ICE FREEZE OUT REBELS – Erik Benoit scored a pair of goals as the Kootenay Ice edged the visiting Red Deer Rebels 3-2 in Western Hockey League action on Sunday.
Sam Reinhart got his 16th goal of the season for the Ice (15-24-1-0), who got two goals from Benoit in a 3:30 span in the third period as they post their fifth consecutive victory. Mackenzie Skapski made 21 saves to claim his 15th win of the season.
Turner Elson scored for a third straight game while Matt Bellerive also counted for the Rebels (23-17-2-2), who went 0-for-3 on the power play as they suffer their fifth loss over their last six games. Bolton Pouliot stopped 45 of 48 shots in a valiant effort, taking the loss.
HURRICANES 4, WARRIORS 1
Reid Duke scored his first two goals of the season to pace the Lethbridge Hurricanes to a 4-1 victory over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors on Sunday.
Christopher Tai turned in a 40-save performance to record his third win in four appearances this season for the Hurricanes (20-18-1-5), who had lost their previous two outings. Jaimen Yakubowski also scored twice in the win.
Brayden Point tallied his ninth goal of the season for the Warriors (14-21-3-4), who suffer their fourth straight setback and their seventh loss in nine games. Justin Paulic made 27 saves in the loss for Moose Jaw.
PATS 3, WHEAT KINGS 1
Colton Jobke broke a 1-1 tie 3:47 into the third period with his second goal of the season to lead the Regina Pats to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings on Sunday.
Lane Scheidl and Morgan Klimchuk each picked up a goal and an assist for the Pats (18-21-2-2), who post their fifth straight win and move past Medicine Hat into eighth place in the Eastern Conference. Matt Hewitt stopped 25 of 26 shots to earn the victory.
Tim McGauley tallied his 11th goal of the season for the Wheat Kings (14-24-2-2), who opened the scoring early in the second period but allowed three unanswered goals to absorb their fourth straight defeat. Corbin Boes made 31 saves in the loss.
HITMEN 5, GIANTS 4
Brady Brassart’s second goal of the game, a power play marker 10:39 into the third period, lifted the Calgary Hitmen to a 5-4 win over the visiting Vancouver Giants on Sunday.
Zane Jones – with a goal and an assist – Pavlo Padakin and Greg Chase also scored for the Hitmen (27-10-1-3), who converted two of three power play chances en route to their third win in a row. Mack Shields made 22 stops to pick up his sixth win of the season.
Brett Kulak scored and set up two more while Riley Kieser, Cain Franson and Jackson Houck also scored for the Giants (11-30-0-0), who went 2-for-7 on the power play while falling to 1-2 through three games of a five-game Central Division tour. Payton Lee made 29 saves in the loss.
