*If necessary]]> Liam Ruck OT Winner Gives Tigers 2-1 Series Lead https://chl.ca/whl-tigers/article/liam-ruck-ot-winner-gives-tigers-2-1-series-lead Wed, 29 Apr 2026 04:28:17 +0000 Gino De Paoli https://chl.ca/whl-tigers/article/liam-ruck-ot-winner-gives-tigers-2-1-series-lead Medicine Hat, AB - The Tigers took on the Raiders for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Tuesday, April 28th in Co-op Place.   The start of Game 3 set the tone for the rest of the game as goaltending at both ends was hot from the start.   Michal Orsulak stopped all eight shots that came his way in the first period while Jordan Switzer turned away 13.   A pair of power play opportunities for the Tigers in the first period gave them some high-danger chances to take the lead, but Orsulak kept the Tigers at bay.   Daxon Rudolph was the only player that found the back of the net in the first period with his sixth of the playoffs at 15:33.   The second period was almost identical to the first but with a more favourable outcome for the Tabbies as they outscored the Raiders 1-0 in the middle frame.   Tensions grew high before anyone found the back of the net in the second as the physicality was turned up a notch.   As emotions rose the Tigers had another power play opportunity late in the second and Kade Stengrim made sure to cash in. A rocket of a wrist shot that came out of the net as fast as it went in tied the game at 1-1 at 15:33.   Prince Albert made a big push in the third to take back their lead but the outstanding play by Switzer kept them out of the back of the net.   Some solid defensive plays by the likes of Veeti Väisänen and other Tigers D-men kept the Raiders at bay despite their offensive momentum rising.   Captain Bryce Pickford took it upon himself to continue the physical tone from earlier in the game to keep the Raiders outside.   The teams remained tied at 1-1 after three periods of play and the 5200 fans in Co-op Place got to witness some free hockey as overtime came their way.   A stretch pass from Riley Steen led to a play that allowed Markus Ruck to set up Andrew Basha for a shot on goal from the high slot. Orsulak made the initial save but Liam Ruck put the game to rest as he put home the rebound for the overtime winner at 4:07. The Tigers won the game 2-1 and took a 2-1 series lead in the 2026 Eastern Conference FInals.   Switzer finished the game with 37 saves on 38 shots after an incredible performance in Game 3 immediately following his shutout in Game 2.   Special Teams:

They peppered Michal Orsulak with 16 shots in the opening frame to set the tone that the Tigers can not be counted out.   Many high-danger chances were generated by the offensive pressure created by the Tigers with the best coming from Markus Ruck early in the first with a five-hole that was denied by Orsulak.   After not receiving a power play in Game 1, the Tigers had back-to-back power play opportunities in the first period.   It took almost all 20 minutes of the first but the Tigers on their 16th shot finally found the back of the net with a deflection from Noah Davidson off of a shot from Jonas Woo just one second after their second power play expired at 19:54.   As if 16 shots in the first period was not crazy enough, the Tigers continued to push hard and top that total by posting 17 shots in the middle frame.   Orsulak and the Raiders defence had their work cut out for them and a few close calls that needed a closer look to see if the puck crossed the goal line.   The Tigers received another power play opportunity late in the second period and the Ruck twins capitalized. Markus took a feed from Bryce Pickford at the left wall and walked all the way through the top of the zone to the right side and fed his brother Liam Ruck out front. Liam sent a shot through Orsulak's five-hole to give the Tigers a two goal lead at 16:13 on the power play.   It was all Tigers through the first 40 minutes of play as they held a 2-0 lead going into the third period. Jordan Switzer's solid play on the back end snuffed out the few chances the Raiders did have in the first two frames.   Switzer's busiest period of the night came at the end of the game as Prince Albert pushed hard to get on the board. Despite PA posting 15 shots in the third, Medicine Hat's incredible special teams allowed them to escape some high-danger scenarios unscathed.   Markus Ruck had two breakaway chances in the third period and cashed in on the second one off of a chip pass from Carter Cunningham in the Tigers end gave Ruck a step on the defender. Ruck fired a wrist shot past Orsulak to make it 3-0 Tigers and silence the Art Hauser at 12:49.   Woo's empty net goal at 18:05 sealed the Raiders fate as the game was all but over at 18:05.   Before the game could end Niilopekka Muhonen tallied his first goal of the year, including the regular season, at 18:41. The top two seeds of the East sat only two points away from each other in the regular season and split the season series with two wins each.   All four previous matchups between the two clubs were physical and that tone was carried forward to the post-season. Both teams were throwing checks left and right including some bone-crushing collisions from Josh Van Mulligen and Niilopekka Muhonen.   