The Story:
Marcus Nguyen tied the game with 38 seconds left before James Stefan and Kyle Chyzowski scored in the shootout as the Portland Winterhawks erased four different deficits to stun the Everett Silvertips in a 5-4 SO win on Friday night.
The Winterhawks have now won four straight games and sit atop the U.S. Division at 24-10-1-1 (50 pts) on the year.
Nguyen’s tally came shorthanded – his second of the night on the penalty kill – after a Ryder Thompson stretch pass found Kyle Chyzowski at the far blue line. Chyzowski shed a defender, then floated a pass to Nguyen in stride who rifled it past Tyler Palmer in one smooth motion to tie the game at four.
Everett opened the scoring at 6:16 on Julius Miettinen’s 14th of the campaign on the power play. Portland pushed back and earned an equalizer nine minutes later through Josh Davies. A Luca Cagnoni seam pass from the blue line found Gabe Klassen in the left circle, who deftly kicked the puck across the crease to the wide-open Davies.
Will Jamieson restored Everett’s advantage before the intermission, but Nguyen quickly evened things up once more with his first shorthanded breakaway strike just 2:53 into the second. The back-and-forth continued shortly after as Everett’s Hayden Smith and Portland’s Josh Zakreski traded goals. Zakreski’s 13th of the season came off of an impressive stretch pass from Tyson Jugnauth to Ryan Miller, who carried it into the zone before finding a trailing Zakreski for the tally.
Jesse Heslop’s late second-stanza strike had the Silvertips ahead through much of the third period, but Nguyen’s late heroics then sent the game to extras, where Portland grabbed the extra point.
Nick Avakyan finished with 28 saves on 32 shots and has earned each win of Portland’s current streak. Palmer turned aside 50 of 54 in the Silvertips’ loss.
The Winterhawks are back in action for Where’s Waldo Night at the VMC tomorrow. Puck drop is set for 6:00 P.M. as the Western Conference-leading Prince George Cougars come to town.
