McLaughlin, Wilfley, Gustafson selected in 2026 NHL Draft

Buffalo, N.Y. – The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club is proud to congratulate Will McLaughlin, Luke Wilfley and Jake Gustafson on being drafted today at the 2026 NHL Draft. The trio becomes the 152nd, 153rd, and 154th Winterhawks to be selected in the NHL Draft. "This is an exciting day for a lot of players around the world, and we want to congratulate Will, Luke, and Jake,” Winterhawks President and General Manager Mike Johnston said. “To get drafted to the NHL is a tremendous accomplishment. I believe we have three or four draft-eligible players that teams will be considering for training camp.” McLaughlin, of Canmore, Alberta heard his name called first, becoming the third Portland skater to be drafted by the Vegas Golden Knights, joining Alex Weiermair, and Cody Glass. McLaughlin was selected with the 159th overall pick in the fifth round. Portland selected McLaughlin in the fifth round of the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft; he joined the team at the start of the 2025-26 campaign. In his first WHL season, McLaughlin played in all 68 games, scoring nine goals and 21 assists for 30 total points. By season's end, he was tied for the team lead in defenseman points. McLaughlin's 6-foot-2, 168-pound frame gifts him with a long reach and strong speed on the ice. As the season progressed, he increased his draft stock with an increased role on the power play, showcasing a poised demeanor. NHL Central Scouting Recognized McLaughlin as the No. 54 skater in North America. Luke Wilfley was taken 172nd overall in round six by the New Jersey Devils. Out of Englewood, Colorado, Wilfley is the third Hawk taken by the Devils/Colorado Rockies franchise. In his first full season with the Winterhawks, Wilfley combined both size and speed to command the ice. Standing at 6-foot-1, 179-pounds, Wilfley ripped home nine goals and six assists for 15 points across 66 games. Portland eyed Wilfley's talent years ago, and selected him with a second round pick in the 2023 U.S. Priority Draft. Two picks later, the San Jose Sharks made Jake Gustafson the third Winterhawk player selected with the 174th overall pick in the sixth round. Gustafson, from San Jose, California, is the fourth Winterhawk selected by the Sharks in their franchise history, joining recent Portland standout Luca Cagnoni. The 6-foot-4, 182-pound forward played in all 68 regular season games in his rookie campaign, scoring 13 goals and 12 assists for 25 points. Gustafson's stature and production on ice got him recognized as the No. 52 skater in North America by NHL Central Scouting. Winterhawks announce 2026 preseason schedule

Portland, Ore. – The Portland Winterhawks, in conjunction with the Western Hockey League, today announced their 2026 preseason schedule. The team’s five matchups are as follows:

Sunday, August 30 vs. Tri-City – 2:00 p.m.
Friday, September 4 vs. Spokane (in Everett, Wash.) – 3:30 p.m.
Saturday, September 5 @ Everett – 6:00 p.m.
Friday, September 11 vs. Spokane (in Kennewick, Wash.) – 7:00 p.m.
Saturday, September 12 vs. Seattle (in Kennewick, Wash.) – 2:00 p.m.

Ticket and additional information for the Winterhawks home preseason game will be announced later this summer. Away game tickets will be available through the host teams: Everett Silvertips (September 4 & 5) and Tri-City Americans (September 11 & 12).

Winterhawks Acquire WHL Playing Rights of Mason West

Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club announced today the acquisition of Mason West's WHL Playing Rights from the Vancouver Giants in exchange for a conditional 2028 WHL Prospects Draft First-Round pick and a 2030 WHL Prospects Draft Seventh-Round pick. West, of Edina, Minnesota, spent the 2025-26 season with the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League. In 38 games, the 18-year-old forward buried 10 goals and added 15 assists for 25 points. West was selected 29th overall in the first round of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks. Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 218 pounds, West collected 114 points in 91 games played at Edina High School – with 51 goals and 63 assists. West was a member of the Edina Hornets team that won the 2024 Minnesota High School Class AA State Championship in front of 20,346 fans. Welcome to the Rose City Mason!

