Dinos captain Kydd honoured as Canada West WHL Grad of the Month for October
Calgary, Alta.- Calgary’s Captain Adam Kydd is steering his team through unfamiliar waters and making waves across the Canada West.
The 23-year-old has snagged CW WHL Grad of the Month honours after potting four goals and 13 assists for 17 points in nine games.
This marks the most points by any CW player in a single month since February 2023, when fellow Rockets alumnus Liam Kindree scored 17 points for the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds.
“I think just kind of gaining some confidence,” Kydd said of his hot start. “I’ve been in the league for a couple of years now and just starting to really find that chemistry with my teammates. (I’m) feeling good right now, seeing the ice well, and I’ve been able to help contribute some offence.”
THANK YOU CAPTAIN! 🫡

The 6-foot, 185-pound forward registered five multipoint games in October, highlighted by a one-goal, three-assist effort in a 9-2 victory over the University of Regina on October 4.
“Adam has had a terrific start to the season and has been our leader on the ice,” Dinos Head Coach and WHL alumnus Mark Howell said. “He has been great on both ends of the ice, which shows with his offensive production as well as his strong plus/minus at +7.”
Beyond personal success, Kydd has also led the Dinos to a conference-leading 8-2 record- despite significant roster turnover in the offseason.
“I’ve definitely had to rely on the veteran players that we have to kind of help guide everyone,” Kydd added. “It’s been a lot of learning for all the new guys. They’ve all been super open and respectful to the leaders, so it’s been easy for us to kind of help guide them.”
The Regina, Sask. product is in his third season with U Calgary after a four-season career that saw him leave a lasting impact in Calgary and Kelowna.
Kydd played parts of three seasons with the Hitmen before joining the Rockets in the midst of the 2021-22 season.
His final year saw him score 20 goals and 33 assists for 53 points in 50 games in the Okanagan while beginning his university studies.
Now, Kydd is set to receive his degree from the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business a year early, thanks to his diligent studies.
He was also named an Academic All-Canadian for the 2023-24 season.
Kydd hopes to pursue professional hockey opportunities before putting his degree to use- but remains focused on helping the Dinos claim their first Canada West Championship since 2023.
“It would mean so much,” Kydd said of a potential deep playoff run. “I came in after the Dinos won Canada West, and then my first year, we did well. We lost in the finals, but got to go to nationals, and that was really cool. Last year, we kind of had the injury bug, so it was a bit of a disappointing season. So this year, there’s really nothing to lose.”
Calgary (8-2-0-0) returns to action on Friday, November 7, to host the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (6-2).
For each season played in the WHL, a player is awarded a one-year post-secondary scholarship, which includes tuition, compulsory fees, and required textbooks.
In partnership with Canada West universities, numerous WHL Scholarship recipients each year are also awarded additional financial assistance from their university to receive Western Canada’s premier hockey scholarship.
Since 1993, the WHL has awarded nearly 8,000 scholarships to graduate players. The WHL is the leading supplier of hockey scholarships in Western Canada and offers one of the most comprehensive scholarships in North America.
