Brown Scores First WHL Goal Saturday as Silvertips Steal 2-1 Win in Wenatchee
GAME BOXSCORE
WENATCHEE, Wash. – Wenatchee’s 16-year-old newcomer from Milestone, Saskatchewan continues to add milestones to his early resume in the Western Hockey League. Last week, he stepped onto the ice for his first WHL game. Saturday night, his first WHL goal nearly led to his team’s first win of the season.
Riley Brown pounced on a rebound early in the second period to put the Wild in the lead, but the Everett Silvertips posted two goals of their own in the third to steal a 2-1 win at Town Toyota Center. Everett improved to 2-0-1-0 on the young season, while Wenatchee moved to 0-2-1-0 – all three games so far for both the Silvertips and the Wild have come down to the very last breath, with each team sending one of the three beyond the regulation 60 minutes.
The goaltenders stole the show in the first period, as Tobias Tvrznik denied all 11 Everett shots and Bennett Byers stopped the first nine shots he faced on WHL ice. 2:48 into the second period, Brown hammered home a rebound to Byers’s left, a second-chance opportunity off a shot down the slot from Jevin Morrison to give him his first goal and the Wild a 1-0 lead.
Everett pushed the pace in the third period, tying the game at the 3:40 mark on a wrist shot from Dario Blengino that crept over Tvrznik’s right shoulder. With 2:15 to go, Henry Meier swept in a shot from the right-wing circle after catching the rebound off a chance from Charlie Barnes. The Wild responded with a full-court press of their own, including several opportunities close to the net with the extra attacker, but were never able to come away with the tying goal.
Morrison’s assist was his first WHL point, and Tvrznik logged 44 saves in the loss. Byers earned the win for Everett in his WHL debut, stopping 27 Wenatchee shots. The penalty-killing units were flawless again, combining to go 7-for-7 on the night. The Wild won the faceoff battle 30-24, thanks in part to an outstanding showing from Caelan Joudrey, who won 12 of his 19 draws.
The Wild start a three-game road swing next weekend with back-to-back road tilts against the Seattle Thunderbirds and Everett Silvertips, before beginning a nine-game homestand at Town Toyota Center on October 10 against the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Friday’s opening puck drop at Accesso Showare Center is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
