Black Hockey History Night
As part of our ongoing efforts to help ensure that hockey is for everyone, Black Hockey History Night is an opportunity for the Winterhawks family to recognize the impact of black athletes in the hockey community, both in Portland and around the hockey world! The team has partnered with local Black-owned apparel company Bproud to continue to grow the sport we love, and you can grab an exclusive game-night Bproud t-shirt in the team store tonight.
Tonight will also feature fundraising efforts through a number of other game-night activities, including those specialty t-shirt sales and signed Winterhawks memorabilia auction/sale items, with proceeds benefitting local Black-owned non-profits in our community like AAAH and BMIT. Click here to learn more about Black Hockey History Night!
PLUS – stick around after the game for a FREE postgame skate on the ice in the VMC! All skill levels are welcome, and free rental skates are available for those who need them. If you would like to bring your own skates, you must bring them in the building when you first enter AND blade covers/skate guards MUST BE ON AT ALL TIMES during the game.
Bird Battle
The I-5 Rivalry between Portland and Seattle never disappoints, but this year has been juiced up as both teams continue to dominate the Western Conference. The Winterhawks enter tonight with points in three straight games while the Thunderbirds hit the ice with back-to-back wins and victories in four of their last five.
Both teams added at the trade deadline, but the Hawks were dealt a tough blow when their addition, Chaz Lucius, was ruled out for the year following shoulder surgery earlier this week. At the same time, Seattle pushed its chips to the center of the table this season with several high-priced trade acquisitions to bolster its lineup. After the late addition of Arizona Coyotes prospect Dylan Guenther last weekend, a healthy T-Birds lineup could boast as many as 10 NHL-drafted players.
Still, despite the star power on the other side, Portland owns a 4-2-0-0 record against Seattle this season. Heading into another heavyweight clash tonight, look for the Hawks to once again lean on their depth and transition game to generate scoring chances while maintaining stout defensive zone structure.
