The Rebels open preseason play with a home-and-home series with the Calgary Hitmen, followed by games versus the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Edmonton Oil Kings.<\/p>\n

Two more Red Deer Rebels alumni are now Calder Cup champions.<\/p>\n

Reese Johnson and Ben King are members of the Toronto Marlies who claimed the American Hockey League after downing the Chicago Wolves in the league\u2019s championship final.<\/p>\n

Johnson, who hails from Saskatoon, SK appeared in 15 playoff games for the Marlies after playing in 47 regular season contests, recording 15 points.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old forward played for the Rebels from 2014-19 and recorded 100 points (55 goals, 45 assists) in 187 career games. He added eight points in 15 playoff tilts. Johnson was the club\u2019s captain during his final season in 2018-19, scoring 27 goals and 53 points.<\/p>\n

Johnson signed an entry-level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks in March 2019 and shortly after made his professional debut with the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League. Johnson made his NHL debut in the 2020-21 season when he played five games with the Blackhawks. He remained with the Blackhawks organization through 2024, suiting up for 141 NHL games and recording 17 points (seven goals, 10 assists). In 2024-25 Johnson signed a one-year deal with the Minnesota Wild and spent most of the season playing for their AHL affiliate in Iowa before being traded to the Marlies.<\/p>\n

King, who is 24, had four points in 20 games this season with the Marlies after joining the club midseason. He played for the Rebels from 2019-2023 and racked up 206 points (97 goals, 109 assists) in 165 games. He added 21 points (eight goals, 13 assists) in 20 playoff games. King ranks sixth in goals and ninth in points in team history and is one of just six Rebels players to score 50 or more goals in a season. The Vernon, BC native was as finalist for WHL Player of the Year in 2021-22 after leading the league with 52 goals.<\/p>\n

King has played 145 career AHL games with San Diego, Manitoba, and Toronto, compiling 60 points. He was selected by Anaheim at the 2022 NHL Draft.<\/p>\n

As well, former Rebels athletic therapist Jordan Aube works for the Marlies.<\/p>\n

RED DEER – The Red Deer Rebels will kick off the home portion of their 2026-27 WHL Regular Season against a familiar foe.<\/p>\n

The Rebels will host the Edmonton Oil Kings for the Red Deer Advocate Home Opener on Saturday, September 19 at 6 p.m. at the Marchant Crane Centrium.<\/p>\n

This marks the 11th time the Rebels are playing the Oil Kings for home opener with Red Deer going 5-4-1 in the previous 10.<\/p>\n

The 2026 WHL Preseason schedule will be announced on Monday, June 22 while the full schedule for the 2026-27 WHL Regular Season will be released soon.<\/p>\n

RED DEER \u2013 <\/strong>The Red Deer Rebels are excited to announce that forward Paxson Madill has signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the team.<\/p>\n

Madill was selected by the Rebels with the 42nd<\/sup> pick in round two of the 2025 WHL U.S. Priority Draft.<\/p>\n

The native of Hermantown, Minnesota had an outstanding season with his hometown Hermantown Hawks in the United States High School-Minnesota (USHS-MN) league with 34 points in 27 games (11 goals, 23 assists). Prior to being drafted by the Rebels, Madill racked up 26 points in 17 games (12 goals, 14 assists) with the Minnesota Voyageurs 14U AAA.<\/p>\n

“We are very excited to get Paxson signed. His high hockey IQ and compete level are what we look for in a player,\u201d said Chase Fuchs, Rebels Director of U.S. Scouting. \u201cHe is a great kid from a great family who has earned this opportunity and everything he has achieved, and we are very excited for his future with us.”<\/p>\n

The Rebels and Pats have swapped first-round picks at the 2026 CHL Import Draft. The Rebels also received a third-round pick in the 2027 WHL Prospects Draft (via Everett) from the Pats.<\/p>\n

RED DEER \u2013 <\/strong>The Red Deer Rebels are excited to announce that goaltender Nathan Salisbury has signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the team.<\/p>\n

The Edmonton, AB native is coming off an outstanding season with the Bonnyville Pontiacs of the AJHL. In 34 appearances, Salisbury (’08) posted a 3.21 goals against average, .902 save percentage and a 17-14-1 record. Salisbury was named to the AJHL North Division All-Rookie Team.<\/p>\n

In 2024-25 with his hometown Edmonton Jr. Oilers Blue U18 AAA (AEHL), Salisbury was 14-4-5 with a 2.45 goals against average and .922 save percentage.<\/p>\n

RED DEER \u2013 <\/strong>The Red Deer Rebels today announced that Marc Habscheid has resigned as the club\u2019s head coach.<\/p>\n

Habscheid leaves after one season with the Rebels in which the club went 26-36-4-2 and returned to the WHL Playoffs. He earned his 600th<\/sup> career WHL coaching win February 3 in Prince George.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter living back in Canada this last year, I realize that my heart lays in Europe where I\u2019ve lived in my home for the past four years,\u201d explained Habscheid. \u201cI am thankful for the opportunity to coach the Rebels and wish nothing but success to Brent and the entire organization.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe would like to thank Marc for all of his hard work this past season and wish him the best with his future endeavours,\u201d says Rebels Owner, President and General Manager Brent Sutter.<\/p>\n

The search for the next head coach of the Red Deer Rebels begins immediately.<\/p>\n

The Rebels have acquired three draft picks \u2013 a fourth-round pick in the 2027 WHL Prospects Draft, a second-round pick in the 2028 WHL Prospects Draft (via Saskatoon), and a fourth-round pick in the 2030 WHL Prospects Draft \u2013 in exchange for defenceman Nate Yellowaga.<\/p>\n

Yellowaga (\u201908) recorded 27 points in 67 games with the Rebels in 2025-26 and added four points in five playoff games.<\/p>\n