The Raiders were the first on the board with a goal from Brayden Dube at 6:23.   The Tigers responded with a snipe from Markus Ruck at 15:37. Ruck picked up a stretch pass from Andrew Basha and gained a step on the Raiders defenceman. A rocket of a wrist shot tied the game 1-1.   Justice Christensen restored the Prince Albert lead just 1:40 later, and the Raiders were up by 1 at the first intermission.   The Tigers put up double-digit shots in the second period but could not find their way past Michal Orsulak for a while.   Prince Albert added two more tallies to their total with the first from Ben Harvey at 2:43 and the second from Max Heise on the power play at 13:53.   Shaeffer Gordon-Caroll scored the lone goal of the middle frame for the Tigers as he managed to tip a feed from Dayton Reschny over the shoulder of Orsulak despite being tied up in the slot.   The Raiders opened the third period with back-to-back power play goals from Aiden Oiring at 3:37 and Alisher Sarkenov at 6:46.   Despite the Tigers last minute efforts their deficit grew larger and they struggled to keep the game at even strength.   Off of a mid-ice interception Bryce Pickford fired an amazing wrist shot past Orsulak for his sixth goal of the playoffs to bring the Tigers within three at 8:01.   The Raiders offensive push added two more goals to their total at the end of the period from Aiden Oiring and Evan Smith to make for a final score of 8-3.   Special Teams:

The Tigers claimed the first two games of the season set, claiming 3-2 and 7-1 victories on November 29 and December 3, respectively. The Raiders secured the final two contests, beating Medicine Hat by scores of 8-5 and 5-1 on January 17 and January 24, respectively.   Jonas Woo, who was ranked 179th among North American skaters in NHL Central Scouting’s final rankings for the 2026 NHL Draft, the Tigers in scoring against the Raiders this regular season, tallying six points (3G-3A) in four games. Fellow 2026 NHL Draft eligible Markus Ruck, who is ranked 23rd among North American skaters, also registered six points (1G-5A) in four games.   San Jose Sharks prospect Max Heise recorded seven points (4G-3A) in four games for the Raiders, while Dallas Stars prospect Brandon Gorzynski played a season high seven games against the Medicine Hat – two as a member of the Raiders and five as a member of the Calgary Hitmen. The Medicine Hat Tigers have the most players ranked in the NHL Central Scouting's Final Draft Rankings out of any team in the NHL with eight current Tigers players named. The Prince Albert Raiders follow closely with seven players ranked by NHL Central Scouting. The Edmonton Oil Kings and Portland Winterhawks both boast six players, while the Calgary Hitmen, Prince George Cougars, and Vancouver Giants all have five players ranked by NHL Central Scouting.]]> Tigers Advance To Eastern Conference Championship After 5-2 Win Over Hitmen https://chl.ca/whl-tigers/article/tigers-advance-to-eastern-conference-championship-after-5-2-win-over-hitmen Thu, 16 Apr 2026 03:45:41 +0000 Gino De Paoli https://chl.ca/whl-tigers/article/tigers-advance-to-eastern-conference-championship-after-5-2-win-over-hitmen Calgary, AB - The Tigers took on the Hitmen for Game 4 of Round Two on Wednesday, April 15th in the Scotiabank Saddledome.   Medicine Hat had Calgary on the brink of elimination going into Game 4 as they carried a 3-0 series lead and were looking to complete the sweep with one more win to make their second consecutive Easter Conference Finals appearance.   Their effort to closing out the series was great out of the gate as the Tigers were the first on the board with Noah Davidson's fourth of the playoffs at 5:59. After Luke Cozens battled the puck to Davidson, he fired a laser of a wrist shot over Eric Tu's shoulder for a stunning goal to make it 1-0 Tigers.   Calgary pressed hard on Medicine Hat to get back in the game, posting 12 shots in the first period. They eventually responded with Blake Vanek's first goal of the playoffs at 9:49.   The Tigers took their game to another level in the middle frame, putting 14 shots on goal to Calgary's nine.   Veeti Väisänen restored the Tiger lead at 10:23 in the second period with an incredibly accurate wrist shot from the point off of a switch play with Bryce Pickford.   For the first time since 12:19 in the third period of Game 2, the Tigers were given a power play opportunity and they did not waste it. Jonas Woo one-timed home a smooth passing play from Liam and Markus Ruck to extend the Tigers lead to two.   In addition to dominating the second period on the scoresheet, the Tigers were dominating in the hits department as well with the likes of Davidson and Shaeffer Gordon-Carroll making their presence known to keep Calgary at bay.   With their season on the line the Hitmen pushed hard and tallied an early goal from Ethan Moore at 5:04 to bring themselves within one.   The Tigers pushed right back and Kade Stengrim's fifth of the playoffs at 10:43 put the Tigers up by two once again. A quick draw win from Gordon-Carroll fed Stengrim in the slot for a rocket of a wrist shot.   Ethan Neutens' empty netter at 18:19 depleted any hope Calgary had of coming back, and the Tigers completed a 4-0 series sweep to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals for the second straight year.
