Raiders prospect Meunier pots four points as Alberta launches into first at WHL Cup
Red Deer, Alta. – With first place on the line, it was Team Alberta that came out firing Friday evening at the 2023 WHL Cup presented by FPS Payment.
Thanks to a four-point (2G-2A) performance from Ty Meunier (Prince Albert Raiders / St. Albert, Alta.), Team Alberta skated to a decisive 8-1 victory over Team B.C., and claimed first place following round-robin play.

Ben Macbeath (Kelowna Rockets / Calgary, Alta.) opened the scoring as Alberta carried a 1-0 advantage into the first intermission.
A six-goal explosion during the second period of play put Alberta in front for good.
Owen Folstrom (Kelowna Rockets / Calgary, Alta.), Brett Olson (Vancouver Giants / Spruce Grove, Alta.), Meunier, Patrick Sopiarz (Prince George Cougars / Edmonton, Alta.), Macbeath, and Sawyer Dingman (Swift Current Broncos / Edmonton, Alta.) all found the back of the net in the second period as Alberta surged to a 7-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Team B.C. was able to get on the scoresheet thanks to Liam Ruck (Medicine Hat Tigers / Osoyoos, B.C.), who recorded his fifth goal of the tournament.
Meunier finished off the scoring with his second goal of the game late in the third period.
Jordan Duguay (Portland Winterhawks / Edmonton, Alta.) finished the night with three assists while Cruz Pavao (Tri-City Americans / Calgary, Alta.) continued his strong tournament by collecting two assists of his own.
In net, Ryley Budd (Saskatoon Blades / Calgary, Alta.) made 24 saves for the win.
With the win, Team Alberta leapfrogged Team B.C. into first place in the round robin and will now take on Team Saskatchewan in the semifinal Saturday at 1 p.m. MT.
For Team B.C., the second-place finish means a semifinal matchup against Team Manitoba Saturday at 10:15 a.m. MT.
Round-robin action saw Saskatchewan edge Alberta in overtime by a 3-2 margin, while B.C. defeated Manitoba by a 7-2 tally.
