Royals wrap up weekend series against Seattle with a win
Victoria, BC. — The Victoria Royals returned to the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre this afternoon to close out a weekend series against the Seattle Thunderbirds. After defeating Seattle 5-3 on Friday, the Royals completed the series with another 5-3 win.
Wyatt Danyleyko opened the scoring with his fourth goal of the season, assisted by Caleb Matthews, just over two minutes into the first period. The Royals took a two-goal lead with an unassisted tuck from Hayden Moore at 8:45 of the frame, but Seattle responded with a goal from Braeden Cootes just over 30 seconds later. After notching a season-high 18 shots in the opening frame, the Royals led 2-1 headed into the first intermission.
The second period remained scoreless for over 15 minutes, but Eli McKamey struck on a power play to mark his first WHL goal, assisted by Odin Vauhkonen and Hayden Moore. Seattle responded with a goal from Brock England at 18:44 to bring the score to 3-2 after 40 minutes of play.
Reggie Newman gave the Royals back the two-goal lead with a tip-in goal off assists from Timofei Runtso and Heath Nelson at 6:03 of the third period. The Thunderbirds brought the game within one with a goal from Braeden Cootes at 12:40, but an empty net goal from Roan Woodward, assisted by Landon Young, to secure the 5-3 win.
