame
Former Moose Jaw Warrior and Olympic Champion Ryan Smyth is being recognized as one of Alberta’s greatest hockey contributors.
The longtime power forward will be inducted into the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame at the 2025 induction gala on July 19 in Red Deer.
Smyth, from Banff, Alta., played parts of four seasons with the Warriors beginning in the 1991-92 season.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound winger tallied 110 goals and 114 assists for 224 points in 188 regular-season games, highlighted by a team-leading 105-point (50G-55A) campaign in 1993-94.
He was named to the WHL East Division Second All-Star Team the following season and later returned to Moose Jaw to see his number 28 retired by the Warriors.
Smyth went on to a 19-season NHL career after being drafted by the Edmonton Oilers with the sixth-overall pick in the 1994 NHL Draft- 15 of those seasons came in Edmonton, with a brief sojourn with the New York Islanders, Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings in the middle.
Notably, he was an alternate captain for Edmonton, New York and Colorado, while battling at netfronts across the league to score 386 goals and 456 assists for 842 points in 1,270 regular-season games.
Smyth ranks second in all-time games played by an Oiler, second in powerplay goals (126), seventh in goals (296), and ninth in assists (335) and points (631).
The man nicknamed ‘Captain Canada’ dominated on the international stage, winning gold at the 1995 IIHF World Junior Championship, the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, the 2003 and 2004 IIHF World Championship, the 2004 World Cup and the 2012 Spengler Cup.
He was named a member of the Order of Hockey in Canada in 2018 and the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame in 2020.
Smyth will officially join the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame at a gala on July 19 at the Gary W. Harris Centre on July 19, along with Joe Nieuwendyk, Cliff Fletcher, Carla McLeod, Howie Draper, Garry Unger and the 1995 Calgary Canucks.
