Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club is excited to announce today the hiring of associate coach Ryan Donald ahead of the 2026-27 season.

“I’m excited to join a prestigious organization in the Western Hockey League and a place that is well-known for developing players both on and off the ice as quality human beings. The opportunity to join a great staff with great people in a good community is exciting for me,” Donald said. “I’ve spent over a decade coaching since I got out of the playing side. It is a chance to grow as a coach, ultimately pass on my knowledge and experience to our players, and help them at this stage of their journey.”

Donald comes to the Winterhawks after spending the previous six seasons as the general manager and head coach of the Cranbrook Bucks in the BCHL (British Columbia Hockey League). This past season, he led his team to the conference finals. He was named the BCHL coach of the year after the 2022-23 season.

Prior to his time in Cranbrook, Donald served as an assistant coach at Yale University, where he also played four years and won an ECAC championship. He played three years of pro hockey, which included a Kelly Cup Championship with the Florida Everblades.

The Winterhawks open their 2026-27 season in Everett on Saturday, September 19, before hosting the Kamloops Blazers at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, September 26, in their home opener.

SCHEDULE BREAKDOWN:

The WHL’s scheduling format will see the Winterhawks play all 22 league opponents.

This season, Portland will have two extended road trips. First, the Winterhawks will play six games away from the VMC starting on October 12 and ending on October 24, as they face the Blazers, Penticton Vees, Kelowna Rockets (twice), and Spokane Chiefs (twice). Then, a month later, Portland will embark on its eastern swing against the six East Division clubs on the road from November 11 to November 21.

Portland will face its biggest rival, the Seattle Thunderbirds, in eight matchups (four home and four away) in 2026-27, the most of any opponent. The rivalry renews on December 13 at the VMC.

The 2026-27 schedule has been extended by one week compared to previous seasons. As a result, the number of games being played in a short timeframe has been reduced. This season, there are six weekends with back-to-back home games, five sets of three games in three nights (eight last year), and no stretches of four games in five days (four occurred in 2025-26).

Portland's longest homestand of the year is five games from October 28 to November 7. After starting the season on the road, the Winterhawks play their next four games back in the Rose City from September 26 to October 9. Another four straight games will be played at home in December, but with the holiday break in between. From January 13 to January 18, Portland has three straight home games.

To conclude the regular season, Portland will have a home-and-home series against Seattle on March 26 and 27.

Portland, Ore. – The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club added to its roster on Tuesday morning when it selected Max Melicherik with the 30th overall pick in the first round of the 2026 CHL Import Draft.

Melicherik, of Trencin, Slovakia, joins the Hawks after a season with the Tappara (FIN) U18 squad. In 43 games played he scored 29 goals and added 26 assists for 55 points. The 2010-born forward joined the Slovakia U18 team on a silver-medal run at the 2026 IIHF U18 World Championship. He made a mark by being the youngest player at the tournament.

Melicherik also represented his nation at the U16 and U17 levels.

Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 182 pounds, Melicherik becomes the eighth Slovak selected by the Winterhawks, joining the likes of Marián Hossa. He is the first Slovakian selected by Portland in the Import Draft since 2003.

The Winterhawks traded their second round import pick to the Swift Current Broncos in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2026 WHL Prospects Draft. That pick became Nathan Johnson earlier this year. Portland did not make a selection in the third round of the 2026 CHL Import Draft, on account of Max Pšenička and Ondřej Štěbeták returning for the 2026-27 season.

Portland, Ore. – Six members of the 2025-26 Winterhawks roster and one recent alumnus, have earned invitations to NHL development camps, which are set to begin soon.

Former captain Kyle Chyzowski will join the Dallas Stars for their training camp in Texas. The 2004-born forward played 273 games for the Winterhawks over five seasons, tallying 231 points. Chyzowski led the Hawks to back-to-back Western Conference Finals in 2024 and 2025.

Alex Weiermair, a 2025 sixth-round selection by the Vegas Golden Knights will once again join the team for their camp. Weiermair recently concluded his junior career with Portland after a 93-point campaign. He signed his entry-level contract with Vegas earlier this year.

Another 2025 draft pick, Max Pšenička, hits the ice with the NHL's newest club, the Utah Mammoth. The Czech blueliner was selected in the second round of the 2025 NHL draft, 46th overall. He won a silver medal at the 2026 World Juniors Championship.

Draftees of the 2026 NHL Draft Will McLaughlin, Luke Wilfley, and Jake Gustafson will all make their training camp debuts with their respective teams.

Buffalo, N.Y. – The Portland Winterhawks Hockey Club is proud to congratulate Will McLaughlin, Luke Wilfley and Jake Gustafson on being drafted today at the 2026 NHL Draft.

The trio becomes the 152nd, 153rd, and 154th Winterhawks to be selected in the NHL Draft.

"This is an exciting day for a lot of players around the world, and we want to congratulate Will, Luke, and Jake,” Winterhawks President and General Manager Mike Johnston said. “To get drafted to the NHL is a tremendous accomplishment. I believe we have three or four draft-eligible players that teams will be considering for training camp.”

McLaughlin, of Canmore, Alberta heard his name called first, becoming the third Portland skater to be drafted by the Vegas Golden Knights, joining Alex Weiermair, and Cody Glass. McLaughlin was selected with the 159th overall pick in the fifth round.

Portland selected McLaughlin in the fifth round of the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft; he joined the team at the start of the 2025-26 campaign. In his first WHL season, McLaughlin played in all 68 games, scoring nine goals and 21 assists for 30 total points. By season's end, he was tied for the team lead in defenseman points.

McLaughlin's 6-foot-2, 168-pound frame gifts him with a long reach and strong speed on the ice. As the season progressed, he increased his draft stock with an increased role on the power play, showcasing a poised demeanor. NHL Central Scouting Recognized McLaughlin as the No. 54 skater in North America.

Luke Wilfley was taken 172nd overall in round six by the New Jersey Devils. Out of Englewood, Colorado, Wilfley is the third Hawk taken by the Devils/Colorado Rockies franchise.

In his first full season with the Winterhawks, Wilfley combined both size and speed to command the ice. Standing at 6-foot-1, 179-pounds, Wilfley ripped home nine goals and six assists for 15 points across 66 games.

Portland eyed Wilfley's talent years ago, and selected him with a second round pick in the 2023 U.S. Priority Draft.

Two picks later, the San Jose Sharks made Jake Gustafson the third Winterhawk player selected with the 174th overall pick in the sixth round.

Gustafson, from San Jose, California, is the fourth Winterhawk selected by the Sharks in their franchise history, joining recent Portland standout Luca Cagnoni.

The 6-foot-4, 182-pound forward played in all 68 regular season games in his rookie campaign, scoring 13 goals and 12 assists for 25 points. Gustafson's stature and production on ice got him recognized as the No. 52 skater in North America by NHL Central Scouting.

Congratulations to Will, Luke, and Jake for this incredible accomplishment!
