Szturc and Czechia fall to Finland in shootout at 2022 World Juniors
Kelowna Rockets forward Gabriel Szturc and Czechia were defeated in the shootout as Finland won 4-3 on Thursday at the 2022 World Junior Championship in Edmonton, Alta.
Szturc finished the game with 19:24 of ice time, posting a shot on net and two penalty minutes.
Czechia jumped out to a 2-0 in the opening frame, Finland pulled back within one before the end of the period.
Former Everett Silvertip/Swift Current Bronco Kasper Puutio tied things up with the lone goal of the second period. Czechia challenged the goal for goalie interference, but it was deemed a good goal. Gabriel Szturc had a great chance on the ensuing penalty kill for the failed challenge.
Finland grabbed their first lead of the game in the third on a goal from New York Islanders prospect Aatu Raty, but Hamilton Bulldogs centreman Jan Mysak responded two minutes later for Czechia.
The two played five minutes of continuous overtime that had no stoppages, Finland outshot Czechia 3-0 in extra time.
Kasper Simontaival scored the shootout winner to break a 3-3 tie and keep the Finns perfect at the tournament.
With the loss Czechia moves to 1-0-1-0 and now has four points, they’ll face Canada on Saturday at 3:00 pm PT.
