Recap: Royals fall to the Vancouver Giants 5-3
Port Coquitlam, B.C. – The Victoria Royals were back at the Jon Baillie Arena to take on the Vancouver Giants for the second game of the back-to-back series to start the pre-season.
Koltin Herfst opened the scoring at 17:53 of the first period, assisted by Markus Loponen, both in their first game for the Royals.
Seven minutes later, Kyren Gronick tied the game assisted by London Hoilett and Aaron Obobaifo. That same trio would each get a point on the second goal of the game, with Obobaifo scoring with less than one second on the clock at the end of the first, giving the Giants a 2-1 lead.
Layne Schofield would tie the game at 2 for the Royals only 1:16 into the second period. Netminder Spencer Michnik took over the net at the halfway mark of the game. Jayden Kraus finished the game with 15 saves on 17 shots.
After 16 minutes of scoreless play, the Giants would score two goals within 3 minutes of eachother to take a 4-2 lead, with Jakob Oreskovic scoring on the power play and Colton Roberts scoring with .4 seconds remaining in the second.
The third period would remain scoreless until 3:48 remaining where Reggie Newman would bring the Royals within one goal, assisted by Markus Loponen and Nolan Stewart.
The Giants would respond one minute later with a power play goal from Mazden Leslie, giving the Giants the 5-3 lead.
The Royals would not get another goal past Burke Hood and would lose the game 5-3.
The Royals’ next game is Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 7pm vs. the Seattle Thunderbirds at the accesso Showare Center in Kent, Washington. The game will have an audio stream on the Victoria Royals Facebook page.
