T-Birds Lose First Game to Wenatchee
KENT, Wash. – The Seattle Thunderbirds tasted defeat for the first time this season as they fell, 3-1, to the Wenatchee Wild Friday at the accesso ShoWare Center. Seattle’s next action is next Friday when they host the Vancouver Giants.
“I think we’ve been pretty confident with the way we’ve played,” said head coach Matt O’Dette. “But if you don’t bring it every night, you’re not gonna have the results you’re looking for. You want to not have to learn that lesson, but there was some humble pie tonight.”
The Thunderbirds got on top with a first period goal from Noah Kosick, assisted by Antonio Martorana and Grayson Tash. Kosick is off to a solid start. It was his third goal of the season to go along with one assist through three games. “It’s a great feeling,” said the Anaheim Ducks prospect of his start. “We have a great team, a lot of guys who can do a lot of roles. (I’m) fortunate to be off to a decent start.”
Wenatchee tied the game at 12:28 of the second period, scoring six seconds after their third power play ended. The goal also ended the T-Birds shutout streak to start the season at 152:28 minutes, a franchise record.
Seattle (2-1-0-0) started to push the pace in the third period, outshooting the Wild through the first twelve minutes, 15-2. But a T-Birds penalty led to the Wild scoring the game winner via the power play. “You have to know how to manage the game,” commented O’Dette. “We took penalties at inopportune times. That one their and, when we were trying to get back in the game late, we take one with a couple minutes left. That’s not the recipe to win.”
Wenatchee would score an empty net goal to close out the scoring with a minute left. Seattle finished the night 0-for-5 with the man advantage. “That’s a microcosm of the whole game,” said O’Dette of the team’s failure on the power play. “You’re not sharp enough, not handling the puck well enough, not simplifying enough. Give them credit. They worked, they won races, they won battles. They earned the win and we did not,”
T-BIRDS EXTRAS
The T-Birds have started the season 0-for-13 on the power play.
The loss snapped Seattle’s nine game home ice winning streak over the Wild dating back to February of 2024.
Tash, with his assist, joined Kosick as the only T-Birds with points in all three games this season.
Former T-Birds captain Tyrel Bauer (2018-2022) made his NHL debut Friday for the Winnipeg Jets.
