Tired Silvertips Struggle in Portland
PORTLAND, OR – Playing their third game in three days after back-to-back shootout victories, the Everett Silvertips suffered a tough 7-1 defeat against the Portland Winterhawks Sunday evening at Memorial Coliseum. Following just their third regulation loss of the season, the Silvertips will have the next four days off before a pair of road games next weekend against Victoria and Seattle.
Kohl Bauml scored the lone Everett goal off an assist from Nikita Scherbak to put the ‘Tips ahead in the first period. Portland took over from there with two goals in 21 seconds late in the first period and Kevin Constantine was issued a game misconduct as the Silvertips fell to 4-1-1-0 against the Winterhawks this season.
The ‘Tips went up 1-0 six minutes in when Scherbak stole a puck in the offensive zone and fired a shot that was stopped before Bauml tucked in the rebound on his forehand. Portland tied the game on the powerplay on a shot from the right circle by Nic Petan at the 11:10 mark. Tempers flared after Ivan Nikolishin was launched into the boards from behind by Alex Schoenborn, but the ensuing penalties led only to a 4-on-4 situation. Petan scored his second of the period seconds later and Constantine was then ejected for arguing the calls with the officials. Oliver Bjorkstrand put a shot off the post and in on the ensuing powerplay and the ‘Hawks led 3-1 after one.
The Silvertips settled back in for the start of the second period, but were unable to narrow the gap before Blake Heinrich, Miles Koules and Shoenborn all scored in the latter half of the period. Austin Lotz was replaced in goal by Carter Hart in the third period, with Schoenborn capping off the 7-1 Portland win with this second goal of the night in the last 20 minutes.
Austin Lotz (10-3-1-1) was tagged with the loss and finished with 24 saves in 40 minutes before Hart came in to stop nine of ten in the third. Brendan Burke (5-5-0-3) stopped 20 shots for the Winterhawks, who outshot the ‘Tips 40-21. Everett was 0 for 6 on the powerplay after four late opportunities, while Portland finished 3 for 5.
