Warriors stars Mateychuk & Yager named to 2024 Memorial Cup All-Star Team
Saginaw, Mich. – Moose Jaw Warriors stars Denton Mateychuk and Brayden Yager have been named to the 2024 Memorial Cup All-Star Team. The team was announced during Sunday’s Memorial Cup championship game between the OHL’s London Knights and Saginaw Spirit.
Mateychuk, a product of Dominion City, Man., who captained his squad to the first WHL Championship in Warriors franchise history, registered seven points (3G-4A) in four games during the 2024 Memorial Cup.
For Yager, a prospect of the Pittsburgh Penguins, he finished right behind Mateychuk, recording six points (3G-3A) in four games.
Despite being eliminated in the semifinal game, both Mateychuk and Yager were two of the most impactful players during the running of the 2024 Memorial Cup.
Mateychuk, a prospect of the Columbus Blue Jackets, started the tournament with a bang, tallying three points (1G-2A) in a nail-biting 5-4 loss to the host Spirit back on Friday, May 24. He followed up on Monday, May 27, with his second goal of the tournament in another heartbreaking 5-4 loss to the OHL champion London Knights. Mateychuk concluded the round-robin with another three-point effort (1G-2A), boosting the Warriors to the franchise’s first ever victory at the Memorial Cup – a 5-3 triumph over the QMJHL champion Drummondville Voltigeurs.
Yager, who hails from Saskatoon, Sask., got rolling early as well, notching three points (2G-1A), in the loss to Saginaw on May 24. After being held off the scoresheet May 27, Yager came up with a big game when the Warriors needed it most, collecting another three points (1G-2A), in Wednesday’s do-or-die 5-3 win over the Voltigeurs.
The 2024 Memorial Cup All-Star Team is comprised of players from the competing teams – the WHL champion Moose Jaw Warriors, OHL champion London Knights, QMJHL champion Drummondville Voltigeurs, and host Saginaw Spirit.
