Wash. — Nolan Chastko has always been a bit of a Swiss Army Knife.

A goal-scorer, a penalty killer, he’s done it all over his hockey life. So when the Silvertips approached him to play defense- a position he had not played since he was 8 years old- in the middle of his overager season out of necessity, he didn’t bat an eye.

“I had nothing to lose at all and was pretty intrigued with it,” Chastko explained. “I thought it was only going to be for a couple games and then it ended up being quite a bit, but it was a really cool experience. I can’t thank our defensive coach Mike Field enough for the work that he put in with me. Our entire d-corps helping me and giving me feedback after each shift was really cool. It’s something that I take great pride in.”

Chastko ultimately appeared in 25 games as a defenseman over the course of the 2025-26 season, accumulating 13 points and a +12 defensive rating. It’s an astonishing feat to not only plug into a new position- but to also thrive in that spot.

The Brandon native’s humility and willingness to jump in wherever he can best help the team is a true testament to his character and commitment to his team. It does not go unnoticed within the Silvertips organization and fanbase.

Fellow overager Rylan Gould remembers playing spring hockey both with and against Chastko growing up in Manitoba. “Even from that age it was clear that [Chastko] would do anything for his team,” Gould noted. “Being with him in Everett is just something that I’m so grateful for. He’s the ultimate team player. He will do anything for the team and we all love him. He’s one of the guys that you need on a winning team.”

Chastko signed his WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the Prince George Cougars as an undrafted player in 2022. The Silvertips acquired Chastko’s rights from the Cougars at the trade deadline in 2023. In the meantime, Chastko spent time playing for the Virden Oil Capitals in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, where he scored 30 goals with 25 assists in 53 games in 2023-24. He finally cracked the Silvertips’ roster as a 19-year-old in 2024.

“Obviously it took me a little bit to get here,” Chastko smiled, “but as soon as I got here, I knew it was a pretty special place to be. Looking back at the last two years here, it’s been pretty surreal and I just couldn’t be happier for the opportunity that I got here. It’s been a great two years.”

Though Chastko had a later start in the Western Hockey League than most, he has accumulated valuable experience in a truncated amount of time. He appeared in 63 regular season games and all 13 Playoff games on a U.S. Division, Western Conference and Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy-winning ’24-25 Silvertip team, posting 14 regular season points. He has followed that up by appearing in all 67 games played this campaign with nine goals and 24 assists for 33 points.

“We have so much respect for him in our locker room,” commented overager Zackary Shantz. “He’s just been an awesome guy for us. It was just so impressive to see him not complain about his role and just do it with a smile.”

Chastko expressed gratitude for the opportunity to not only finish out his career as a Silvertip, but to do so surrounded by two other overagers with whom he’s grown so close.

“All three of us together, I wouldn’t want to live out my 20-year in junior hockey with any two other guys. It’s just been awesome.”

“It’s been a dream come true,” he continued, “just from the coaching staff, everyone in the front office, and the players that we have, it’s just been an amazing time. I couldn’t thank our coaches enough for the development and just the trust that they had in me, my two years being here. They definitely helped a lot for my hockey career on the ice and then even off the ice just making me a better person, they been great with it all.”

Chastko echoed a familiar sentiment when asked about the companionship found within the Tips’ room.

“This is by far the tightest group I’ve ever been a part of. It really feels like we’re just a bunch of brothers in the locker room which is just an amazing feeling. These are guys that I’m going to be talking to for the rest of my life. Whether it’s bus trips, even just practices with the guys, coming to the rink was a treat every single day, nothing’s better than that.”

Reflecting on a historic campaign for the 2025-26 Silvertips, he emphasized his favorite part was celebrating them all as a team. No matter if it is a team achievement or an individual one, a win for one is a win for all- a prototypical Chastko response.

“I’m super proud of the individual guys who have set records and then the team ones are obviously super special. Something that I never really thought I would be a part of but really cool to be a part of.”

As the Silvertips head into playoffs, Chastko admits that the finality of his last run is kept in the back of his mind. “As much as you don’t think that it would, I think it definitely plays a part. Just a lot more, ‘this is it’ type of mindset. I know all three of us [overagers] will be going all out and everyone in the dressing room will be playing really hard, so that’s all you can ask for.”

Article by Lindsey McClellan

EVERETT. I think how close we are as a team really helps what we do on the ice.”

Shantz’s overage season in the WHL has been a breakout one, as he has more than doubled his total regular season points from last season. Racking up 27 goals and 38 assists for 65 points in 64 games played, he has been a near-constant on the statsheet while playing key defensive minutes as a center. He truly burst onto the scene with a natural hat trick on opening night, propelling the Silvertips to a 4-3 comeback shootout victory against the Wenatchee Wild.

