Recap: Royals (6) vs. Winterhawks (5) – Overtime – February 28th, 2025
Victoria, B.C. — Tonight, the Victoria Royals hosted the Portland Winterhawks at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre for the first game of a back-to-back series.
The Royals opened the scoring at 7:18 of the first period with a marker from Teydon Trembecky, assisted by Justin Kipkie and Cole Reschny. Trembecky added his second goal of the evening at 10:53, extending Victoria’s lead to two goals with assists from Cole Reschny and Nate Misskey. The Winterhawks answered back at 12:38 of the frame with a goal from Alex Weiermair. Keaton Verhoeff extended the Royals lead to 3-1 with a power play goal at 16:34. The goal, Verhoeff’s 17th of the season, put Verhoeff third all time in goals by a 16-year-old defenseman in the WHL. The Royals led 3-1 after 20 minutes of play.
At 12:41 of the second frame Max Pšenička scored on the power play for the Winterhawks to cut the Royals lead to 3-2 after two periods.
Just over one minute into the third period, the Winterhawks tied the game at three on a goal from Diego Buttazzoni. Less than one minute later, Carter Sotheran scored to give Portland a 4-3 lead. Teydon Trembecky tied the game at four with a power play marker, and his third goal of the game at 12:19 of the period. Portland regained the lead on a goal from Kyle Chyzowski which came at four on four. In the final minute of regulation, Keaton Verhoeff tied the game at five with his second goal of the night. The goal, Verhoeff’s 18th this season, ties him for the most by a Royals Defenceman in a single-season.
With an equal score of 5-5, the game would go to overtime and in the final minute a marker from Brandon Lisowsky would seal a 6-5 win for the Royals.
