Royals Defenceman Timofei Runtso Shining in First WHL Season
Victoria, B.C. – Victoria Royals defenceman Timofei Runtso is quickly establishing himself as one of the Western Hockey League’s most promising young blueliners.
Just 13 games into his WHL campaign, the 18-year-old from Marina del Rey, California, has impressed with his steady two-way play and offensive production, posting 3 goals and 10 assists for 13 points, leading all Royals defencemen and ranking third in the league for points as a defenceman.
Runtso made an immediate impact in his WHL debut, recording an assist in Victoria’s home opener against the Penticton Vees. Since then, he has collected points in eight of the team’s first 13 games, demonstrating consistency and confidence well beyond his years.
“He’s played well. He’s played the most minutes for any of our defenseman” said Royals Head Coach James Patrick. “We’re spending a lot of time with him working on his defensive game, getting him to move the puck… in saying that he’s played really well. We’ve noticed it, I have gotten a number of calls from scouts, so he’s raised his awareness that’s for sure”.
One of Runtso’s standout performances came against the Kelowna Rockets, where he tallied three assists and earned the game’s second star. He also netted his first WHL goal in a three-point outing against the Vancouver Giants earlier this season.
The 18-year-old defenceman has earned a spot on the Royals’ top defensive pairing, playing key minutes in all situations. His composure under pressure and ability to transition play effectively have made him a reliable presence on the back end.
“It’s a great experience playing here, the team is great, beautiful downtown, and the fans are great. I just love it here.” said Timofei Runtso. “Coaches are giving me opportunities. All I can do is appreciate what I have and show what I have”.
Runtso’s strong start has also garnered attention from NHL scouts. He was recently named to NHL Central Scouting’s Preliminary Players to Watch List for the 2026 NHL Draft, recognizing him as a player to monitor closely as the season progresses. “It good to know I’m being watched, definitely a confidence booster” said Runtso.
Runtso and the Royals will look to keep that momentum going as they return home for a weekend doubleheader against the Penticton Vees on Saturday, November 1, and Sunday, November 2nd at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
