DRAFT PROFILE: Mazden Leslie
Kelowna, B.C. – With the 2025 NHL Entry Draft fast approaching, defenseman Mazden Leslie is one of four of the Kelowna Rockets players expected to garner attention from NHL clubs.
A 6-foot-1, 201-pound right-shot defenseman from Lloydminster, Alberta, Leslie brings a combination of elite WHL experience, offensive production, and leadership to the table. His mobility, puck skills, and ability to play big minutes in all situations have made him one of the most intriguing overage defensemen available in this year’s draft.
Leslie was acquired by the Rockets earlier this offseason from the Vancouver Giants in exchange for a 2028 first-round pick and a 2026 third-round pick (Seattle). The trade brought in a proven playmaker from the backend, one expected to be a key piece of Kelowna’s push toward the 2026 Memorial Cup, which the team will host.
In 2024–25, Leslie served as the captain of the Giants and posted career-best numbers
-
66 games with Vancouver: 21 goals, 51 assists (72 points)
-
Playoffs: 5 games, 1 assist
Over four WHL seasons, Leslie has compiled
-
280 regular season games
-
57 goals, 133 assists (190 points)
-
21 games of playoff experience
Leslie has built a reputation as one of the WHL’s most dynamic offensive defensemen, finishing near the top of league scoring among blueliners each of the past two seasons. His calmness under pressure, combined with a heavy shot and strong skating base, allows him to contribute consistently in transition and on the power play.
He was ranked #133 among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting in their final rankings.
As an older draft-eligible prospect, Leslie’s maturity and four years of major junior experience have NHL teams taking notice. His production, leadership background, and poise in crucial situations position him as a value pick with potential for teams seeking a right-shot defenseman prepared for advancement.
