Team Matchups
Victoria will enter the eye of the Hurricanes for the first and only time this season on Tuesday night. Don’t let Lethbridge’s position in the standings fool you; the Hurricanes (7-15-0-1) are an offence-driven team with the ability to capitalize on mistakes. Tight defence and an aggressive counterattack will be crucial to picking up two points at home this week.
The Seattle Thunderbirds will be the first obstacle on the Royals’ road trip this weekend. Seattle (8-8-2-0) sits in the middle of the U.S. Division and hosts some star players. While they have accumulated the most penalty minutes in the WHL, their penalty kill packs a punch and has been known to put up a shorthanded goal. The Thunderbirds also have the highest home win percentage in the Western Conference, posing a challenge to any visitors in their domain.
The Royals will close out the road trip in Spokane to take on the Chiefs. Spokane (10-10-0-0) is just above Seattle in the standings. While they may not quite be the offensive juggernaut, they were last season; the Chiefs still present a threat to any opponent. After Spokane beat the Royals in six games in round two of the playoffs last season, Victoria will be hungry for revenge in their first clash with the Chiefs this year.
Players to Watch
Victoria
Miles Cooper – The lone goal-scorer for the Royals in Friday’s game against Edmonton, Miles Cooper has been on a hot streak lately. The Calgary-born forward has had a point in eight of his last ten outings, with a total of 18 points in 20 games this season. Cooper will look to keep his offence rolling this week.
Lethbridge
Luke Cozens – The younger brother of Ottawa Senator and former Hurricane Dylan Cozens, Luke Cozens has been a powerhouse for Lethbridge this season. Leading the team in points and earning a seven-point game earlier this month against the Brandon Wheat Kings, Cozens will be relied on by the Hurricanes to drive their offence on Tuesday night.
Seattle
Braeden Cootes – The fifteenth pick in the 2025 NHL draft, Cootes has already put up 15 points in his ten games back with Seattle after joining the Vancouver Canucks at the beginning of the season. Praised by scouts for his energy and playmaking ability, Cootes is a dynamic force anywhere on the ice.
Spokane
Mathis Preston – Penticton-born forward Mathis Preston was the fourth player in WHL history to score four goals in less than eight games as a 15-year-old, a feat accomplished in his rookie season in 2023/24. Now in his third year with Spokane, Preston has been a consistent contributor for the Chiefs throughout his WHL career. The 17-year-old winger is no stranger to the Royals, scoring twice in a 9-6 victory over Victoria in game four of last season’s playoff series between the two.
