Where’s Waldo? At The VMC!
After a successful debut in 2022-23, Where’s Waldo Night is back in the VMC tonight! It was a blast seeing the VMC full of red-and-white-striped shirts and hats last season, and we can raise the bar even higher this go around.
Part of the Winterhawks’ “Keep Portland Weird” theme night series, Where’s Waldo Night aims to break the world record for “Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Waldo” – currently set at 4,626. Fans are encouraged to come dressed up as Waldo to be added to the counting tally of fans modeling the look of the famous elusive character.
It's the one night a year we make it easy to spot Waldo. 🤪

Second Chance
The Winterhawks and Cougars have sat together atop the Western Conference all season, but have met just once. Unfortunately, it was a forgettable contest for the Winterhawks as they suffered a rare home shutout on Dec. 3. Now, with bodies returning to the lineup and a little more swagger in their step, the Hawks are surely keen for another crack at the high-flying Cougars.
Both teams enter tonight’s contest on four-game winning streaks, and both played last night. Prince George survived a nailbiter in Kent, taking a 2-1 win over the Thunderbirds on the back of 38 saves by Ty Young. Meanwhile, Portland took a 5-4 shootout win over Everett after a thrilling 60+ minutes that saw the Hawks erase four separate deficits and force overtime with a Marcus Nguyen shorthanded goal in the final minute of regulation time.
Tonight’s contest features seven combined NHL draft picks and the league’s three highest-scoring skaters in Riley Heidt (70 pts), Zac Funk (69 pts) and Gabe Klassen (64 pts) – and that’s just scratching the surface of a dynamite matchup. Buckle up for another heavyweight bout in the VMC!
Comeback Kings
Even as injuries pile up and bounces go the wrong way, the Winterhawks have shown over the past week and change that there truly is no quit in this group. Last night’s win over Everett saw the team tie the game four separate times, including a last-minute shorthanded goal that you truly had to see to believe. Pair that with two goals and three saves in the shootout and Portland had its second remarkable comeback win since returning from the holiday break.
The first of those, of course, came back on Dec. 27 – the first game back after some time at home for the holidays – as Portland knocked off Tri-City 6-5 in overtime at Toyota Center in Kennewick. Similar to last night’s result, the Winterhawks had to claw back into that contest time and time again before scoring twice in the waning moments to force overtime, then netting the dagger early in the extra frame.
The regular season is always about building something special, brick by brick. You can’t win a championship in January, but you can build those habits with consistent effort and a steady focus on getting the little things right. They’d love to clean up the errors that forced them into each of these scenarios, but make no mistake, the Winterhawks are proving to themselves that they can win any game, no matter the score or the time.