Portland Signs Avery Laliberte to WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement

Portland, Ore. – The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club announced today the signing of defenseman Avery Laliberte to a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement. Laliberte, born 2006, joins Portland after a season with the Waterloo Black Hawks of the USHL. In 62 games during the 2025-26 season, the Lorette, Manitoba native scored three goals and seven assists for ten points. Before his time in the USHL, Laliberte played for the Niverville Nighthawks of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League for two seasons, where he played in 106 games. The 6-foot-2, 196-pound blueliner also won a bronze medal with Team Canada West at the 2024 World Junior-A Challenge in Alberta. Welcome to the Rose City, Avery!

Alex Weiermair named CHL Academic Player of the Year

Portland, Ore. – The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club is proud to announce that the Canadian Hockey League has named Alex Weiermair as the winner of this year’s CHL Scholastic Player of the Year. This award is presented annually to a Canadian Hockey League player who is best able to combine success on the ice with success in the classroom. Weiermair earned the honor after excelling academically while enjoying a standout overage season on the ice. The 21-year-old from Los Angeles, Calif., maintained a 4.0 GPA across challenging university coursework, including chemistry, business, history, and psychology. His academic background also includes advanced-level calculus and physics, while away from formal coursework, Weiermair speaks German and is teaching himself Italian. On the ice, the Vegas Golden Knights prospect recorded 93 points, including 37 goals and 56 assists, in 66 regular-season games. He led the Winterhawks in scoring and finished fifth overall in the WHL while contributing consistently in all situations. Despite playing a heavy-minute role, Weiermair recorded just 28 penalty minutes and was also named a finalist for the Brad Hornung Memorial Trophy as the WHL’s Most Sportsmanlike Player. An alternate captain in Portland, Weiermair was recognized throughout the organization for his maturity, humility, integrity, and leadership both on and off the ice. With the honor, Weiermair becomes the second Portland Winterhawks player to be named CHL Scholastic Player of the Year, joining Dan Hulak, who captured the award following the 2000-01 season. Weiermair was also named the Western Hockey League Scholastic Player of the Year.

Winterhawk Alumnus Seth Jarvis wins the Stanley Cup

Portland, Ore. – The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club is proud to announce that alumnus Seth Jarvis won the Stanley Cup Sunday night, as his Carolina Hurricanes bested the Vegas Golden Knights in six games. Jarvis becomes the 13th former Winterhawks to have his name etched on the Cup. Jarvis, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, played in Portland from 2017 to 2021. In 154 games for the Hawks, Jarvis tallied 73 goals, 93 assists, and 166 points. The former Portland alternate captain was drafted by Carolina 13th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft and made his NHL debut at the start of the 2021-22 campaign. Since then, he has been a staple in Raleigh. Jarvis torched his way through the 2025-26 NHL regular season, scoring 32 goals and 34 assists for 66 points in 71 games. In 19 playoff games, he added four more goals and seven helpers for 11 points. His most memorable goal of the postseason came in Game Two of the Finals, when he blasted the overtime game winner to level the series 1-1. Earlier this year, Jarvis became one of seven former Winterhawks to suit up for his home nation at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy. A member of Team Canada, Jarvis took home silver on the world stage. Just four months later, ‘Jarvy’ was once again at center stage with his Hurricanes, winning their second Cup in franchise history. As Jarvis lofted the 34.5-pound silver memorial to hockey immortality above his head, he joined the likes of Seth Jones, Andrew Ference, and Mike Vernon as Portland alumni-turned-NHL Champions. Jarvis became the sixth player in NHL history to capture the Stanley Cup in the same season he earned a silver medal with NHL player participation at the Olympics. Winterhawks Acquire First Round Import Pick, along with three WHL Prospect Draft Picks

Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club announced today the acquisition of a 2027 First-Round CHL Import Draft pick, as well as a 2028 Second-Round, a 2027 Fifth-Round, and a 2028 Sixth-Round pick in the WHL Prospects Draft from the Moose Jaw Warriors in exchange for defenseman Griffin Darby. Moose Jaw’s 2028 second-round pick originally belonged to the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Darby, born in 2008, joins Moose Jaw after two seasons in Portland. The Swift Current, Saskatchewan, native played in 110 games, scoring two goals and recording 18 assists for 20 points. The Winterhawks organization would like to thank Griffin for his time in the Rose City, as we wish him all the best with the Warriors.

