Six WHL Alumni capture bronze with Canada’s 2019 FISU Winter Universiade Team
Six Western Hockey League Alumni including three forwards, one defenceman, one goaltender and one coach represented Team Canada at the 2019 FISU Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk, Russia from March 2-12, 2019.
Nick Chyzowski (Kamloops Blazers), Tyler King (Spokane Chiefs, Kootenay ICE), Nicholas Zajac (Saskatoon Blades, Lethbridge Hurricanes and Seattle Thunderbirds), Adam Henry (Saskatoon Blades and Portland Winterhawks), Dawson MacAuley (Medicine Hat Tigers and Regina Pats) and coach Mike Sirant (Calgary Wranglers) joined Canada in their quest to prove themselves leaders on the international stage in the student-athlete hockey world. All WHL Alumni players competing in this event have taken advantage of their WHL Scholarship to attain their post-secondary education and make them eligible participants for the 2019 FISU Winter Universiade.
Seeded in pool B, Canada went 4-1-0-0 after winning against Great Britain, Latvia, Switzerland, Sweden, but losing to Kazakhstan. After the preliminary round, Chyzowski led the WHL Alumni in scoring with six points (3G-3A) and Henry and Zajac tied each other with three points (3A) each. MacAuley also finished the preliminary round with one shutout after beating Great Britain 12-0 and King recorded one assist in the tournament when playing Sweden.
After losing to Kazakhstan 4-3 in the preliminary round, Canada faced Russia in the playoff semifinals of the tournament and fell 5-1. During this game, Chyzowski recorded one assist on the lone goal scored to finish his tournament tally at seven points (3G-4A), placing him in a tie for 13th place overall among competing skaters. MacAuley also finished the tournament in fourth-place overall among goaltenders after playing in two games, recording a 0.50 goals-against average and stopping 21 of 22 shots for a .955 save percentage.
Playing in the bronze medal final, Canada defeated their previous rivals, Kazakhstan, 3-0 and captured bronze. This is Canada’s third bronze-medal finish in-a-row after earning third place in the FISU Winter Universiade in 2017 and 2015.
