Thanks to a gargantuan 11-1 victory over the Kelowna Rockets at the VMC last night, the Winterhawks once again find themselves in first place in the Western Conference in both points (67) and point percentage (.713). Fifteen different Winterhawks scored at least a point last night, and nine recorded multiple points as Portland responded to a tough midweek result against the Rockets.
The Hawks now look for a second win over Seattle in the last six days, having dropped the T-Birds 4-1 on home ice back on Jan. 28. Tyson Jugnauth led the way in that tilt with three points, kickstarting what has been a stellar week for the former Wisconsin Badger, who recorded another goal and a helper last night.
Scouting Seattle
The Thunderbirds enter tonight’s tilt having found a bit more consistency than they had earlier in the year, winning three of their last five games including a 3-2 shootout decision over Victoria last night. Newcomer Nathan Pilling has two game-winning goals in January, while captain Jordan Gustafson has points in three straight games and six of eight since returning from injury. Likewise, Anaheim Ducks prospect Nico Myatovic has provided a jolt to Seattle’s offense with points in five straight outings.
The T-Birds sit last in the U.S. Division and 10th in the Western Conference, but the last playoff spot at #8 remains up for grabs as Seattle trails Spokane by just four points with a game in hand. Meanwhile, Portland remains in a tight tussle with Everett and Prince George for the top spot in the west. These traditional rivals may have their eyes on different prizes, but the desperation level should be there for both clubs as they each seek a second win in as many nights.
Firsts
Friday’s big win saw a pair of Winterhawks score their first goals of the campaign! Josh Mori ripped home a bar-down blast in the first period for the fourth of his career, and Kyle McDonough posted his first WHL goal in the second period as he finished off a Hudson Darby feed while cutting through the center lane to the net. Congrats, fellas!
