Winterhawks Weekly: Hawks build momentum in March
The Winterhawks returned to home ice after three weeks on the road and picked up three points to wrap up a three-in-three weekend set. After a tough loss in Everett on Friday, the Hawks bounced back with a strong effort in a 4-3 OT defeat to Tri-City on Saturday and another to top the Silvertips 3-1 in Sunday’s revenge game.
The highway beckons once more this week with two away games on tap for the weekend in Spokane and Tri-City.
Hot Hawks:
- Forward Gabe Klassen led all Winterhawks with four goals and one assist last weekend, finding twine in all three games. He leads the team in both goals (34) and points (64).
- Forward Marcus Nguyen chipped in a goal and an assist on Saturday, then helped set up Klassen’s opener in Sunday’s win over Everett. The Calgary, Alta. native has recorded points in four of his last six outings with two goals and three assists in that span.
- Forward Robbie Fromm-Delorme posted an assist on Saturday to snap a seven-game point-less drought, then netted the empty-netter on Sunday to record consecutive games with a point for the first time since Jan. 27 & 28.
- Defenseman Luca Cagnoni hit the scoresheet in each game last week, notching one assist Friday and two on Saturday before scoring the game-winning goal against Everett on Sunday.
Play of the Week:
Luca Cagnoni’s power-play bomb was a nice goal on its own, even before it led to a cathartic 3-1 win over the Everett Silvertips on Sunday. As the deciding tally that ended Portland’s skid, it’s even sweeter to watch the second time. Enjoy! ⤵️
Weekly Rewind:
Portland 3 at Everett 10 (Friday):
Two-point nights from Gabe Klassen (2G) and Ryan McCleary (1G, 1A) stood out in a night to forget for the Winterhawks as they fell 10-3 in Everett on Friday night.
Portland 3 vs Tri-City 4 OT (Saturday):
The Winterhawks found twine in all three periods but fell short in overtime as they dropped a 4-3 OT defeat to the Tri-City Americans on Saturday night.
Portland 3 vs Everett 1 (Sunday):
Luca Cagnoni ripped home a game-winning one-timer late in the second period to help the Winterhawks snap a nine-game winless skid with a 3-1 victory over the Everett Silvertips at the VMC on Sunday.
