Former Wheat Kings Captain Hyland named WHL Grad of the Month for January
Edmonton, Alta.- Alberta Golden Bears rookie forward Brett Hyland has been named WHL Grad of the Month after a breakout start to his second Canada West semester.
The former Brandon Wheat Kings Captain erupted for four goals and 11 assists for 15 points in eight games. He’s also riding a nine-game point streak.
Hyland’s efforts helped the nationally ranked Golden Bears go 5-3-0 in January to stay in the battle for first place in the East Division. Alberta is tied with the University of Saskatchewan for first with 40 points each, though the Huskies own the tiebreaker with two games in hand.
The Edmonton, Alta. product sparked a Golden Bears comeback against Grant MacEwan University on January 4, potting Alberta’s first of five unanswered goals en route to a 5-2 victory. Hyland’s finest performance of the month came in a one-goal, two-assist effort in a 7-3 victory against the Calgary Dinos on January 10.

While he’s praised for his two-way play, Hyland has also established himself as a reliable scoring threat for the Golden Bears. The Edmonton, Alta. product has 12 goals and 18 assists for 30 points in 19 games. Hyland sits sits sixth in conference scoring and third on his team, while boasting a sparkling +20 rating. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound forward also leads all Canada West skaters with 1.58 points per game.
Hyland is in his first season with the Golden Bears after completing his WHL eligibility last spring. He was drafted by the Brandon Wheat Kings in the second round of the 2018 WHL Prospects Draft and went on to play parts of five seasons with the black and gold. He totaled 75 goals and 75 assists for 145 points over 195 regular season games, highlighted by a 32-goal campaign in 2023-24. He was drafted by the Washington Capitals in the seventh round of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. Hyland was named the 41st Captain in Wheat Kings history in February 2024 after inheriting the ‘C’ from Detroit Red Wings prospect Nate Danielson.
The 21-year-old is now utilizing his WHL Scholarship to study business at the University of Alberta.
For each season played in the WHL, a player is awarded a one-year post-secondary scholarship, which includes tuition, compulsory fees, and required textbooks.
In partnership with Canada West universities, numerous WHL Scholarship recipients each year are also awarded additional financial assistance from their university to receive Western Canada’s Premier Hockey Scholarship.
The WHL has awarded nearly 8,000 scholarships to graduate players since 1993.
