Jackson Berry Makes 28 Saves For First Career Win As T-Birds Down Winterhawks
Gustafson scores first career WHL goal in 3-2 win over Portland
KENT, March 27, 2021 — Jackson Berry made 28 saves Saturday night at accesso ShoWare Center to earn his first career WHL win and lead the Seattle Thunderbirds to a 3-2 victory over the Portland Winterhawks.
The T-Birds and Winterhawks will meet for the second of back-to-back games on Sunday at accesso ShoWare Center. This game will be broadcast on JOEtv at 5:05pm with Ian Furness calling the play-by-play and Andy Eide providing the analysis. The T-Birds have four games on JOEtv in March.
Berry was making his first start as a T-Birds and he had 14 saves in the first period, five saves in the second period and nine saves in the third period. He stopped a Jaydon Dureau breakaway in the first period and denied Kyle Chyzowski on a breakaway early in the third period with the T-Birds up by one.

Jordan Gustafson scored his first career WHL goal, which turned out to be the game-winner, with 52 seconds left in the second period. He now has a goal and two assists in his first four games.

Portland took a 1-0 lead at 8:24 of the first period on a goal by Seth Jarvis.
The T-Birds kept the Winterhawks hemmed in their zone for several shifts and Lucas Ciona cashed in at 10:54 of the second to tie the game 1-1. Conner Roulette had the puck behind the Portland net. Ciona came down the slot yelling for the puck and Roulette found him with a backhand pass. Ciona beat Portland goalie Dante Giannuzzi over the right shoulder for his first goal of the season. Kevin Korchinski had the second assist.

Ciona now has a goal and three assists in the first four games of the season. Korchinski has a three-game assist streak and Roulette has two goals and two assists in the last two games.
Simon Knak scored an unassisted goal at 11:34 of the second to give the Winterhawks a 2-01 lead.
Payton Mount tied the game 2-2 at 18:18 of the second. Cade McNelly skated the puck into the offensive zone and passed to Mount on top of the right circle. Mount held the puck as McNelly charged down the slot. Mount took a wrist shot that beat Giannuzzi on the glove side for his first goal of the season. Henrik Rybinski had the second assist.

Gustafson scored his first career WHL goal with 52 seconds left in the second to give the T-Birds a 3-2 lead heading into the intermission. Tyrel Bauer took a wrist shot from the top of the right circle that Gustafson tipped past Giannuzzi. Ryan Gottfried had the second assist.

Henrik Rybinski was called for a penalty with 2:27 left in the game. Portland pulled Giannuzzi for an extra attacker and pressured the T-Birds. Berry made two key saves and the T-Birds held off the Winterhawks.
