T-Birds Fly Past Silvertips In Shootout

Strand scores only shootout goal, Hughes stops three Everett shooters in 3-2 shootout win

EVERETT, January 27, 2018 — Austin Strand scored the only goal in the shootout and goalie Liam Hughes stopped all three shooters to lead the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 3-2 shootout win over the Everett Silvertips in front of 5,476 raucous fans at the accesso ShoWare Center Saturday night.

Noah Philp was the T-Birds first shooter in the shootout. Everett goalie Carter Hart stopped Philp with a glove save. Patrick Bajkov was Everett’s first shooter and his in close shot went off the cross bar.

Zack Andrusiak was the second T-Birds shooter and Hart made a stick save on his attempt. Matt Fonteyne was Everett’s second shooter and he made a backhand to forehand move and shot wide.

Strand was the T-Birds third shooter. Strand stickhandled at Hart and beat him through the legs for the goal. Garrett Pilon was the Silvertips third shooter. Pilon took a wrist shot from the middle of the circle and Hughes made a glove save to secure the win and snap the Silvertips eight game winning streak.

This was the second of a home-and-home series against the Silvertips. Everett won 3-1 Friday night at Angel of the Winds Arena.

The T-Birds travel to Kennewick to face the Tri-City Americans on Sunday at 5:05pm at Toyota Center.

Everett (31-16-1-2) took a 1-0 lead at 3:44 of the first period on a goal from Connor Dewar. Pilon had the only assist.

The Silvertips outshot the T-Birds 12-8 in the first period.

Seattle (27-17-4-2) tied the game 1-1 at 7:34 of the second period. Noah Philp carried the puck from right to left behind the Everett net and passed the puck to Blake Bargar in the low left circle. Bargar quickly put the puck on goal and beat Hart over the glove. Donovan Neuls had the second assist.

Everett led 22-15 in shots after two periods by outshooting Seattle 10-7 in the second period.

Dewar scored at 7:41 of the third period to put the Silvertips in front 2-1. Pilon and Riley Sutter had the assists.

The T-Birds tied the game 2-2 on the power play at 10:25 of the third. Andrusiak took a shot from the right circle that rebounded off Hart into the low slot. Nolan Volcan and Mathew Wedman crashed the net. Volcan got a shot off and then Wedman punched the rebound past Hart for his 10^th goal of the season.

Both teams had 13 shots on goal in the third period.

The T-Birds were awarded a power play 21 seconds into overtime when Kevin Davis was called for interference on Turner Ottenbreit. The T-Birds had several good chances, but Hart made the saves.

Hughes stopped 34 of 36 shots and his record is now 9-6-1-1.

Hart had 29 saves on 31 shots and his record is now 18-3-0-2.
