Royals secured shootout win against Vees
Victoria, BC. — The Victoria Royals hosted the Penticton Vees today in an afternoon clash at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre to close out their double-header. After falling 6-3 to the Vees last night, the Royals answered with a 4-3 shootout win to bring their season series to 3-1 Royals.
Penticton struck first with a power play goal from Ryden Evers at 8:46 of the opening frame. The Royals were unable to get on the board through the first 20 minutes, so the score remained 1-0 Vees headed into the first intermission.
Layne Schofield netted his first career WHL goal at 3:23 of the second period, assisted by Hayden Moore, to bring the score to an even 1-1. The Royals took the lead just over three minutes later with a goal from Roan Woodward, assisted by Nolan Stewart and Cruz Waltze. Moore’s and Woodwards’ goals came on two consecutive shots, and both came before Penticton had marked any second-frame shot attempts. Ashton Brown widened the Royals’ lead at 13:44 of the frame, assisted by Miles Cooper and Henry Peterson, to bring the score to 3-1 Royals after two periods of play.
The Vees cut their deficit to one with a goal from Ethan Weber at 11:23 of the third frame, and Diego Johnson knotted the game with another Vees goal just under three minutes later. The Royals were unable to convert on their late-frame power plays, and the teams remained tied at three after 60 minutes to force an overtime frame.
Overtime solved nothing, so the shootout was needed to settle the score.
The Royals took the shootout win with consecutive goals from Roan Woodward and Ludovic Perreault. Goaltender Jake Pilon stopped 32/35 shots in 65 minutes of play and 2/2 shootout attempts to earn the win in his first start with the Royals.
