2022 WHL Trade Deadline: Live Blog
The 2022 Western Hockey League Trade Deadline arrives Monday, January 17 at 3 p.m. MT, and there is no shortage of intrigue as teams look to load up in search of a run at the Ed Chynoweth Cup or, on the contrary, hope to restock the cupboards in order to speed up a rebuild.

11:30 a.m. MT – The Moose Jaw Warriors have acquired forward Cordel Larson from the Spokane Chiefs in exchange for forward Cade Hayes and a third-round pick in the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft. Larson, who hails from Weyburn, Sask., has recorded 17 points (5G-12A) in 30 outings with the Chiefs this season. Hayes, 19, is a product of Eatonia, Sask., and has set a career best during the 2021-22 campaign with 19 points (4G-15A) through 35 games played. – COMPLETE STORY
12 p.m. MT – The Kamloops Blazers have acquired 19-year-old forward Drew Englot from the Regina Pats in exchange for 17-year-old forward Tye Spencer. Englot, who hails from Candiac, Sask., has tallied 16 points (6G-10A) in 32 games this season with the Pats. Spencer, from Saskatoon, Sask., has accrued 11 points (3G-8A) in 32 games with the Blazers. – COMPLETE STORY
1:30 p.m. MT – The Kamloops Blazers have traded Minnesota Wild prospect Josh Pillar to the Saskatoon Blades in exchange for a conditional 2022 third-round pick and a conditional 2024 second-round pick in the WHL Prospects Draft. Pillar, who is from Warman, Sask., is currently at home recovering from a private medical situation. The Kamloops Blazers, in conjunction with the Saskatoon Blades and Pillar’s family, agree that the best place for his recovery is in his hometown. – COMPLETE STORY
2 p.m. MT – The Kamloops Blazers have acquired 20-year-old forward Luke Toporowski from the Spokane Chiefs in exchange for 20-year-old forward Nick McCarry and a second-round pick in the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft. Toporowski, who attended development camp with the Detroit Red Wings this past fall, joins the Blazers having spent parts of five seasons in Spokane. He departs the Chiefs having led the team in goals this season with 15. The product of Bettendorf, Iowa has played 223 career WHL games, all with the Spokane Chiefs, accumulating a total of 165 points (76G-89A).
McCarry was listed by the Blazers in the June of 2021. In 34 games this season, he contributed with 28 points (7G-21A). In 138 career WHL games with Medicine Hat and Kamloops, the product of Calgary, Alta. has totalled 69 points (30G-39A). – COMPLETE STORY
2:30 p.m. MT – The Lethbridge Hurricanes Hockey Club announced on Monday they have acquired forward Corson Hopwo from the Medicine Hat Tigers in exchange for forward Logan Barlage and a fourth-round selection in the 2022 Western Hockey League Prospects Draft.
Hopwo, 20, joins the Hurricanes having totalled 16 points (8G-8A) with Medicine Hat this season. The product of Duncan, B.C. was originally selected in the seventh round of the 2016 WHL Draft by the Tigers. The forward has racked up 96 career points (43G-53A) in 170 career games with Medicine Hat.
Barlage, 20, was the fourth overall selection in the 2016 WHL Draft by the Swift Current Broncos He was acquired by the Hurricanes in 2018 from the Swift Current Broncos. The product of Humboldt, Sask. has skated in 31 games this season totaling 17 points (7G-10A). – COMPLETE STORY
3:45 p.m. MT – The Regina Pats have traded defenceman Tom Cadieux to the Vancouver Giants in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft and a fifth-round pick in the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft. Cadieux, 19, is a veteran of 143 career WHL games, during which he has recorded 24 points (3G-21A). The Saskatoon, Sask. product was acquired by the Pats from the Tri-City Americans in October of 2020, and has tallied 14 points in 47 games as a Pat. – COMPLETE STORY
4 p.m. MT – The Winnipeg ICE has acquired forward Chase Wheatcroft and a fifth-round selection in the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for forward Brayden Edwards, a second-round pick in 2025 and a fourth-round selection in 2023.
Wheatcroft joins the ICE having totalled 17 points (4G-13A) in 22 games with the Hurricanes this season. The product of Calgary, Alta. has registered 61 career points (19G-42A) in 104 career WHL games, all with Lethbridge.
Edwards was originally a selected by the ICE in the sixth round of the 2019 WHL Draft by the ICE. The product of Abbotsford, B.C. has notched three assists in 11 games this season with Winnipeg. – COMPLETE STORY
4:05 p.m. MT – The Winnipeg ICE has acquired defenceman Tanner Brown from the Vancouver Giants in exchange for a first-round draft pick in the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft. Originally selected by the Giants with the 24th overall pick in the 2017 WHL Draft, Brown heads to Winnipeg after appearing in 127 career games over the course of the past four seasons with Vancouver. The product of Kelowna, B.C. has tallied 29 total points (6G-23A) during his WHL career, 14 of which have come during the 2021-22 WHL season.
4:15 p.m. MT – The Edmonton Oil Kings have acquired Florida Panthers prospect Justin Sourdif from the Vancouver Giants in exchange for forward Jacob Boucher and first-round selections in the 2022 and 2025 WHL Prospects Drafts. Originally selected third overall by the Vancouver Giants in the 2017 WHL Draft, Sourdif joins the Oil Kings after producing 166 points (69G-97A) in a Vancouver uniform. He was also a member of the Giants side that won the Western Conference Championship in 2019. – COMPLETE STORY
