[{"id":957,"date":"2026-06-11T09:14:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T16:14:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chl.ca\/whl-vees\/?p=957"},"modified":"2026-06-11T09:14:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T16:14:10","slug":"stone-ready-to-lead-the-vees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chl.ca\/whl-vees\/article\/stone-ready-to-lead-the-vees","title":{"rendered":"Stone Ready To Lead The Vees"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Following the departure of 20-year-old Nolan Stevenson, the Penticton Vees have appointed Callum Stone the second captain of the Vees WHL franchise.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stone enters his third season with the Vees in 2026-27 after being one of five players to make the jump with the organization from the BCHL to the WHL last year.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Vees defenceman says he was thrilled to find out he was going to wear the \u201cC\u201d for the team this season.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI was super excited,\u201d he said. \u201cI think it was five seasons ago practicing, when I first stepped onto the ice (as an affiliate player) with the team, to now being named captain. It has been a journey but I\u2019m super excited for what this year and the future holds.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stone led all Vees defencemen with a +7 rating in the playoffs and chipped in four assists in 12 games as Penticton made it to the Conference Championship Series before falling to the eventual WHL champions in the Everett Silvertips.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He talked about what it takes to be a leader of the Vees.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think it\u2019s just leading by example,\u201d said Stone. \u201cYou don\u2019t want to be a drill sergeant, but you also don\u2019t want to just be a cheerleader. You want someone that the team can watch day after day and realize that\u2019s the standard I hold myself to. I would never say something that I won\u2019t be willing to do myself and I truly believe that that\u2019s the best way to go about leading a team, just leading by example and being the most consistent person in that domain.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think letting the coaches coach and then letting me as a player be a support to every single person on the team is also a very important part to making sure we are a cohesive group.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Kelowna, BC native follows in the footsteps of Nolan Stevenson who was also a three-year member of the Vees and says there is a lot to take away from the former Vee as he steps into the role.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think Nolan Stevenson was an unbelievable role model,\u201d Stone said. \u201cFor me as a rookie in the BCHL and also last year, navigating us through that first year in the WHL. I think the biggest thing that Nolan was really good at is just understanding the ebbs-and-flows of a season. Having high moments and low moments but being neutral through it all. Not letting bad events maybe ruin some of the success you\u2019vehad.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think how he handled that in the WHL in our first season is something I want to bring to the organization next year.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Vees have announced one assistant captain for next year as AJ Reyelts will return between the pipes for his 20-year-old season. Although the Vees star goaltender won\u2019t physically wear an \u201cA\u201d, Stone is excited to have Reyelts by his side.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhen I heard AJ was returning, he\u2019s a player that automatically makes our team a contender for whatever championship you want to think about,\u201d Stone explained. \u201cHe\u2019s a great leader in the room. To have his support and to be able to communicate with him as a teammate, but more importantly as a friend, is something that is going to be really important next year.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stone and the Vees will begin their campaign in early September and he says he\u2019s just counting down the days.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019ve been counting the weeks since the season ended,\u201d he said. \u201cI think having the start we had in the WHL last year has really left me with a lot of excitement for what this season holds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIn all honesty, since watching the Memorial Cup in Kelowna, the biggest thing I\u2019ve been thinking about is, it may seem like a very ambitious and lofty goal but, I really want to head to Guelph (the host of the 2027 Memorial Cup) and compete for the Memorial Cup in 2027.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><br In return, the Vees have moved a 2029 4th round pick, a 2030 3rd round pick and their 1st round pick in the 2026 CHL Import Draft to the Victoria Royals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jones, a native of Winnipeg, MB, spent last season with the Fargo Force of the USHL racking up 26 goals and 26 assists in 61 games played, tacking on 10 points in nine playoff games this past season. He led the Force in goals and was second in points. Jones was a member of the Shattuck St. Mary\u2019s program from 2022-25 registering over 200 points while with the prep school.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cGraham is a dynamic forward that attacks the game offensively,\u201d said Vees president, head coach and general manager Fred Harbinson. \u201cHis creativity with the puck not only gives him opportunities to score, but also places his line mates in positions to do the same.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHis competitiveness to want to win ultimately is what drew us to make this deal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jones won a US 18U National Championship in 2025 with Shattuck St. Mary\u2019s where he collected 11 points in six games in the tournament. He registered 52 points in 27 games with Shakopee High in the Minnesota High School league in 2025-26 and also put up 22 points in 20 games in the UMHSEHL.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Shakopee, MN native was taken 12th overall in the USHL Draft in 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to add Nate to our organization,\u201d said Vees director of scouting Adam Sergerie. \u201cHe is a highly dynamic player who brings an impressive combination of skill, creativity, and hockey sense. His rush play is exceptional, driven by his separation speed. His puck control and edge work allow him to excel in small-area situations and create offense in tight conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEqually important is his awareness away from the puck, as he consistently finds open ice and positions himself as a scoring threat. He has a strong ability to capitalize on opportunities and make an impact offensively.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pederson stands at 5-FOOT-9 and 161 lbs. Tyden added nine points in 11 playoff games with the Capitals this season as his team made a push to the USHL conference final. He also played for Moorhead High in the USHS-MN league picking up 81 points in 31 games played.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tate Bergeson (2011-born) was the third-round pick of the Vees in this past WHL Prospects Draft. He played for MN Blue Ox 14U AAA this past season notching 15 goals and 15 assists in 18 games played.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhen we recruit a player we say we are recruiting a family and in this case we really are,\u201d said Vees head coach and general manager Fred Harbinson. \u201cOnce I got to know the Bergeson family it was evident that the entire family are winners through and through. Tyden leading his High School team to Back to Back State championships and then capped off by going to the USHL conference championship is an incredible achievement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhile Tyden adds talent to our current roster, his younger brother Tate will be a huge addition as we build our future. The Silvertips got a fortunate bounce to make the game 3-1 late and then played solid, lock-down defence the rest of the way adding an empty netter to make the final 4-1.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Game 2 saw the Vees battle back from three different one goal deficits with Ethan Weber tying the game 4-4 with 56 seconds to go to send it to overtime. It was the Silvertips who found the net on the powerplay in double OT to take the 5-4 win and 2-0 series lead. AJ Reyelts stopped 48-of-53 shots he faced in the loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Vees and Silvertips once again clashed in a tight battle in Game 3. Everett struck twice early in the third to take a 4-2 lead but Brady Birnie got the Vees within one with his team leading ninth goal of the post-season. Despite a handful of chances late, the Vees couldn\u2019t even the score for a second straight game and fell 4-3.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Vees Player to Watch: D Ethan Weber: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Weber<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">has scored in back-to-back games for the Vees in this series.
