Last Time Out
The Winterhawks hosted the Vancouver Giants for the annual Les Schwab Teddy Bear Toss on Saturday night but came up short in a 5-2 contest. Diego Buttazzoni electrified the home crowd with a one-timer at 10:22 of the second period to ignite the Teddy Bear Toss, bringing thousands of stuffed animals raining onto the ice. Kyle McDonough added a late tally in the third but the Hawks couldn’t overcome Vancouver’s offense. The Giants sealed the win with an empty-netter in the final minutes of the game.
Special Teams Continue Sparking Success
The Winterhawks’ special teams have been a driving force behind their recent success. Portland ranks first in the WHL on the power play, converting at a stellar 28.9% clip, while their penalty kill has also been incredibly effective, operating at 80.4%. This balanced performance gives the Hawks an advantage in key moments, providing offensive firepower and defensive stability. With special teams often deciding close games, Portland will look to continue their efficiency tonight.
Jugnauth’s Offensive Jolt
Tyson Jugnauth is coming off a phenomenal seven-point weekend, including a staggering six-assist performance in one game. His effort earned him WHL Tempo Player of the Week honors and CHL’s First Star of the Night on Saturday. Jugnauth leads all WHL defenseman with 35 points, and leads the league in power-play assists with 19. The Seattle Kraken prospect is currently riding a three-game point streak, with an impressive nine assists over that stretch. With his vision, playmaking ability, and offensive consistency, Jugnauth continues to be a key contributor for the Winterhawks and one of the top offensive defensemen in the league.
Scouting the Silvertips
Everett enters tonight’s game with a 24-3-2 record, sitting at the top of the WHL standings. The Silvertips are 8-0-1-1 in their last 10 games and have not lost in regulation since November 8, making them one of the league’s hottest teams. Leading the way offensively is Carter Bear, who ranks fourth in the league with 46 points (24G, 22A). Just behind him, Tyler Mackenzie has 45 points (26G, 19A) and leads the team in goals.
In goal, Everett has split duties between Jesse Sanche and Alex Gabriel, with Sanche standing out as the league leader in save percentage (.915) and goals-against average (2.15). Recently, Raiden Legall, a newly signed NCAA-commit, has earned four starts, posting four wins, a shutout, and WHL Goaltender of the Week honors.
On special teams, the Silvertips rank fifth in the league on the power play at 26.6%, and eighth on the penalty kill at 80.4%. For Portland to come out on top tonight, they will need to limit penalties, capitalize on their own power-play chances, and find a way to break through against one of the league’s top goaltending tandems.
2024-25 Season Series
The Hawks face off against the Silvertips for the fourth time this season tonight. Portland looks to grab their first win of the 2024-25 campaign on the road in Everett.
