Graduating Broncos defenceman Mayo commits to Merrimack College

Swift Current Broncos defenceman Hunter Mayo has announced his commitment to Merrimack College.

The 20-year-old has completed his WHL eligibility after playing parts of five seasons in the league.

He’ll join the Merrimack Warriors for the 2025-26 season.

Mayo is coming off of a career-best year that saw him bag 19 goals and 30 assists for 59 points in 60 matches.

He led all Broncos defencemen in points and ranked sixth among all WHL rearguard in goals.

The Saskatoon, Sask. product was originally selected by the Red Deer Rebels in the second round of the 2019 WHL Prospects Draft and played parts of five seasons in Central Alberta before being acquired by the Broncos at the 2025 WHL Trade Deadline.

Mayo has piled up 50 goals (including 10 game-winners) and 93 assists for 143 points in 251 regular-season matches and was an alternate captain for Red Deer for two seasons.

Known for his keen offensive abilities, the 6-foot-1, 195-pound Mayo posted a career-best five points (2G-3A) versus the Regina Pats on March 15, 2025.

He also completed the rare defenceman hat trick with a trio of goals and an assist against the Saskatoon Blades in 2023-24.

Mayo also amassed 18 points (4G-14A) in 36 postseason matches and averaged a point per game (1G-4A) in Swift Current’s first-round series against the Eastern Conference-leading Medicine Hat Tigers.