The Prince George Cougars originally selected Shantz in the 2020 WHL Draft. He suited up for nine games with the Cougars in both the ’21-22 and ’22-23 seasons before being traded to the Regina Pats where he posted 17 goals and 34 assists in 117 games played. He was a key piece for the Silvertips down the stretch in 2024-25, logging 11 points in 21 games and six points in 13 Playoff outings.

The importance of keeping things fun is not lost on the Silvertips and their overager crew. Reflecting on his time in the WHL, Shantz conceded maintaining a loose and positive attitude is his top piece of advice for young newcomers to the league.

“Just have fun with it,” he noted. “A 20-year-old told me when I was 16 just to enjoy every moment. For me, just being present everywhere I am, I think that helps a lot.”

Shantz shares his overager status with Rylan Gould, who he skated against numerous times as East Division rivals playing for Regina and Swift Current, respectively.

“I remember battling with him and him being such a good player,” Gould reminisced. “I’m lucky enough to get to play with him this year. I’m just taking it day by day still. I don’t really want it to end, so just trying to go as far as we can.”

Shantz announced his commitment to play Division-I hockey next season at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota in February, a new venture he’s eagerly anticipating. “They just have an awesome program and everything that I was looking for. I think another league will be exciting and I’m excited just to make new friends.”

In the meantime, he’s relishing every opportunity to play in Everett.

“Just getting this opportunity to play here has meant so much to me. I’ve never been prouder than being a Silvertip.”

Gould was selected in the second round of the 2020 WHL Draft by the Swift Current Broncos, with whom he would go on to spend four seasons. In May of 2025, the Silvertips acquired Gould in a trade with the Broncos- however, the acquisition was nullified by his decision to commit to Michigan Tech for the 2025-26 season. Gould played six games in the NCAA before returning to the Western Hockey League, allowing Everett and Swift Current to complete a modified version of their original trade in late October.

Gould saw the opportunity waiting for him in Everett to play on a close-knit team with the potential to go far and decided he couldn’t pass it up.

“It was kind of a no brainer, in a sense,” he explained. “With the opportunity to win in your last year, you can’t ask for much more than that. Seeing how close they were [in Everett] and the type of group, it was contagious and definitely something that I wanted to be a part of.”

On Feb. 22, Gould played in his 300th WHL game, reaching a milestone that not even Gould himself imagined he would achieve. With varying paths both to the WHL and out of the WHL that may limit overall time in the league, 300 game players are an increasingly rare breed.

“You take it on a game-by-game basis and it goes by super quick,” Gould recalled. “I was surrounded by great groups of people and guys with good character, and I think that translated to over here where this is the tightest group I’ve ever been a part of. It made it a lot easier to want to battle for everyone every night.”

In celebration of the milestone, Silvertips players and staff alike wore matching 300th-game shirts to the arena with some writing “300” on their stick tape- a gesture Gould called “unexpected.”

“It’s a testimony to how close we are. It’s still a whirlwind, I didn’t really feel like I deserved all that but they’re such a great group and I’m super lucky to have them.”

Playing the majority of his WHL career in a small town like Swift Current, Saskatchewan taught Gould the importance of community and putting the team and fans before anything else. Gould’s trademark brand of positivity, wisdom, and humility was quickly recognized by the team and the fanbase.

“It’s more about the team and the community than it ever will be about yourself and that’s something that I wanted to bring here,” he explained. “We have the best fans in the league and such a great coaching staff and group where I felt that it was easy to be myself.”

“He’s aways been a super hard worker,” said fellow overager and Manitoban Nolan Chastko. “He really embodies the Silvertip identity and just works his bag off. I can’t say enough good things about him. Off the ice, he’s an unbelievable guy, one of the best guys that I know. He was really easy to bond with and fit in super well as soon as he got here.”

Zack Shantz, a former East Division rival-turned-teammate and fellow overager, emphasized the close bond that they have come to share on and off the ice this season. “He’s just so sound, he does everything right. We are so close off the ice and that also helps [production] on the ice. He sees the ice so well and he talks a lot if he wants something to change on the ice. We always on the same page and it helps a lot.”

The Silvertips have had a historic season thus far, smashing the franchise wins record, tying the WHL’s road wins record, and approaching the WHL’s record for most wins in a 68-game season.

“You don’t really expect to break all these records,” Gould said. “You just go one game at a time and then they kind of sneak up on you. We just want to keep getting better and keep having fun and I think that will take us a long way.”

It hasn’t set in for Gould yet that it is his last season, and he doesn’t think that it will set in any time soon. “At some point there will be a time where we can’t do it anymore, so our mindset is to play the last game and win it. If there is a regret, it would be to not enjoy this because it’s not every day that we get this opportunity.”

It’s hard for Gould to pick just one favorite memory from his time in Everett. “Whether it’s the bus trips or laughing on the bench or in the room, every single day being with this group, there’s nothing like it.”

Article by Lindsey McClellan

EVERETT, Wash. — Rylan Gould knows his path to Everett was unconventional.