Jake Gustafson set to participate in 2026 NHL Draft Combine

The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club is proud to recognize Jake Gustafson for attending the 2026 NHL Draft Combine in Buffalo. The 2008-born forward from San Jose, California, is one of 90 top-ranked draft-eligible players set to participate in events over the next several days. In Gustafson’s first season with the Winterhawks, he appeared in all 68 regular season-games and four playoff games, while registering 13 goals, 12 assists, and 25 points. He scored his first WHL goal on October 4 and netted a hat trick on November 21. The first round of the 2026 NHL Draft will be held at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, with the first round beginning at 4 p.m. PT and Rounds 2-7 on June 27 at 8 a.m. PT. Gustafson is one of six 2025-26 Winterhawks players to be named to NHL Central Scouting's Final Rankings. Winterhawks Sign Cullen Stephenson to Scholarship and Development Agreement

Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club announced today the signing of forward Cullen Stephenson to a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement. Stephenson, of Warman, Saskatchewan, was selected with the 10th overall pick in the first round of the 2026 WHL Prospects Draft. With his selection, Stephenson became the highest Winterhawks draft pick since 2009. “We are thrilled to welcome Cullen Stephenson to Portland,” Winterhawks President and General Manager Mike Johnston said. “Cullen is a leader on and off the ice. He is a highly-skilled player who we feel has the potential to be an impact player in this league.” In 25 games with the Warman Wildcats U15 AA team, the 2011-born skater tallied an immense 88 points from 38 goals and 50 assists. The forward also suited up for the Moose Jaw Warriors U18 AAA side for two games – scoring twice and assisting once. "Matt Davidson was the one who said that he has a lot of similarities to Nate Danielson," Head Saskatchewan Scout Darwin Bennett said. "Sven [Bärtschi] watched some tape and compared him to former teammate Ryan Johansen, so I think he's that type of player for sure. He makes other players better, and he’s got a high compete…a real solid team player.” Playing in the WHL runs in the Stephenson family; Cullen’s father, Shay, won an Ed Chynoweth Cup and Memorial Cup as a member of the 2001 Red Deer Rebels. Winterhawks Sign Stevie Grumley to WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement

Portland, Ore. – The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club today announced the signing of defenseman Stevie Grumley to a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement. Grumley, a 2007-born blueliner, joins Portland after two seasons with the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the BCHL (British Columbia Hockey League). In 88 regular-season games, Grumley tallied 18 goals and 45 assists for 63 points. The Manhattan Beach, California, native has also played in 12 playoff games this season, piling on two goals and five assists. A dynamic and attacking-minded player, Grumley tallied the eighth most points among BCHL defensemen with 41 during the 2025-26 season. He was also in a three-way tie for the league lead for defensemen goals with 17. Grumley was named a BCHL All-Star this season. "We are excited to add Stevie to our group for next year. He was one of the top transition defensemen in the BCHL last year," Winterhawks President and General Manager Mike Johnston said. Before his time in the BCHL, Grumley played in the Los Angeles Jr. Kings system between his 13U and 16U seasons. Grumley won a USA Hockey 15U Tier I national championship with the Jr. Kings during the 2022-23 season. The 5'8", 150-pound defenseman was originally drafted by the Regina Pats in the second round of the 2022 U.S. Prospect Draft, 42nd overall. Grumley, the team captain for Sherwood Park during the 2025-26 season, will help bolster an already strong defensive core in Portland.
