IN A NUTSHELL:
Wenatchee wraps up a three-in-three weekend with its heaviest test yet: the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy favorites.
THE SCENE-SETTER:
After falling behind 2-1 going to the final period Saturday against the Kelowna Rockets, the Wild ran away to a 6-2 victory, sealing a split in the season series. Zane Saab drove the net for the opening goal 5:07 into the game, but Rowan Guest’s toss from the left point was tipped in by Ryan Oothoudt with less than two minutes left in the period to tie it. Tij Iginla found Ty Halaburda out front for a goal 37 seconds into the second period, but Caelan Joudrey tied the contest 2:33 into the third. Sam Elliott put the Wild in front to stay at 6:06, and with 5:35 remaining, Mathias Silaban found Riley Bassen out front for a one-timer and a two-goal advantage. Wenatchee extended the lead two more times, as Aiden Grossklaus wired a shot to the top of the cage with 2:48 remaining, and Levi Benson found Drew Smith on the weak side for his first WHL goal 57 seconds later. Elliott led the way with a goal and two assists, and Josh Toll fed his teammates to the tune of three assists, while Tobias Tvrznik racked up 29 assists to earn his 16th win of the season. Both penalty-killing units went 2-for-2 in the game.
KNOW YOUR FOE:
The Everett Silvertips have won four in a row, after going to Seattle last night and holding off the Thunderbirds for a 3-2 overtime victory – Seattle led 1-0 going to the third period on the basis of Noah Kosick’s goal 7:13 into the game. Most of the scoring in the game would follow, as Julius Miettinen deposited the puck to tie the game 85 seconds into the third. Matej Pekar scored to untie the game 18 seconds later, but Carter Bear would find the next equalizer on the power play at 5:48. With 1:55 remaining in overtime, Miettinen scored again to deliver the Silvertips the win. Matias Vanhanen had assists on all three Everett goals, while Landon DuPont posted a pair of helpers. Everett out-shot their hosts 44-26, throwing 20 chances on the net in the second period alone. The Silvertips bring the league’s highest-paced offense, at over 42 shots on goal per game, and Anders Miller and Raiden LeGall make up the WHL’s most reliable goaltending duo, with two of the circuit’s top five averages in net. Though Vanhanen is the only scorer in the WHL’s top 15, four Silvertips come in with at least 60 points, and two more are knocking at the door. Everett arguably comes on stronger as the game goes on, with an 84-44 scoring margin in the third period and an 8-3 record in overtime and shootouts.
PLAYOFF PICTURE:
Wenatchee remains nine points back of a Western Conference playoff spot with nine games to play. Portland and Victoria are tied for seventh with 60 points apiece, with Kamloops four points ahead in sixth place, and Tri-City four points back of a playoff spot in ninth.
THE APPLE CAPITAL:
Josh Toll’s three points on Saturday gave him a commanding eight-point lead on Luka Shcherbyna in the race for the Wenatchee scoring title – Toll and Prince Albert defenseman Daxon Rudolph are the only WHL blueliners to lead their teams in scoring. Toll raced past the 40-assist plateau last night, and is approaching Reid Andresen’s team-best total of 44 assists from a year ago. Saturday was his fifth three-point game with the Wild, and fourth three-assist night.
ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL:
Wenatchee’s five-goal third period Saturday was its third five-goal stanza of the season, with both of the previous two coming in the second period. The last five-goal third period for the Wild came on March 8, 2024 in an 8-1 road rout of the Tri-City Americans,
TOBY TERRIFIC:
Tobias Tvrznik tallied his 16th win of the season on Saturday, putting him within one of the high-water mark for Wenatchee’s WHL era – Brendan Gee and Daniel Hauser both notched 17 wins during the 2023-24 Wild campaign, guiding the club to a fourth-place Western Conference finish. Gee led last year’s team with 11 victories.
