Camp Confidential: Q&A with Carter Sotheran
The 2024 Neely Cup Training Camp is officially underway from Sherwood, Ore. Throughout the week, we will feature various Q&As on Winterhawks.com. Next up, Philadelphia Flyers prospect, Carter Sotheran.
How was your summer and what were some of the highlights?
Carter Sotheran (CS): “My summer was really good. I went to Philly for a bit for camp and some additional workouts, so that was pretty fun.”
How was Philadelphia and what was it like participating in camp?
CS: “It felt good to be back. I was able to recover a little bit before going into it. It’s a good group and facility there, so it was fun.”
You also got to spend some time with Team Canada at World Juniors Summer Camp, how was it?
CS: “It was a good experience with all those guys, and Mike was there too, so it was a good time seeing everyone again and connecting with some new players.”
How does it feel to be back in Portland?
CS: “Good, yeah I’m excited to be back. It’s a good group of guys and a new staff, but I’m looking forward to this year.”
What are you looking forward to most this season?
CS: “Just stepping into a newer role, being a leader, and helping the younger guys.”
How does it feel being a part of the leadership group and helping out the younger players?
CS: “It’s good, I remember when I came in here as a younger guy, so I’m just trying to help the younger guys be comfortable and help them play their game.”
What is one thing you’re hoping to achieve both individually and as a team?
CS: “ As a team, our goal is to get to 40 wins, and individually, I just want to improve all of my skills.”
What skills did you focus on improving in the off-season?
CS: “Putting on weight. I spent a lot of time in the gym and on the ice, focusing on getting stronger.”
Overall, what was your favorite memory from your time in Portland so far?
CS: “Last year, winning the Western Conference Championship, that’s an easy one. The group of guys we had were great and it was a good time.”
What’s a message to the fans that can’t be here at Neely Cup?
CS: “I’m looking forward to seeing you. We have another really good group here, and we’re looking forward to getting started.”
