T-Birds players and staff have a long history of participation in events and programs which benefit the community during the season. The Thunderbirds understand the importance of education in the community and strive to support local schools in providing a rewarding educational experience for students.
Beginning in 2010, the T-Birds developed a partnership with Communities In Schools of Kent in order to help achieve these goals. Communities In Schools is the nation’s leading dropout prevention organization. They work closely with schools, social services, businesses and volunteers to get young people the things they need to learn and grow and to be successful in school and in life.
During the 2012-13 school year, the Thunderbirds were able to host nine assemblies at schools in Kent, Auburn, Federal Way and Black Diamond – reaching over 3000 students. Schools were able to choose from three topics: Anti-Bullying, Responsibility and Goal-Setting. Also, 10 players served as mentors to students at Neely O’Brien Elementary – the players served over 100 hours in mentoring. This program is beneficial to not only the students but the T-Bird players as well, who learn the value of working with students and serving as role models.
