iSight Optometry Game Recap: Rockets Open East Division Trip with 6–4 Win in Swift Current
The Kelowna Rockets opened their seven-game East Division road trip with an energetic 6–4 victory over the Swift Current Broncos on Wednesday night at the InnovationPlex. Kelowna built a 3–0 first-period lead and held off a late Broncos push to secure their 14th win of the season.
GAME SUMMARY
Kelowna wasted no time asserting themselves, striking just 29 seconds into the contest. Dawson Gerwing (5) opened the scoring against his former team, redirecting a Rowan Guest point shot for the early 1–0 lead.
The Rockets continued to dictate the pace. At 7:19, Mazden Leslie (5) jumped into the rush and finished a cross-crease feed from Guest to extend the advantage. Minutes later, Carson Wetsch (10) made it 3–0, finishing a backdoor pass from Will Sharpe off the rush.
Swift Current got on the board in the second period with a power-play goal from Jace McFaul (7), but the Rockets responded quickly. Levi Benson (2) scored his second in as many games, cutting inside and going bar-down to restore the three-goal lead. At 14:20, Shane Smith (16) added to the cushion, burying a backhander from the slot for what stood as the game-winning goal.
The Broncos mounted pressure in the third, scoring three times in a 10-minute span, including goals from Laplante, Gauchier, and Dingman. But Kelowna sealed the victory late. With under two minutes remaining, and on the power play, Smith (17) knocked home a rebound for his second of the night, closing out a strong offensive performance.
Goaltender Harrison Boettiger earned his seventh win of the season, making several timely saves as Swift Current surged late.
