Preseason recap: Hawks top T-Birds with third-period comeback
Everett, Wash. – Kyle McDonough, Josh Zakreski and Alex Thompson each scored as Portland picked up win #1 of the preseason with a 3-2 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds at Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett.
Each of the Winterhawks’ three goals came in the third period as they tied the game twice, then took the lead with just under five minutes to play. McDonough found twine 8:18 into the final frame to cancel out Coster Dunn’s second-period strike, but Nishaan Parmar quickly restored the T-Birds’ lead under a minute later. Zakreski picked up his second of the preseason five minutes later to tie things up, and Thompson grabbed the game-winner with a one-timer from the left circle 85 seconds later.
Winterhawks goaltender Justen Maric – acquired via trade from Moose Jaw on July 12 – posted 32 saves on 34 shots in a strong Portland debut. Forward Luke Myhre also skated in a Winterhawks sweater for the first time on Sunday, one of 12 rookies to hit the ice for Portland during the first two games of preseason.
